No more soil, I need some advice...

We now have two grows (soil) under our belt and want to tackle a hydro setup. I just dont know which system would be best, Im a fast learner but was hoping for some advice from you guys in the hyrdo section before i go and spend a lot of money of big tubs, pumps etc.

Just so you know, we will be using the same grow tent; 120cm x 120cm x 200cm

I have had a look around, and the two that caught my eye were;

Rosemans Bubbleponics setup
https://www.rollitup.org/dwc-bubbleponics/7897-stealth-hydro-bubbleponics-systems.html

Epixbuds AIO Aero setup
https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/212657-all-one-diy-aero-cloner.html

Are there anymore I should be reading?

Realistically, how many plants could I fit in this my grow tent? They are 8-9week indica's (JC Diamond and UK Cheese)

The stuff I was going to buy are as follows;

Tank 1 (68 Litre) measures 120cm x 58cm x 19cm @ £23.50
http://www.growell.co.uk/p/1022/Hydroponic-Tanks.html
Is that ok for the res?

I just need to find 1 or two large tubs for the plants.

Also, I dont want a system for cloning, veg and flower...cant I just use the same one for all three stages?

Sorry for all the stupid questions and I look forward to hearing what you guys think!

Happy smoking bongsmilie

I don't speak "metric", but I'm guessing that your grow tent is about 4x4x7ish?

If so, I'm building a system based off of Train1's blueprints:

http://www.weedbay.net/overgrow-thebook/Hydroponics/Art4.htm

But I'm interconnecting the buckets so they're constantly circulating the water around the system in case one of my air pumps goes down.

After using Rubbermaids and buckets, to me buckets are sooooooo much better that they're not even comparable, plus only having to check and fix pH and EC in one bucket as opposed to the five or six totes you'll fit into your tent is a great bonus as well, IMHO.

FYI, I'm going to have 16 five gallon buckets in my 4x4 tent.

Good luck, and check out my journal for details and pics.

hey bob, just about to read train1s setup...those buds are something else :D

have you done something like this before? hydro that is?

So your going for 16 buckets, 16 plants I take it? The tuts I were looking at were all multiple plants in one tub, making like 24/48 smaller plants giving at least 1oz+.

Sorry to be a pain, but why do you reckon buckets are better? I havnt used either so would be good to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for your reply man!

You also may wish to look at the NFT method for growing. Its very easy and cost effective. I grew a couple plants with this method and plan to grow some more this upcoming winter. Just type in "NFT growing" in the Google search bar. Good luck bro!

Yeah, I've done DWC before, but always in large Sterilite or Rubbermaid storage boxes - don't like how the water stresses the shape of them, nor how the lids don't fit properly, and lots of other stuff.

And yeah, was thinking of doing a true SOG and going four plants per bucket, but there's a little thing that happens in my neck of the woods when you get caught with 100+ plants, so I'm sacrificing a bit of efficiency to make sure that I can run up to three or four flowering tents at once and make sure I'm always < 99 plants.

And to me the buckets are better because they don't lose their shape and, at a 1x1 footprint, you can design a system to fit any grow area perfectly as opposed to the inevitable wasting of space with storage containers which have sub-optimal measurements.

And again, filling, draining, checking pH, and topping off with nutes in three to six storage containers as opposed to one reservoir bucket can not be over-emphasized enough.

Just my $.02, everyone's gonna have their own opinion.

Whichever system you go with, good luck to you.

Thanks man, looks like a looooooooong read haha! BUT it will be worth it.

Im actually going round printing off tuts/guides and other important info. So thanks for the heads up.

Nice! Bob, that sounds like the kinda system I want to setup.

Epixbuds setup looks/sounds easier...can I try figure out which would be best for me? We have the same kinda grow area I do like the idea of buckets if its better in the end.

So, we have 16 buckets (each with 3 or 4 plants)

Are you vegging for 1/2 weeks then flower?

The 16 buckets are then connected to a larger bucket which is the same as a res?

Do you just have one powerful pump then pumping the water round the system? Do you need another for airstones?

Cheers dude!

Yo roseman

I have read, copied and pasted a lot of your work into word documents...I dont have the best of memory haha! But im sure we are all the same here :D

I dont mean this the way it sounds, but could you explain why/how your bubbleponics system is better? I though aero was the best? Im moving from soil, so no disrespect intended...just another nooooob! I can see physically how your system differs from epix and trains system...but its not clear how/why.

Also, just one more thing! Do you need multiple systems for you type? Cloner system then veg system then flower system?

Thanks guys, picking up some really important info here!

I think that a bubbleponics grow and an aero grow would run neck and neck the first 2 to 3 weeks in speed of growth. It is the initial feeding that makes the difference the first 2 to 3 weeks. AFter the roots are in the deep water, it is all DWC growing.

bubleponics is easier and cheaper to set up too. Works great for VEG and Flowering.

Hmm, I never knew that…so the first few weeks are the most important in this type of grow. The bubbleponics system looks it is simpler, maybe less to go wrong? Could you do it without a grow medium like in aero? Or are those hydroton clay pebbles essential?

Do you have your diy tutorial saved? Im not getting all the pics and I would love to print it off in work and study it at home. I like how you don’t need a res with your system.

Checked out your grow, very nice man! Is that your first bubbleponics setup? Very professional!
How much do you reckon you will get from the 4 plants in that small area?
Do you use that bubbleponics system for cloning, veggin and flower?

Im kinda going towards the bubble/aero setups…I would also rather have no medium (if poss).
You got a grow journal up on RIU? If so, I would love to see it! Cheers man!

It is the most rapid growth period.

The hydroton holds water 100% of the time plus offers support to hold the plant UP and keep the root base in the cup. it is very essential.

Do you have your diy tutorial saved?
NO, ONLY ON THE SITE. Try cleaning your harddrive first.

Okay, taking it from the top:

Haven't run this exact system yet, so still playing it by ear with the veg time, but I'm going to be pruning the plants so that each produces four colas, which I'm hoping will get me closer to the efficiency of having four plants per bucket while also keeping whatever fictitious crime I may be committing a state as opposed to federal matter (<99 plants). Figure about 2-3 weeks of veg time nuder my 400 or one good week under my 1000 will get it done, still need to do some experimenting on that.

The sixteen buckets are indeed connected to a rez outside of the tent, but that's simply another five gallon bucket, not some massive rez or anything like that.

And I actually have a smallish pond pump which will be pumping water around (185GPH) the system constantly.

Actually built a system yesterday which didn't work for me, so I'm tearing it down and starting from scratch today as soon as the paint dries on these new buckets - if you're interested you should check out my journal, documents a lot of the mistakes that I've made so far which would hopefully help you to not make them.

Thanks for the advice man, I checked out his system then went to stinkbuddies.com...got the full guide (plans, even a video) there! Looks like I have another to ponder over..so far its

Train1
Roseman
Epix
StinkBud

All look fantastic and the results speak for themselves...I just need to now figure out the pro's and con's for each. If anybody wants to chip and and help me come to a conclusion I would love to hear your thoughts/experiences with these systems!

@ rg412 thanks for the advice, its something else...do you use this system?

Today i came (no pun intended haha) across Earls aero shuttle last night too, what you guys think of that system...its also very impressive...i think that could be in for a shout as well!

https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/147239-4-inch-tube-aero-chiller.html

Decisions decisions...sorry about all the questions folks...im a total noob with this aero/bubble thing...want to do the best one and stick with it...dont want to be a dirt bag all my life hahahaha

Take it easy folks :D

Could you use those foam things that some aero users put in place instead of hydroton? I see Earl uses them and maybe some supports?
Or, are the essentail when doing a bubblegrow?

Take it from someone who's grown a decent amount in the past and has clearly bitten off more than he can chew (three total system builds and teardowns in the past week) - you're gonna wanna start small and build yourself up from there.

I'd highly, highly recommend something simple with a light-proof container and an air pump.

Doesn't matter whose plans you follow, but for your first foray into hydro, I'd highly recommend a bubbler (and a very simple one, at that) vs. going aero or E&F or drip, all of which take a little more knowledge and tinkering to get them right.

FYI, I "kinda" know what I'm doing and tried two different improvements on Train1's system which were total losses and have been tossed - going to build his exact system tonight and walk away with my tail between my legs.

It's a very humbling experience (besides costly), so in order for you to waste as little money as possible, I'd definitely start small.

Check out my journal if you'd like to see the definition of hubris followed by the definition of humility.
