Question about lights.

Hey, why do you need all these like special lights for growing? Is it because of the heat that comes off of it? Couldn't you use use a normal high watt bulb? Thanks if you can answer this :)

its not a matter of Watts really, its a matter of WHAT kind and how STRONG lighting ya bulb puts out. heard me?

Yeah I think lol. I had a little browse around google at CFL bulbs.. and it kept popping up about energy saving bulbs. It then came to me, I've got 4 energy saving bulbs next to me lol. But I take it they ain't on about them normal evergy saving bulbs though? This is what it says on the box of the bulbs I got:
GENIE
WW 827
230-240V
B22 BC 10000h
600 lumen

I take it they wouldn't be any good mate?

Is it true that florescent lights have different specturms? I thought all florescent lights were full spectrum. If there is a difference, which ones
are the best for budding? I saw a 300W 64W actual cfl for $15 but if it won't help budding I don't want to waste my $.

thats nowhere near enough to get you through a whole grow.google cfl grow lights or just grow lights instead.florescent lights are only good for seedlings.

There is a whole sub-forum about growing with CFLs - all your answers and more will be there.

I'll have a look in there in a minute bud :) I was having a gander on google about lumens. I'm starting to get the drift about lumens now lol. I found this little bit of info - Seedlings and Clones = 300 lumens
Veg growth = 2500 lumens
Flowering = 10,000 lumens

So would a normal energy saving bulb that produces around 300 lumens be okay for one seedling?

Munchies, Puck:

Lights produce different colours of light. Frequencies, specifically. Your typical vegetative light (blue/white light) is in the 5000-10 000 Kelvin range of colour. Your standard flowering light is about 3000 Kelvin or lower.

You can use the lights interchangably BUT the efficiency of the light in relation to your plants will be compromised.

Blue = veg
Red/Orange = flower/bloom

If you are buying CFL lights, you are looking for "Daylight" or 6500K (ish) bulbs to grow your plants. Then Soft White, or about 2500K bulbs to flower with.

MH does, several are available. HPS is perty much the same unless it has secondary MH tube built in.

hey sorry to jump on your thead but i am about to grow some seeds and and going to do them by florecent light, last grow i did by natural light until i could stick into my grow room where i have 2 600w lights. will any florecent be ok or not???? also does it have to be really close to the plant as it grows??? i tried to clone my last plants but kind of failed so need to start from seed again now.

if you want maximum growth/watt you want 6500 K (Daylight) bulbs/tubes. The closer the better, as long as you don't overheat them.

Ok that helps. Well its only to get them started till i can put them in my grow room. Thanks for that

Thanks man, I am starting to get it. Went to the store to check it out, got som Barney's LSD on the way and
want to maximise potency/yield.

I use the following

Clones 180,000 lumens

Vegetating 180,000 lumens

Flowering 230,000 lumens

For a single plant I normally use 95,000 lumens to flower with. The more light the more product.

If you are looking to Maximise yield, you won't be able to do it with Fluorescent. High Pressure Sodium for best results.
