Privacy is it only for Old People

The founder of LinkedIn said that privacy tends to be an Old Person issue. Really? I don't think so. Here's some of the thoughts from Ladders.

When you signed up for LinkedIn, they never asked for your permission to sell your information to recruiters and HR departments, did they? They never told you that your actions, and your behaviors, and your privacy were going to be sold off to recruitment firms and HR departments. Even today, their User Agreement makes no mention of executive recruiters or human resources. (I mean, c'mon, if it was all on the up-and-up, they'd mention it to you when you sign up, or at least in the User Agreement or Privacy Policy, wouldn't they?)

Layoffs have increased 212% this year compared to last year because of the lousy economy, but you shouldn't be concerned about the fact that LinkedIn has the legal right to sell your job-hunting information to advertisers, show it in their advertisements, and leak it to your current colleagues or boss, if they want to.

No, you shouldn't worry about that, at all, says Reid Hoffman, billionaire founder of LinkedIn, because "all these concerns about privacy tend to be old people issues."

Here's what he said.

There is no privacy with smart phones, internet and all ip/gps tracked devices. Look at Facebook you can tell when someone is taking a shit or making a pot roast, privacy is there but you have to be thinking about it when you post/say or do things, otherwise you are just helping the them track you by putting "Just put a pot roast in the oven now going to check on my 92 MMJ plants!" on Facebook, really common sense more then anything.

Mostly common sense is what is missing from most people, not invasion of privacy the government is just capitalizing on peoples stupidity and laziness.

Big brother's been watching us for years. I won't join facebook because they'll share your info with anyone. I hate the fact that my new phone has lattitude, giving anyone who cares my exact location. Not as though I'm trying to hide, I just don't like the fact I can't. All this technology we crave so much is what's going to bring us down. I miss the good 'ol days before everything was ran by a network of severs that know everything about you.

It's not very hard not to tell the world everything about you. I live a lovely private life, i do not want folk knowing where i am so do not allow my phone to tag photo's with GPS data or do nto update my location and status on multplie social sites every 2 minutes of the day. With regard to companies handing out information, i request contracts and copies of agreements, if they look to sell or give any information to 3rd parties without my consent, such as British Gas selling payment info and such to councils to let them tackle benefit fraud, then i threaten them with legal action. There are area's where you can't afford to just keep your privacy, but on the whole it's really very easy. Just takes a couple seconds with the old brain engaged is all, something few take the time to do these days.

I agree with this. I stopped the social network thing way back in high school. Only use the internet for resources and a few forums. My only problem is I do have a smart phone, and while I don't gps tag anything, I'm still a walking gps that can be tracked at anytime..unless i chuck it into the river

I don't use social networks because I don't need to. And if I take a picture, I use a camera, and I never upload pictures of ANYTHING. I am a paranoid fuck.
