Or 55 gallon plastic (black) drum to collect rainwater.

I wouldn't drink or bathe in city water with fluoride,chlorine in it for anything!

Yeah, I don't buy into that fearmongering either. The thing is that treated sewage eventually ends up in groundwater and reservoirs. At some point in the future it could become a problem. As for the fluoride thing..........there are no links to it causing health issues. Quite the contrary. We have fewer people losing all their teeth and needing dentures.

No offense taken. I have studied the fluoride thing and there just aren't too many reliable studies yet. Sodium Fluoride is poisonous but not in the amounts used in tap water. Now what isn't really known is the long term effects. We'll have to wait several generations before we'll know for sure what effect the miniscule amounts used in municpal water will have on humans. To be safe, I don't consume unfiltered tap water either though.

I am neutral on the subject. This is a very hottly debated topic in which both sides of the issue put forth compelling arguments. There are newer studies showing that fluoridation is helpful in preventing tooth decay. Many things that are considered poison are actually beneficial in smaller amounts.

The R/O filter will remove almost all of the salt and the water will be fine to use for your plants. I have read that R/O filter membranes don't last as long when used on softened water. Just something to be aware of.

Amazing when people ask a question they really need an answer to and when they find out the solution isn't in thier little bag of tricks then the answer is wrong. There isn't a serious grower anywhere in the world that would use softened water. I am sure some strains are more tolerant of PH issues as well as salt, but for the cost of getting RO or distilled water with correct PH or at least low TDS it would seem o a no brainer. Most distilled store bought water has the PH adjusted up into the 8. something.
Maybe there should be a folder that says "Yes Man", if you want to ask a question that yields a result you don't like, one could always go to the Yes Man folder.

That's right. The ppm's will start to rise which indicates you need a new membrane. Happy growing.
