Soft water.

When you say soft out of the tap,,,is it municipal water?
City water?

Do you have a water softener that utilizes cation exchange and a brine tank?
That is what 99% refer to as soft water..
If that is the case then you can't do shit to make it safe for plant use.
It will be altered at the molecular level and cannot be made right.
Sodium ions are added and are bad news for plants...

An alternative that actually works is replace the salt in the brine tank with potassium chloride if your
resin will allow it,check with manufacturer..

But this is a dumb move as water softeners strip magnesium and calcium from the water,,you know
the same elements that you are paying a criminal price for in a bottle of calmag?

Plants needs these building blocks to thrive..

Skip soft water altogether..

If running hydro use a nice portion of well water if you have one.

Good answer man. I agree. water softners are no good. I used to have one and was watering only house plants and man it dried em up into dust it seems like. but I wouldnt try to take the chance of supplementing it and it still kill my crop. good luck and happy growing. your best bet is to get some distilled water since its fairly cheap and use it.

Water softeners are bad whether they use Sodium Chloride or Potassium Chloride. Too much potassium will lock out other nutrients and too much sodium, well, too much of that will just kill your plants! Distilled water is great but r/o water out of the grocery store machines is much cheaper and almost as pure as distilled. ;-)

There are no absolutes when discussing growing our favorite plant.:weed: There are too many variables so it's best to experiment and figure out FOR YOURSELF what works best. Happy growing indeed.:bigjoint:

Click on the link in my sig. My water thread should be able to help you out. You should never use softened water! If your water is pretty saline I'm guessing that's the case. You can use distilled water or even better, you can buy water from the grocery store machines. That water is reverse osmosis filtered and is near as pure as distilled at a fraction of the cost.;-)

If you're going to be using a nice share of water for your plants I'd recommend a Reverse Osmosis unit...
Or 55 gallon plastic (black) drum to collect rainwater.

I wouldn't drink or bathe in city water with fluoride, chlorine in it for anything!

Do you have any idea how many cancerous agents are in that stuff due to medications that this
sickened ,drugged society pisses down the drain? this refuse is bleached and returned to you to drink

Guess you don't need me to tell you that the meds are all still in the water?

You cannot remove them...

City water is death to any living organism....

Thousands for an RO filter ?????? what in the hell are you talking about?
You can buy a real nice unit on ebay for under 200 bucks.
I have purchased units with extra membranes at that price and have
produced thousands of gallons for years....pure and the ph is naturally
set to 6.0.....

Looks like you aren't doing any research from our input....

I'm done here ,,,,waste of time....

Let me put it this way, i dont own the house im livin in so i cant just install an ro system for shits n giggles.

p.s. city water is perfectly safe to consume especially cities like nyc. Spare me your tin foil theories.

Anyone who has had similar problems please chime in.

I've seen r/o filters on ebay for as little as $79. I can buy them all day for $99. They aren't difficult to install (you won't have to cut holes in walls or anything). I'm not sure where you live but if you are in the U.S. practically every grocery store has those water machines that are self serve. You bring your own jugs (You can get 5 gallon jugs for about $7 at wal-mart) and the water is reverse osmosis filtered. The pricer per gallon averages around 30 cents per gallon. Extremely cheap. If you are on a water softener then YOU SHOULD NOT USE IT!!!! The type of salt used in them will kill your plants! No amount of supplementation with cal/mag is gonna fix that. You do what you want though. They aren't my plants. :-|
