Well, they took it and placed it in a church for a while didn't they? Wasn't it blessed or w/e and people prayed in front of it and shit? If it wasn't a religious symbol when they first found it it sure as hell is one now.

Silverman added that the memorial must allow atheists and other belief groups to include their own displays of equal size. For the past several years the cross has been housed at St. Peter's church. On Saturday it was permanently moved to the 9/11 Memorial Museum after a ceremonial blessing at Zuccotti Park. The 9/11 Memorial Museum, which will officially open next year, said its mission is to tell the history of the attacks through artifacts like the cross.

if it was a crescent moon or some other islamic symbol instead, would you be okay with them putting it in the 9/11 museum? if not, why? dont american muslims have just as much of a right to do what the christians are doing in this situation? (using religious symbolism to aid in mourning 9/11)

the only reason the cross is there is because it represents a religious symbol to those people. otherwise it wouldve just been the highest pieces of steel in the pile, and unimportant to them

do you have any idea how many times i've been told that? i always find it rather comforting, knowing there's a place even for people like me after death. i have to admit i'd have a bit of a problem with the heat, but i've found you can get used to just about anything after a while and eternity is quite a while.

Put what ever religious relic you want. This isn't about our religious indifference, it's about the respect and memorial of those who died on 9/11. Atheists can fight battles else where, but putting a piece of rubble from the WTC that came out as a cross on display at a memorial is not harming any body. However, fighting it's display is harming the memory of those lives lost. I think atheists need to continue to take the higher road and stop fighting the trivial battles that will only serve to further tarnish our image.

Furthermore, if the Christians would do it, does that mean Atheists should? I suppose us atheists better start studying the bible some more and follow the footpaths of the religious then.

Atheists can fight battles else where, but putting a piece of rubble from the WTC that came out as a cross on display at a memorial is not harming any body. They're not saying the cross shouldn't be there, they are saying it's not right that it is the ONLY religious symbol being put up. This is using tax dollars and singling out a Xian symbol is dangerously close to respecting the establishment of a religion.

It's not a matter of disagreeing, it's a matter of being clear and establishing definitions that can be agreed upon for communication purposes. If the vast majority of self-identified atheists use the broader definition, why are you so insistent on telling them they are wrong?

To me that's what it is...What if real concrete proof was found, or "god" himself were to appear before them, you think that'd change their minds a little?

The best way to answer your question is....an atheist would say that would never ever happen....an agnostic would say well if that did happen...I'm agnostic ..I don't believe from the information that has been put before me ( bible and such), but my mind and heart is always open. I don't think my mind can be change by man though...
