does wbs work better then rye grain? ive done bulk substrates, but i dont get flushes like yours tho. i have some coco coir ones going now, their almost ready to be birthed. after dunking is verm the best to roll them in then mist?

Oh hell yes, rye grain works the best IMO. WBS is just cheaper and I'm so used to it by now though.

But use rye grain if you can, good call.

For PF Tek cakes, once they're birthed, dunking them in water and rolling them in a bowl of vermiculite is a very wise thing to do

In that case, you could probably make that work. Not sure what you feed the chickens, but depending on their diet, you could be sitting on shit goldmine...hahaha.

I agree with someone else 100% on this one. I'm by no means a myco expert, but I'd give PF Tek a shot first. I just started fruiting my first batch and just knocked up my second round and have to say, while it does take a little time, it isn't all that difficult. I've been looking into bulk methods myself and decided to stay with pf tek for a little while mainly because of its simplicity. Plus you don't need a pressure cooker for pf tek. Once I get my technique down I might try my hand at some bulk, but for now pf tek is the way to go. Reading and doing research is essential, but it can only take you so far. Nothing beats actual experience IMO.

Quick tip if you decide to go the pf tek route and can't find brown rice flour or just want to save some moeny. Just buy plain old brown rice and grind it yourself if you have a blender. a 1 lb bag (like 75 cents) will easily get you 10-12 jars with a little left over. My food process didn't work so well, but my cheap blender ground it up quite nicely. Think I did a 1 lb bag in 3 batches and it's about as fine as anything you'd buy pre-ground.

Speaking of bulk, what do you think about using coco coir instead of horse manure? I wouldn't think coir would have much nutrients, but I've seen a few articles/grows online that people spawn WBS straight to coir with pretty good results. Wouldn't it have to be amended with worm castings or something like that? Maybe I'm looking at it from a cannabis perspective, but coco coir is pretty inert, almost like peat moss. Is the mycelium able to break down the coir and use it? Or am I mistaken and coir is only used as a casing?

im deff going with the PF tek to learn this art. i was also planning on grinding up my own rice flour.

Yeah, you can use coco coir in substution of manure (maybe this is what you were talking about redrum), but re-colonization times are gonna go WAY up.

One of the more important things to know is that your bulk moisture levels are key. Too moist, and you risk contams. Too dry, and the spawn (that's already dried out from sitting in the jars for a month +) will continue to be dry, and colonization times will be affected.

Finding that happy-medium with just just a plain coco coir sub would take some experimentation. But it should work fine. It's coconut fibers, and that's a bio-nutrient.

EDIT:

ALSO, grinding brown rice kernels into brown rice flour is great! Mycelium loves fresh food sources, and freshly ground brown rice is perfect.

so im thinkin, in the spring summer, i wanna give outdoor cultivation a shot with the chicken manure!! mother earth's the best terrarium i can find at a reasonable price

With your chicken manure sub, you might need to cut in some gardening lime to reduce the acidity.

I add gardening lime to my bulk sub mix, but with chicken shit being more acidic, I'd add a little more than I will recommend.

i use rye grain. i buy it for $18.75 with tax for a 56lbs bag of it. the coco coir i pasteurize in a cooler over night. then ring out as much water as i can by hand, then mix with my colinized grain.

But wait a minute, did you say you pasteurized the coco coir in the cooler overnight?

Pasteurization happens at over 160 degrees F.

Putting anything in the frig is gonna bring it to near freezing, but not nearly enough to kill harmful bacteria.

he probably has his cooler rigged as a temp controlled box...I use a cooler as a spare IC with a gallon milk jug of hot water...twice a day keeps it perfect...

there is some confusion here: he used the word 'pasteurization'.

What he was doing was far from pasteurization.

So it's important to note, most especially for the newer growers trying to make sense of this thread.

If you attempt to spawn to unpasteurized bulk substrates like he was doing with coco coir, don't be surprised to find a lot of contams in the end.

With mushrooms, grow conditions are fluid; meaning they can change day-to-day, week-to-week, sometimes dramatically fast, such as an unchecked drop in humidity, or a lack of regular, fresh air.

Because of this naturally extreme variability (most especially since I haven't worked with this strain for over a year), I won't be able to gauge when I'll have fruit in my grow chamber.

Just sit back and check this thread out in about a week. That's when I plan on spawning the jars to a pasteurized horse manure bulk substrate.
