Need Help on Grow Room Design Please +rep

Hey guys,
I am currently livin in a 3 bedroom townhouse, i have the master, my roomate has the second largest bedroom and the third bedroom is a workout room, i would have originally made the spare bdrm a grow room but fact that it backs on to a main highway is restricting me to do it. But we do have a storage room that is about 9ftx5ftx8ft (lxwxh). I have a picture to show you guys.
Just wondering if anyone can start me off, like what i should buy, i have a 400w mh light for vegitation, and im only planning on growing like 5 plants. The downside is that i have no windows for ventilation, so the only thing i can think of is to keep all the bedroom doors shut so the mh light doesnt go out the windows of the bedrooms.
is there another way around this?
any pointers or tips would be greatly appreciated.

you pretty much have to have some sort of ventilation. Until that is corrected you can't grow in a enclosed space.

You can grow in there fine. What's the hold up? Get some seed started now. You can do the whole grow using the 400 MH if you want.
Lets get started. Do you have seeds or a cutting available?

what are the temps in the store room? put your light in there with a min/max thermometer and close the door. at least youll know what temps you're dealing with.

go buy an extra door at home depot and cut an intake and exhaust into it. You can even put a door louver to make it look legit.

i am waiting on the seeds from nirvana as we speak,
i am going out tonight to buy supplies, what should i buy right away, i have a light timer, some soil/nutrients,
the hydroponics store is closed right now, so is there anything i can get at a store that has regular hours lol?

Get some good potting soil and some 4" planting containers to get things started. Do not get soil with time release ferts.
You'll also need some cheap lights to start them off with. CFLs or Floro tubes DayLight 6500K.

I like to go with at least 5 gallon pots. An osculating fan would be good too. Hi/Low Temp and humidity meter

You can take a look at my journal, this entire op was in a space that was 3.5' x 12' x 8', I used a lot of space savers in that op.

Thanks for the rep, you are right about starting in dirt too, much easier to begin with.

The mothers that started my first hydro grow were all started in soil and grew till they could be cloned. By that time the I had the table built, tested and ready to go.

May be even easier as cazdar said to go all the way through with soil so that you have a taste for what things should look like.

Instead of the nute tank and table just build a light proof flowering chamber and hang your light (MH is ok to start) in the space and set the pots on the floor.


Keep the temp down and the fresh air coming by having a fan inside the closet, and set the light schedule if you can to allow you to have the door open during lights on.


I have had really good luck making a "flowering chamber" as I call it, inside the grow area and seal it against light and add some ventilation, then the balance of the operation (mothers, seedlings, etc.) can take place in the rest of the op without being affected by the flowering schedule.

This is just like the new fangled tents that are widely available, only I am a big fan of foil backed foam board as thick as you can afford for the covering instead of foil lined cloth or poly. This material is easy to cut and fasten, with adhesive, nails or even duct tape, is lightproof and actually helps dampen sound to some degree. The 4 x 8 foot panels are from Home Depot I think around $11 for 1/2" thick panels suitable for most of our constructions.


Once you have constructed the flowering chamber in the back of the space I saw a post by blaze12 to get another door for the outside and vent it with fans and louvers, then it could be shut as well when needed.



Are they popping yet?

You just need a couple cfls to get going with some seedlings and no infrastructure to speak of. Pop em man pop em .

I second the door idea with the fans/vents. It's easy to underestimate the need for fresh air before and when you first start growing, plan ahead now and save yourself and your plants many headaches later, more important than lighting.

If I were you, I would buy an AC unit and cut an area out of the door large enough to hold it. If there is an attic or maybe some sort of space above your ceiling you could run a decent exhaust to that area. Buy at least 1 oscillating fan. I would also buy a 600hps for flowering, with some sort of fan attached for cooling. I would also line the walls with mylar. Hope that helps!

alright guysi got the light set up! goin out to get a fan/mylar n stuff soon, picking up 3 clones of skunk and 3 clones of purple kush,
quick question, i have one outlet in the storage room, is it safe to plug in a power bar or something into a light timer while the cord for the grow light is also plugged into the light timer?

yes, as long as you don't exceed the amperage of the timer or outlet.

According to my light meter (and wallet), flat white paint outperforms mylar hands down, and leaves no trouble space between the walls and the space where things can grow and breed like pestilence and disease.
