Restaurants in London are EXPENSIVE.
Most of the time they give you a hefty service charge so don't worry about tips. When they don't we all make sure to put in.

It amazes me that americans are so useless. If you can't live off $3 an hour, then do something the fuck about it. It's not a very difficult thing to do if the effort is put in.
Tips are a token of thanks, if you are a nice waiter, you'll get a tip, if you're a grumpy little twat you can forget about a tip and i'll peobably have a word with the manager about them
Do your job well and maybe you'll get a tip, there is no requirement to tip, and if you take the job expecting to get by via tips, then that is fucking immature, grow up!
Maybe if people stopped tipping every instance like a bunch of jackasses, there would soon be enough of a realisation and maybe there would be wage laws implemented like elsewhere around the world?
Personally i refuse all tips at work and request they are put in the charity collection box. I took my job knowing what i was being paid and accepted happily, i see no reason why i sohuld accept £1 because i made someone a potof tea, that's my job.

i'm confused on the claim that they make minumum wage. the federal minimum for a waiter is $2.13/hr, with $7.25 being the minimum with cash and tips combined. i think we all know that's bullshit because if a waiter accurately reports tips he gets raped in tax (hence why i pay with plastic and tip with cash). if you work in a slow diner you may as well just kill yourself because you'll never hit the $7.15. if the manager has to pay you the difference (because his own restaurant sucks so bad there's no traffic) there's nothing stopping him from firing you over it and calling it what he wants. the whole system is a joke. it's supposed to be set up to encourage waitstaff to work harder, but all it does is put their salary in the hands of people who have nothing to do with the payroll and who make observations based on meeting someone for an hour.

Tips are generally part of their wages - so all they get are wages, not wages and "free money".

Although from my experience both in management and as a server - tips are generally not closely kept track of and if you make less than minimum wage the boss really doesn't care.

Tipping is relative.. good service 20% or more... mediocre service 10% ..bad service nothing... and speaking to manager.

When I lived in Australia, I tipped a waitress (not knowing that they do not tip there). Needless to say, she gave me the weirdest look like I was an alien, then thanked me awkwardly. If that were me I would have been like sweet dumb tourist! Not be all awkward about it. lol

Once I was having lunch with a friend in a nice restaurant in Las Vegas and our waiter was awful. I mean exceptionally bad.
My friend called him over and said, 'You do know why you will not be receiving a tip, don't you?' Next thing I know a new waitperson and better service The new waitperson got a great tip, too. I must say I was embarrassed as all get out, but it worked.
I tip anywhere from 15% on up.
Oh, the absolute worse service I have ever received was in an upscale restaurant - Morton's in Chicago. It was a Thursday night, I had just closed my first big patent deal and was celebrating. Foolish waiter, the man in the expensive suit left him chump change, I was dressed in a nice dress and ready to blow out all the stops. Instead, we finished our meal and blew our money in Redhead's.

i agree with bigbuddahcheese. if they dont do a job to my satisfaction (which isnt that high) i wont tip. if i only get one drink during my damn dinner they dont get a tip... they cant even find the time to bring a refill WTF. they dont deserve to be taking a job somebody else is much more qualified for. now i understand on holidays or super busy days, you might not get your refill but if you watch the damn waiter/waitress fucking around with their friends.... fuck that he/she dont need a pay check obviously.

A driver charges accordingly-
A waiter works for tips- if you do not tip you are shorting them pay
Drivers charge a rate for there servise, and tip is above and beyond
A waiter provides a service for your tips, if you don't tip you are not paying for the service you recieved
Think of waitresses as strippers with self respect.

As someone from the UK, we certainly tip, but your whole gig just seems so bizzare. If you get the hours, waiting is not tip dependent, in that they get paid a perfectly fine livable wage, i only earn 12 pence over minimum wage myself, but they are paid this because the owner of the business works out what his outgoings are and uses appropriate markups. That is how all business works, you calculate what you need to sell at to pay your bills and make some profit. I would rather pay the real resteraunt price for a meal knowing that the staff were all getting perfectly acceptable wages than going for a nice meal and then being guilt tripped into giving someone my money. Just seems backwards to me.
