Any Ideas on How to Get into the Industry?

Hey all,

I am in AZ and would be interested in getting into the MMJ industry. Do you have any tips or experience from other states that went medical?

get good at growing and get some patients to sign you as their caregiver. i think with the small amount of mmj business there, growing on your own for your own patients may be the easiest way to make a profit.

Don't really know your laws, but use colorado as an example, get in now while the gettin is good. We are now limited to 5 patients each here with only 6 plants (3 flowering) for each. Unless you already opened a dispensary, then you can have as many as you can possibly get. So what i would do is (assuming you know how to grow) round up as many patients to have you as their caregiver as possible (100s to 1000s if possible), and drop every single dime you can afford into this. Attempt to open one of the first dispensaries in the state, make it the best it can be, will take a while to repay itself, but in the end will be worth it. Do know though that with where you are im sure The Health Center and the Farmacy will be working hard to bring their cali dispensaries there like they did here. I would assume you have at least a year but more like 3 before any major changes in the law, and i would do everything to be as established as possible when that time comes (colorado dispensaries had over 1400 pages in the new application). Also contract growers will be very important to a successful set up (large scale).
Otherwise just get your buddies to sign you as caregiver and do it out of your basement "legally" to the same guys you already know. Just the two options i would look at, also the hydro store has made a huge jump here in colorado too, then you dont have to worry about the feds.

So. I have a question...

If patients aren't allowed to grow if they live within 25 mi of a dispensary... then how does that factor in with a caregiver?

Say a patient is 20 miles from a dispensary, does that mean a care giver cant grow for them because they aren't allowed to grow within 25mi of a dispensary??

Patients should be allowed to grow, that legislation is ridiculous.. "Okay we agree with you, it's JUST a plant that you DON'T need to refine to use... but you still cant grow it.. growing is bad and should only be done in locked facilities to keep it away from people it would harm. Oh, but by the way, growing ISN'T bad if you live 25 miles away from a dispensary!"

growing in a locked facility is not to stop it from harming people.

its to stop the CRIME associated with THEFT.

THEFT of EVERYTHING is an enormous problem in arizona. thank you illegals.

az wont be like cali. the caregiver thing is not going to fly.

the business model MUST be NPO {non profit}

there are NO rules in place yet. so what you should be doing is lobbying and fighting tooth and nail AGAINST the 25 mi radius rule.

though im sure come hell or high water the 25mi radius wont be changed.

there is strong opposition to prop 203 in az.

so pretty much unless you live out in the sticks, you have about 4 months to master growing weed, get a business education, write a business plan, and then roll it all together.

but honestly the first decision is this.

do you want to GROW weed or do you want to SELL weed?

the dispensary and the cultivators will more than likely operate under the same license, but in different locations.

this means partnerships will have to be formed, like it or not.

The laws currently are really against the patients and caregivers.

If you are a patient within 25 miles of a dispensary you cannot grow your own stuff, instead you are forced to buy it at the dispensary for whatever they want to charge.

Hopefully the law changes quickly.

Brother, I wan't to be able to grow weed and supply it to people who NEED it, or could USE it. Prices wouldn't be high, just enough to pay for nutes/water/other costs... I don't want patients to be forced to buy something at ridiculous cost just because they can't grow it..

& they don't make me lock up an expensive sports car, I can park a $120,000 sports car on the street no problem... but if my $500 grow room, with $1400 worth of plants doesn't have a specific amount of locks then I'm in the wrong... laws to protect the citizen from theft? Yeah right. YOUR PROPERTY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. I think that should go for everything including grow rooms and cannabis.

Yes hopefully it does. But I don't think it will gain attention until a year or so after the bill is effect... Who knows though.

I read something about 70% OF A DISPENSARIES pot must be grown on site.... That would be Retarded... But the final draft of what will be law has not been written....

When this law comes into effect there will not be any dispensaries around I would say for at least a few weeks to a month... I would think that since there would be not dispensaries anywhere in the state people will be able to grow a few harvests....

The draft rules (R9-17-306, inspections, section (C)(1) says:

A dispensary:
1. Shall cultivate at least 70% of the medical marijuana the dispensary provides to
qualifying patients or designated caregivers;
2. Shall only provide medical marijuana cultivated or acquired by the dispensary to another dispensary in Arizona, a qualifying patient, or a designated caregiver authorized by A.R.S. Title 36, Chapter 28.1 and this Chapter to acquire medical marijuana;
3. May only acquire medical marijuana from another dispensary in Arizona, a qualifying
patient, or a designated caregiver;
4. May acquire up to 30% of the medical marijuana the dispensary provides to qualifying
patients and designated caregivers from another dispensary in Arizona, a qualifying
patient, or a designated caregiver; and
5. Shall not provide more than 30% of the medical marijuana cultivated by the dispensary to other dispensaries.

So, yeah. A dispensary will have to provide at least 70% of its own product, and purchase anything else from other dispensaries, or patients or caregivers that have jumped through the hoops so they can grow their own stuff.

What I want to know is what happens to patients and caregivers who open up shop, only to have a dispensary open up within 25 miles of their location. Do they have to shut down?

That's also my concern. We're not growing outdoors.. At least not in Phoenix/tuscon.

I think that it will take a year for some dispensaries to get established across the board. The people that grow within that timeframe would have to shut down I guess once the dispensaries started opening up (within 25 miles)

But good question. Very good question.

LOTS of grey area with this legislation..

IF they say, "if you are growing before the disp. opens your allowed to grow" then people will need to get the fuck on that... but again, it could just tell us to shut down established grows to BUY from dispensaries :(

Also, while i'm typing... what do you think medical cannabis will cost in AZ? If it's truly non-profit, then the weed would be like a few dollars to the gram IF EVEN... it's my experience that medical costs as much if not slightly MORE than street value to discourage people buying weed through LEGIT routes, then re routing it to the black market..

Exquisite BS, part 2:

R9-17-314. Product Labeling and Analysis
A. A dispensary shall ensure that medical marijuana provided by the dispensary to a qualifying
patient or a designated caregiver is labeled with:
1. The dispensary's registry identification number;
2. The amount and strain of medical marijuana;
3. If not cultivated by the dispensary, whether the medical marijuana was obtained from a
qualifying patient, a designated caregiver, or another dispensary;
4. The date of manufacture, harvest, or sale;
5. A list of all chemical additives, including nonorganic pesticides, herbicides, and
fertilizers, used in the cultivation and production of the medical marijuana;
and
6. The registry identification number of the qualifying patient.

Get that #5, bolded above. So, if you root the cutting with rooting hormone, you'll need to list it on the finished product. If you add pH up or down to a hydroponics grow, you'll need to add that "chemical additive" as well. Every single bottled fertilizer product that gets added to the soil, the clay pellets, whatever- you'll need to list that, too. The grower will need to record every single item that is added to the plant, from cradle to grave.

What a fantastic crock this is going to be.

Grocery stores don't even label produce as, "Genetically Modified" when it IS GM.

Why do we have to list EVERY non organic additive... to protect us from pesticides sprayed on buds?

You wouldn't have to worry about what other people are putting into their shit if you could just grow your own fuckin' medicine.

It's important to the state and patients that dispensaries be non-profit. They are trying to keep prices low for patients, and keep black-market profiteers out of the business. I don't know about you, but I need a couple ounces a month for pain. I can't afford it at California prices, and I think they know that other legitimate patients can't either.
