Well Drab if you get stains from water in your bathtub and toilet and places where water sits I would think it would be fair to assume you have very hard water. I'd go with the hard water type.

or if you put some sort of inline filter on you sink. Like an RO system. That would give you perfect water for hydro and eliminate you hardwater issue.

Ok so here is an issue im having. My ph climbs about one point in a day or so. I have only done a grow or two in the dwc and didnt have this in the past. Did I just get lucky in the past or is something wrong now?

When you say it climbs about a point in a day, does it then stabilize or keep climbing? What pH do you start at, and where does it stabilize at? What nutrients and supplements are you using? What kind of water are you using - RO, distilled, or tap? Where are you at in your grow (how old are the plants)? Has this happened the entire grow, or just recently? How's the overall health and growth rate of the plants?

Also when the res gets low I just top it off with a gallon or two of nutrient solution. But I was talking to a buddy the other day and came up with some questions. I know lots of people just top off as I do so maybe I can get an answer here. Lets say a dwc plant is chugging along happily eating away what it needs. Im sure it will consume some compounds more readily than others so wouldnt it stand to reason that some components in the res will be much more depleted than others? If this is the case wouldnt toping off continue this cycle? In other words, the top off will add an additonal amount of a compound not readily used? Will that then lead to a potential harmful amount of whatever compound is building up in the res? Any input? I dont like the idea of a full res change as I think its a waste nitrients but it may be the best way to go.
You're right for the most part in your reckoning, in my opinion. If you add nutrients back with your top-off water you have to be careful...Roseman's spot-on here with the ratio's he talks of. If you don't add nutes back with your top-off then a weekly res change is probably necessary, and it is certainly the safest way to go.

However, I am currently in week 7 from seed, week 2 of 12/12, and I'll be doing my first and only res change (to flower nutes) on Friday. Bear in mind that I don't push the limits with my nutes...I've found that if I keep the ppm's between 800-900 max that the plants seem to get all the nutes they need...to me, all running the nutes hot does is increase the chance of nute burn and salt build-up. This res change will include a thorough flush to eliminate any built-up salts.

Again, weekly or every two week res changes are the safest way to go, though...:peace:

Thanks for the input guys. Its good to get confirmation on things. I know how easy it is to over complicate things so im glad I have a handle on it

Johnny thats an awesom ass harvest!Well done!..

Dystopiai..i feel you about running the HIGH octane PPm's cause it can cause a toxic SALt buildup that will lead to nute lock.

I have done 7 complete grows and I always killed them or nearly killed them everytime, every grow, mostly with too high of nute use, feeding them to much. I'd get to 1200 to 1400 ppm, get yellow tips, curled leaves, dead leaves falling off, and have to back off and take two gallons out, put two gallons of plain water back, and wait. Just hope and pray they would not die. They would bounce back and I'd almost kill them again. I have added up to two extra weeks of wasted time per grow reviving them, when I could have been growing them and saved two weeks. And there were my many dumb stupid experiments that I am too embarrassed to talk about.
Well,,this grow, I have used half the nutrients I normally use, I have had NO nute burn and except for leaving the pumps in a week too long without cleaning them, I have not made any big mistakes and the grow is growing much smoother and more calm too . I've only paniced twice on thsi grow! LOL but I am getting there.

This is not a hobby for people who do not have patience.

Absolutely agree, awesome harvest JonnyB!!!

Like I said, I'm only running 800-900 ppms. This is the first grow where I'm trying just one reservoir change. I just got done with an overnight flush using plain pH'd water and Clearex. The flush water started at 90ppm last night, and ended at 135ppm this morning. I don't really know, but I reckon that means there wasn't much salt build-up. In previous grows when I ran hotter nutes my flush water would end up with a much higher ppm, up to like 700ppm.

And the growth rate certainly doesn't seem to be suffering

My nutrients are taking WAY too long to get here, and I'm worried my plants might die. Do you think this stuff would work?? I'm getting desperate...

If you got them from SH, you should give them a call. I've found some orders fall thru the cracks and dont get processed. That just happened to me. If you're sure they are in dire need of nutrients, Miracle Grow will work fine to veg them until you get more complex nutes. Shake it up really good and make sure it's totally disolved. Add it slowly until you reach your desired ppm. Be sure to check your pH as well. When you get your nutes, change it over the next time you flush.
