Happy 420 to all my fellow LED users! F the Haters! Currently on day 20 of flowering for my LSD and Blue Mystic. Looking great buds are forming. Oh wait how can that be? LED's are only good for veg not flowering. Screw that! So I running the 270w Enhanced Spectrum Supernova LED from HidHut. It's a good light and I recommend it!
Here's a shot of the LSD day 19 of flower.
If you could pick up one of those supernovas for $570 used would you?? If not what should I offer the guy??

now how much power is that supernova pullin it says 270w but is it really eating 270
Don't know. At the time I bought it, that wasn't even anything I was worried about. I wanted an LED that was a stand alone light. One the will perform well from seed to harvest without having to add some cfl lighting. Seen the supernova in hightimes as best new LED tech for their 2010 STASH awards. Yeah I know everyone is hung up on actual draw and 3w diodes and is it Cree and all that. I didn't know anything bout that stuff when buying my light. Was really naive and just jumped right in selling my drums to help me pay for this bad boy. Call me stupid I don't care but I did get a good light that performs excellent IMO! Once I can get into a grow room then I'll probably buy more LED lights. I'm sold on em. I'm a rookie grower who's never used an hid light.

As for the used Supernova, how old is it? Is it the enhanced spectrum model? $570 sounds pretty good depending on those two questions. Like I said before I'm happy with the Supernova! It has done what I hoped it would do. I haven't seen too Many people with these lights. They are expensive new. $1200 kis what mine cost. Pretty sure you can find a good light for less! Seems those spectra lights are good ones and the 357 magnum. I'm seeing some nice led lights getting cheaper.

So after posting I remembered I did send an email to hidhut Inquiring about the tech specs of the supernova. My bad! Here is what I sent:
Hi I'm interested in your 270 ES Spectrum Supernova. I've read all the info on your site and still have a few questions. First what is the actual watt draw of the light? What kind of LED lights are they? Are they Cree, bridgelux or something else? What is the lens angle? Basically I'm just trying to find the tech specs. I'm really interested in the supernova since I seen it in high times. Thanks for the info. How do u think it compares to lights like the 357 magnum or the penetrator lights or even the blackstar.

When I sent the email I already had the light. It was actually a couple months ago when I sent it.
Here is their reply:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in our Supernova, it is our most popular LED array at this time.

The actual power draw is 273 watts at full power. *They use Edison LED bulbs, and have 110 degree angle. *In our opinion, our light is better than most on the market. *It is a full spectrum for flowering (the ES one at least), is adjustable in case you're vegging with it or growing in a smaller area, and it has a 3 year warranty. *We can repair the lights indefinitely and since they are not a stamped on circuit board individual bulb changes are still possible.

Thanks, let us know if you have any more questions,

Hello good people/

I am a fellow ledeer. Over 4500w

I'm using 2 year old htg 90w ufo's and the newer 2w ufo's.

I need more. they are out of stock. i see better prices on ebay.

I'm looking at the blackstar 240w.

Can anyoneone confirm they use 3w leds and are actually 240w? thank you.

A little to pricey for me. I'm tight. ;)

I'm confused also. On the 220 it says 100 3w leds but only draws 200w? Doesn't make sense.

Stepping my game up to GLH lights. Havent seen anything come close to them yet! The blackstars are a good second, but man oh man the GLH lights are doing great! Just gotta get rid of my leftover LEDs and i can start putting up more photos in here :D

Many of the previous posts have gone over this. LED lights rarely use their full potential as doing so reduces the lifespan of the light. Typical actual draw is 1/2 - 2/3s of the LED potential in watts.

I apologize for not reading back further. 332 pages is daunting.

So can you tell me if the 90w ufos from htg I use are pulling the full 90w?

thanks

the ufo I had wasn't pulling close to 90 watts and i still nailed 86g from one plant i think the light was pulling about 45-60w the new 135w I got is pulling 68w and is easily 3x brighter than the old ufo but no plants under it yet :(

Interesting.

i need something quality and cheap at the same time like YESTERDAY ;)

Looks like I am going with the blackstar 240w. Hope I'm not making a bad choice......

looks like they're still trying to sell bullshit

http://www.gothamhydroponics.com/grow-lights/gotham-hydro-led-grow-lights/blackstar-240w-led-grow-light-3w-cree.html

right at the bottom they claim 250w

'So in usable lumens'

there's bullshit claim as soon as led sellers talk lumens im out that should be a warning to you

'Coverage is limited by the physical size of the unit. Our suggested coverage for this light is about 4 sq. ft. Any 90w or 180w LED light claiming to cover more area means the seller does not know what they are talking about.'

he dont know what hes talking about photon flux density and viewing angle is what determines effective coverage area not panel size come on anyone that knows how to read and use google could told this guy this

the pure amount of trash talking on the site alone tells me to stay away

also cree doesnt make 660nm red so if 660nm is in there theres more than cree chips have fun being sold by name brand usage

can you recommend something in the $1.00 - $1.25 per watt range? 90watters would be awesome.
thats too cheap good panels run 2.50-4.00 per watt you could get an egl-165 for 375 that draws about 90w and super bright i'm loving the egl-135 i have though aint nothing growin under it yet also ive been able to call the guy behind the EGL stuff almost any time at nite to ask about plant stuff and learn

huh did the math the egl-165 is the best deal from ecogroled at 2.27 per watt the 135 is 2.29 per watt and the 300 is 2.83 per watt of equipment

i worry about cheap panels because not all diodes are the same like computer processors crappy ones get low cheap binning good ones get expensive binning you get cheap diodes you can almost bet on failures

also any led light foil covered on the front is likely garbage its hiding a plastic pcb then a heat plate good led panels use a solid metal thermal pcb for mounting diodes and for reliability

huh i wonder if i should take apart my 135 and take pics

There's a good amount of people very happy with that unit. I use one a supplemental and I love it, for a bunch of people that soley use blackstar please reference the latter half of the following thread, there's links to several other successful blackstar grows as well....

https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/414669-kush-groove-black-star-19.html#post5607160

Yes, they advertise the diode ratings and not the actual draw (as do many other suppliers, especially on ebay), they actually are pretty close on their coverage estimates, and I haven't heard many people buck that, as opposed to a lot of other suppliers. They use a mix of lens degrees, depending on the spectrum of the diode. The foot print is pretty dependant on both the shape and size of the unit as well as the lens angles.

They are unbeatable for the money. The 240W unit draws about 133W, at 279, beat that price from anyone using actual draw numbers.

If you are looking for quality per $ this is your unit. It's no Lexus, but luckily you don't need a Lexus. If you are just growing a couple of plants discreetly, and looking to limit heat, and limit electrical expense, this is a great unit to do so.

The only other model I would consider is the ISIS 170W (120W draw) for $379.

Now I'll have to endure all the criticism from blackstar haters. Enjoy!!

Interesting.
