thats still nasty, dont you have to top off w dirt as that shit turns to muck and falls in resevoir, eventually it would be chunks of perlite I'd think...plus doesnt shit like peat fuck w your ph level? or do you check ph and ec levels? I'd love to see those pics any day...IMO dirt in your resevoirs is a bad idea...why not just grow in a pot of soil, how beneficial is 5" of dirt and there is fertilizer in it also so do you add nutes or let them just fall into resevoir as the dirt is broke down and makes its way to your resevoir....how do you measure your ppms or tds with a bunch of friggin mud in water....make sure you post them pics bro.
If your buddy knows so much and been doing it for so much longer, then why come onto the boards to ask questions? As gump says stupid is as you stupid friend does lol.
you only add nutes to the water guy.and I dont worry bout ph and ppm an all that crap people been growing for centuries without it.my nutes has ph buffers in it.I was trying to get peoples opinions on what hydro system they liked the most.I didnt ask anyone to critisize what im doing but thats all seems to happen on this site.all you have to do is measure out the right amount of nutes and let it run.every 3rd time you fill your water level back up you add more nutes but not to much because there will still be some in your soup.I will post pics on here soon and i just germ'd some white widow seeds so ill be filling the 3 empty pots I have now with them.I might even replace the retarted couple thats super slow growing.I have a grow log on this setup and ill be posting weekly pics and updates.https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/446852-here-my-new-dwc-i.html

well i just gotta say for one you are in a hydro forum so people are going to criticize the shit out of anybody even mentioning soil and hydro together lol that should just be a given, now you really need to think back on why hydro was even started, to allow mass amounts of oxygen to the root zone of a plant something that is much much harder to achieve with a soil medium. now truth be told the mid and upper parts of the roots actually collect oxygen (this is the way many systems work i mean dirt outside is not always saturated but the deeper you dig the wetter it gets) so if the upper part of the root mass is not gathering oxygen IE stuck in saturated soil constantly, then why even go hydro at all?? although this might not kill the plant your production is going to be half of a actual hydro growers (as you are half assing it anyway) but if you are ok with that then let it ride bud.

ps
im with dude on the fact that you should be watching your ph and ppm/tds very closely as you stated "my nutes have ph buffers in them" well i hate to be the one to tell you but i doubt your soil does so it is going to mess with the ph also the TDS (total dissolved solids) is going to be insane as well because of the shit that is falling in the res. hopefully you dont have root problems.

so best wishes, good luck, and all that good nice stuff i wish you the best and happy smoking.

I did an initial ph test and was running right dead in the green.Im not tottally just not gonna keep an eye on it at all.mainly the soil is just to hold the plant up as it roots.the roots kick the soil out in a few weeks and with water changes it will stay pretty well clean.I dont have a ppm meter I basically just watch my plants an if they look happy I let them do their thing.I will use hydroton as I said 1 of these days to run a side by side comparison but is pretty hard since no 2 plants are alike until I get a mother to clone then i can run the test im curious myself lol.but ive seen my friends plants and yield and they were freakn INSANE compared to any ive seen but as i said hes a vet too so he knows what hes doing.if your taught 1 way then your gonna think that way I leave my mind open for suggestions and try to expand the ordinary and come up with something all my own.im also thinking of other mediums.life is all trial and error we just sit back and watch her spin while sitting on the porch smoking a nice fat joint :) ....write that down...lol jk
