Is Gay Marriage Really That Big Deal?

Karen Smith, left, and Laura Espinosa react to California's supreme court decision to uphold Proposition 8 in San Francisco.

Although it pains me to see a lesbian cry, the people had their say, there. If more people had wanted gay marriage, the court imposed lifting of the original voted on ban would have remained in effect, and the lesbians would still be be smiling, and married, despite the will of the people being legitimately expressed at the ballot box, and ignored. And that's nothing to smile about, even if you did get your way at the expense of your neighbors "equal right" to dictate laws concerning behavior and conduct. Laws that we all must abide by, equally.

And prostitution should only be legal in states with laws making it so. Gotta love Nevadans. :eyesmoke:
actualy Prop 8 was the first and only amendment in any state that actualy too peoples rights AWAY. That's something i have a problem with.

I personaly have no issue with anyone whos gay.
It's as gross as two uglys or fatties displaying their love.:-P

Don't know why some feel they own the patent on marriage?
How can a state enforce such a sexist practice?
(I can get fired from my job for the telling of a gay joke)

Is there not more then one form for christian marriage already?:polygamy?
Marriage is a social, religious, spiritual, or legal union of human individuals.
Marriage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The reasons givin from the right are sooooo ludicrous.
I herd today a few new reasons, schools will have to rewrite books, churches will get sued for hate speech???
Have to say it's better then the argument of 'why not a man and a animal then.'
Heres a few more reasons, i thought was funny.
12 Reasons | Gator Gay-Straight Alliance
  1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control are not natural.
  2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people cannot get legally married because the world needs more children.
  3. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children because straight parents only raise straight children.
  4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful, since Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.
  5. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and it hasn't changed at all: women are property, Blacks can't marry Whites, and divorce is illegal.
  6. Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.
  7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are always imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.
  8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people makes you tall.
  9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage license.
  10. Children can never succeed without both male and female role models at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.
  11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to cars or longer lifespans.
  12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages will for gays & lesbians
Polygamy is outlawed as well, some other poster may have already informed you. Morals should not be legislated. Criminality should necessitate a victim. Sanctioning marriage by the states is an odd thing unto itself, granted the religious overtones, but it's origin was contractual in nature to begin with, and regarded the betrothed female as property of a calculable value. Or that is the most accepted take on it's origins, and is certainly true of early European arrangements. As to equity within this established tradition, if we are to put it into a secular understanding, should not preclude homosexual marriages. Nor should we proscribe polygamy, in my estimation, although more could be argued about that institution I believe. Such as thoughts on the imbalance in structure that could be produced in taxation concerns, though a legislature not over encumbered or just plain lazy should hypothetically be able to reconcile such things. For an example of just how little a detriment has occurred to "traditional" marriages we need only to look to Massachusetts, which had started with the lowest divorce rate Country-wide and has seen that statistic fall a fraction of a percent during the sanctioning of such same-sex marriages. Admittedly the data comes from a rather insignificant period of time, overall, and the drop is minuscule, but it has not gone in the other direction. Enough of my two cents, I should read further to see if any of this has already been injected into this conversation to avoid it's redundancy, and an appearance of my ineptitude. Marriages in secular offices are obviously not religious. No priest, no nuns, none of that, just an orderly taking down information. Marriages performed in churches by a priest or whatever, obviously those marriages are religious. But there are already two types of marriages now, the secular kind, and the religious kind. They are given equal protections under the law, and obviously religion has no place inside a secular government establishment. So, there is no reason that gays should not be able to get married in secular government facilities, as religion is not involved in those marriages (and, by law, must not be).

Civil unions are not accepted at the federal level, so those couples are denied the right to file jointly and so on. That's okay, but then NOBODY should be allowed to file jointly, married, unionized, or whatever. If it's good for one segment, it's good for everyone, otherwise it is discriminatory. Very similar to the laws precluding inter-racial marriages, that were eventually overturned. Eventually the anti-gay discriminatory laws on the books will also be overturned; it's just a matter of time.
There is the point. I'll Rep+ this as soon as I get my privileges back.

Fuck the church. They take 10% of everyones money because you can buy your way into heaven, with cash. It's a scam, it's a pyramid scheme and there are a whole lot of takers.

Priests must abstaine. I guess molesting little boys is considered abstaining by church standards?

The bible is just different peoples personal views of how they viewed jesus. It was not handed down by some fiery god, it was invented, made up, much like a Readers Digest.

Thou shalt not kill (an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth) :?:

Thou shalt not kill (if your neighbor plants 2 crops in the same field it is your duty to gather others together and stone him) :?:

You can and will go to hell for mixing 2 fabrics on your body. (guess those poly-cotton blends will be the death of us all) :?:

Should I continue with the contradictions?
Maybe you can let someone else do that for you. Here is the link... http://www.evilbible.com/ bongsmilie

Not for nothing, the historicity of THE Jesus of the bible is completely debatable, and I am convinced of it's fabrication completely. The story is severely plagiarized from other ancient fables and mythology. What other institutions and understandings do we still grasp onto so readily from the Bronze Age? bongsmilie

How About This?

Okay.. Ready? It Doesn't Matter What I Think Of Gay Marriage ..JUST LIKE IT SHOULDNT FUCKING MATTER WHAT ANYONE THINKS OF SOMEONES PERSONAL LIFE. 2 People want to be together.. they're gonna be together. Whether YOU or your dumbass bible thumping grandma like it or bloody not...

ahh and Fuck Religion. That Is All.

A recent poll result in Iowa showed that 92% of people were not in any way impacted by this, so I am wondering how would the 8% others were mpacted assuming that they didn't include gay people in this survey. I can see city clerks having a little more paper work, priests who will actually be generating more cash and spending less time with the young ones, wedding planners, tuxedo manufacturers and the hotel and travel industry. Did I leave anyone out?

Thanks for that, I couldn't remember the citation for that statistic. I did want to bring that one to the table, but the Mass one was all this frizzled brain could semi-produce. You make very valid points about the possible positive effects for everyone.bongsmilie

Who uses crystal meth?

According to mental health workers, police and research scientists, the people who use crystal meth include:

  • Large numbers of rural and small town poor across North America.
  • Some young people in the rave and dance scene.
  • Some young people who want to lose weight.
  • Gay males involved in the dance scene or who frequent bathhouses

It's a fact!

There's a lot of crazy shit in the bible, but ask your mom where exactly marriage is "defined" because I couldn't find it.

1 Samuel 18:27

27 David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
Good point. Maybe it could be found somewhere in here? http://www.evilbible.com/

...and those that are gay, often drive. Does that mean those that drive, are often gay?

Pull your head out.

Newsflash, calling something a fact doesn't make it so. Perhaps you could cite a source for this "fact" ? Don't make me have to do ALL the legwork around here. There's a site called Google.com, if you're not familiar. You can type in the stuff your looking for in the thing that is called a "search bar" and lists of things appear regarding those keywords. Don't strain yourself over there.:dunce:

And how exactly is that?
it is because there was a law passed that GAVE marraige rights to gays. prop 8 took those rights away, but not retroactively.

besides, if you want to be informed, you have the internet. it isn't my job to drop what is common knowlege on people.

Get your story straight...no pun intended. By a 4 to 3 decision, the California Supreme "Court" overturned the legitimate will of the people. The people were then forced to do it again...no pun intended.

gay marriage

It's not the most important issue of the day, but a few unhappy gays who think they want what heteros want, and are envious because they will never have children.

It's envy right?

It's envy right?

Did you guys simply not develope the sense of empathy when you were growing up?

Do you know what it means to put yourself in another persons position?

Do you honestly believe that? They're envious of people who can create a child because they're sexual orientation and anatomy won't allow it? Really? Or did you just not think that one all the way through..?

Give me a guess on what % of the gay population is looking to adopt a child. You know that other %, the majority of the gay population, the ones NOT actively seeking adoption... what about them? They're all envious too, even though none of them want a kid.. so that's why they need to be accepted?

See man, you go 1..2..14..32..55 then you wind up somewhere way over in 542..694..845.. Take the train of thought through to each station, it took me 2 steps to get to the 'fail' part of your rationale. You telling me you can't see past 2 steps? Do you know how to make pop tarts?

It is not about acceptance. It's about equal rights.

Not "seperate but equal", equal.
