New 600W 4x4 grow(need advice on lights/ballast, please)

Secret Jardin Dr120 tent
Soler & Palau TD-200 with an 8" carbon filter.
6" Easycool reflector reduced to a cheap 4" inline on a dual timer with the lights.
Insulated hard-ducting

Firstly my budget...
...I'd like reliability.... If cheap means it'll die in 3 months, i'd rather go expensive. But if expensive doesn't mean any increase in reliability i'd obviously want to throw cheaper money at it.

Now my research:

Torn on high-end bulbs/ballast or digital greenhouse/htgsupply bulbs.

I heard you cannot tell a difference between the lights, I've seen a thread that boosted hortilux over sunmaster with pictures of higher yields with everything being the same. +1 -1 hortilux depending on whose credibility is higher.

I've heard ushio hilux gro lamps are better than hortilux, but it seems less complaints versus the latter over premature burnouts. But that could be because more people use hortilux over ushio.

Speaking of bulbs burning out, I hear hortilux's paired with lumateks burn out really quickly...Then I hear people who run both fine for a year(which is really all im hoping for out of my bulbs, more would be better of course)

Now onto the ballasts...Digi i hear ruin bulbs faster. Even from high end brands like lumatek and quantum. You'll never get a straight answer as each thread recommends different ballasts.

Not to say other brands suck, i'm just looking at these 4 in particular.

My budget isn't really an option as I can afford to go high-end. I just want longevity...I'm a do it right the first time kind of guy. I don't like to waste money on cheap products to have them die and replaced with something more money. At the same time I don't like to buy high-end if it has the same fail rate as cheaper money items.

Whatchu' all think?

havent got a digi ballest so carnt comment, but ive got a few magnetics and theyve never let me down! built like tanks, granted the digis look nice but imo arnt worth the extra spondoolics, (<<<said with a lisp) and i would go with a 600 for that tent. with cool shade.

is your magnetic noisy? that was my main concern. the extra weight doesn't bother me as it'll not be hung nor inside my tent.

8" scrubber for a 3x3 tent with 600 watts seems over kill.

I run a 6" scrubber in a 4x4.

I'm about to buy a new 600 watt, although I've found a complete air cooled kit for $205 shipped w/digi ballast, I'm a magnetic user..always have been. I'll probably pay more to stick with what I trust.

yes they are loud...but def. no more then my 6" inline fan.

the dr 120 are 4x4 so a 600 is perfect! and i agree that a 6 inch fan and filter would be enough, my magnetics arnt noisy! they rattle and buzz abit at start up but once warm there fine.

Yes as RobsterB mentioned the dr120 is a 4x4.

My fan is 419/538 CFM that i'll be varying for lights on/off which I thought was adequate and not overkill being 4x4x6.66=107cuft which is about 5 ACM on hi.

The 6" filter would be ideal, but the one I was looking at on HTG recommends 265-425 for optimal CFM range and my fan being a bit higher made me nervous. I'd happily slap a reducer on(not too worried about FPM going up and causing more noise) and go with a 6" since its half the 8" filters weight.

I'll have to look into magnetics. They looked more expensive than digital and shipping would definitely go up given the higher weight.

I would go digi. I love mine. I have a dr120 with a 600w in a radiant reflector. It doesnt do that good of a job lighting the whole tent. I would either get the biggest reflector you can or upgrade to a 1000w. I just upgraded to a 1000w, spent 300$ on the ballast and bulb, should have just got the 1000w right off the bat. I would get a dimmable ballast that way you can use the 1000w, but if it gets hot one day you can turn it down.

Look into digilux bulbs, they are made for digi ballasts and only 76$ shipped from ebay. I saw a review somewhere that they are on par with the hortilux. I also read that digi ballasts burn out the hortilux bulbs rather quick.

For the filter, you just need to make sure that your fans cfm dont exceed the filters cfm, if you do it wont scrub all the air going through it and will burn out the carbon filter quicker. I suggest you look into phresh filters, I have a 6''x24'' and it does the job. I heard the HTG filters are trash.

definitely get at least a 6'' inline. You could use it to cool the light and filter the air.

My opinion is if you are going to have more than one cycle, you should invest in some good equipment.

Well the 8in is already bought and so is the tent...I'm thinking of a 600w phantom..will a dimmable 1000w be compatible with 600w bulbs on 600w setting? My friend has a 4x4 setup with a 600w and it seems like enough light with a generic reflector. I'm looking at digilux to be honest...I haven't heard many things about them but none bad. Its now those or ushios...decided last night I didn't want to go hortilux with digi. Also how many plants do u got up for that 1k?

I have a dr90 and a sunhut xl(4x4)...the sunhut is a much better tent! The dr line is junk by comparison. The reflector is one of the most important pieces so spend wisely. I love my air cooled yieldmaster 2. Lights every corner with a 600 watt bulb and keeps temps down. Get the ballast you can afford and don't worry about noise. As mentioned above, your fan will be the loudest of all of them. I use a add-on speed controller to help with noise.

Really? Junk? I heard nothing but good things for the dr line. I will look at that reflector though. I will also be using a speed controller for lights on/off.

Yeah, I was very dissappointed with the dr after hearing all of the good reviews. I'm going to use it for mothers only. Out of the box it needed ducktape to cover leaking light. The Sunhut is much better IMO. Of course I've had mine for a while now and it is showing it's age. --I might buy one now in case they quit making them.

The yield master 2 is basically the same overall dimensions as the xtrasun i was looking at except cheaper. Thanks. Seems like a better buy.

*EDIT* nevermind...that guy wanted 54 dollars shipping thats why. lol. gorilla shipping

What I had in mind initially:

Digital Greenhouse 600 watt HPS Grow Light - 319.95
-w/ MH conversion, air cooled reflector, mech. dual-timer(htg brand lights, easycool reflector, digital greenhouse ballast)
GrowBright Pure Flow 8 Carbon Filter -134.95
6" Fan(same as other scenario) - $30
ph kit (same as other scenario) - $20
shipping -$80(thanks to the huge filter)=$585

or

Phresh Carbon Filter 6"x24" 550CFM -$180
600W Digilux MH -$84
600W Digilux HPS -$97
600W Phantom Dimmable Ballast -$179
6" Xtrasun air cooled reflector -$91
7-day digital 2 outlet timer -$20
ph kit (same as other scenario) -$20
6" Fan (same as other scenario) -$30
ALL SHIPPED =$701

+$116 more for high-end products....Seems worth it. I'm sure HTG would go lower on their price if I call them and explain this scenario. But is it even worth it? Maybe free shipping. is +$200 worth it? I can afford it.

You're going to have some fun bro. Not sure about this but you can check into it. -- I have a digital 600 watt ballast that does both MH/HPS. However it is impossible to find a straight 600 watt MH bulb. The 600 watt MH I use is a conversion bulb designed to run off a HPS ballast. Whatever you do, stay away from those bulbs that claim to do both. They run hot and the results suck IMO.

^This is the one im getting...Doesn't say anything about being a conversion. The phantom ballast does both HPS/MH...I think all the high-end ballasts do.(may be incorrect on this)

Went with ushios instead of digilux.

This being my first grow I will have a journal posted in a couple weeks complete with pictures.

Thank you everyone for your advice/input/support

Ushio is a damn good bulb. I used them through both of my first grows.

I went with Digi Ballast when I started my tent. They are more stable from an electrical standpoint. The mags cause disturbances to somethings. I have a Lumatek Dimmable. I have never used a mag but I was a naval electronic technician for 5 years and wouldn't use the mag. They are cheaper by far, but you get what you pay for IMO.

600w is perfect with a 4x4 setup. What type of medium are you going to be using? Link me your journal if that is a different topic than you want in this thread.

I was going to go with the digilux but I heard bad things...Someone sold me on some forum when they said they used like 70 of them over the years and only a couple broke.

Going to be a soil grow...Whole 8x8 room to myself.

How do you start a journal? Is it like any other thread?
