Lighthouse Blackstar 240w LED.... Any good?

I actually originally stopped on this thread because I watched an awesome grow with a Lumiglow ES but his was 1200 bucks so I was trying to find a cheaper alternative. What I instead found was some of the most sensitive folks this side of the internet... maybe cheap LED's emit Estrogen into the air?

Alright, here's the skinny on Gotham Hydroponics. I stopped by there physically yesterday and spoke with Victor. Victor is a frighteningly well built Ukrainian/Russian (I know they are very different, but I didn't ask) gentlemen, who happens to be very nice. I requested to see all the models in their running state, which he had no qualms with doing for me. I can attest that these are indeed Cree LEDs, American made, they are assembled in China. As far as I can tell, all LED models on the market are assembled in china. Even the ISIS models. He has a massive quantity of everything on hand. At least 50 of each light. Some up to 100. These lights are bright as all hell, hurts the shit out of my eyes, and he recommends not looking at them due to the UV spectrum, he's not sure if it is bad for your eyes, but his reasoning is that UV can't help your eyes. If you need multiple lights, give him a call, he may work something out for you. I ended up purchasing a 500W blackstar, which I am currently running in a competition with a 1000W MH during veg, and a 1000W HPS in flower (we'll see the results in 3 months, plants have just been transplanted from seedling). He is a real guy, with employees, his products are real and work great thus far, and I would recommend purchasing from him, as comparable lights from other suppliers are EXTREMELY more expensive. If you don't like his marketing practices then fine, but I sure like my LED grow light. And for the record, most businesses keep your credit card information for warranty, taxation, and accounting purposes. Thats all I have, I asked him every question that was brought up on this thread that I could remember. He is very serious about not exaggerating his claims, he knows that the main draw back from LED isn't the output (especially with 3w), but it is the foot print. He stated that the foot print from my model is 3x4 at one foot from the canopy. I know I can get at very least a good 4x4 area WELL lit up by this thing.
 
KK and Fictionalgrower both have valid points. I wish not to convert or sway opinions on the Black Star panel. With information as stated both sides are correct as I can truly as others with electrical backgrounds speak with a true understanding of the circuitry involved. Not swayed on 25 plus years as an electrical engineer I have seen no disclaims in the Black Star. Startup amp draw is always higher with stabilized draw dropping as the unit becomes thermally stable. Remember the cooler the unit is maintained the more power up to an individual chipset’s MA draw can be. Now we only must wait for Fiber optic power distribution system panels and things may change again.

Thanks for that. Victor sounds ok by me. But I can tell you, this is the first time in years I've not had the option to decline having my credit card info stored.

I don't like it a bit.

edit: Something else for the record, Procyon and (I've heard) Haight Solid State LED lights are assembled in America. I would bet there are others.
 
Im more than satisfied with this light at least when it comes to veg i just kicked over a few days ago, no more pictures due to the fact that im no longer at my own house with it and out of courtesy for the other person i work with no pictures. I can tell you though that within 4-5 days of going in the clones were very happy. I believe they were kept too humid in the dome and the large drop in humidity shocked them for the first four or five days. After that they began to shoot lots of new growth and lots of laterals. Two weeks in veg clones started around 3 inches off the top of they hydroton and how they are pushing twelve. Can't wait for the stretch on flower =). I will probably pick up a 500 for flower next go around unless i still need one more 240 which i may... I want to move over to a single Gh waterfarm and do a scrog with a 500w and keep the 240w for a veg in another gh waterfarm right on the other side of the tent. I like that better than the one large bed.

This light is handling, i have never seen a plant grow this fast before EVER. Unless it was outside and even then not this fast because that was in soil and there is way more air to the roots in this hydroton bed.

Those Kessil lights look really nice i just didnt want to spend that little bit extra right now the lighthouse is more of the middle i would say price wise out of all the lights out there you can go cheaper but at that point they just end up being hit or miss.
 
Nice update, KaptK- Too bad no pics, though. From what I've heard, I think you are going to be surprised at how well this does flowering.

How did your marine fan work out btw?

The Kessil is good for tighter spaces, plus it's very quiet. I'm supplementing with a small induction bulb I found yesterday. Those induction bulbs are amazing. I bought a bigger one awhile back and my houseplants are crazy about it.

shit man the marine fan is kickin ass only problem i had was finding the right power supply and the one i used on it at first was great until it melted not enough amperage on the plug my own fault for not checking that part of it, but while it ran it ran good quiet pumped a lot of air for a little four inch i think it might even run better when i get this new power supply tomorrow its still 12v but its rated at 6 amps so the fan will be able to use the full 12v for sure instead of the puny plug lol. All in all if you dont count my mistake of accidentally buying a comp charger for it LOL my own dumb stoned ass again pulled the trigger before i used my brain, i spent 26+whatever they charge u for shipping on the fan, and 20 on the power supply for it now that i found the right kind. 46 bucks is not bad for 230cfm better than ebay or the hydro store for a fan that is wired AC already
 
my grows doin bitchin right now and jesus supplementing a thousand fuck overkill and a half lol got a freakin forest goin in that bitch
 
I ordred a blackstar 240w flowering model you think it will do good with veg too ? also whats the perfect distance from the canopy on these units ... i got some small 5 -6 inch clones bout 10 of them just want to know the perfect distance for optimum growth..
 
10-14in I believe. But these put off almost zero heat so you could put it right to the tips.
 
I have mine about 10in from the top. No sign of bleaching but Ill have to keep an eye on um.

So if 10-14 is too close, what would be ideal?

You're probably ok. I let my Kessil get inside a foot and it bleached. The lightstream is more concentrated, but I wouldn't let yours get inside 6" or so.
 
I've done a lot of research on LED grow lights & this thread is the most convincing thing I have come across! Thanks for the post, looks like I'm switching to LED. What is the ebay user name or store?
