what should I look for in a grinder?

I want to buy a grinder and don't want some generic one that you might find at 7-11. I mainly smoke out of glass and just break up my weed. But I've been rollin more blunts recently and decided I need a grinder.

I've heard of a keef catcher and some other things. But I want to ask some weed veterans and find out some good info

thanks!

It definitely is pricey but worth it. I've owned a few grinders and the space case is by far superior. If your an everyday smoker and plan on smoking for awhile you'll get your money out of it.

i had a sharp stone which would be comparable. found it for 25$ at a head shop in Chicago. but the space case is definitely the Cadillac.

LOL! That's the same "generic crap you'd find at 7-11" that you said you didn't want to buy in your original post.

$100 for a fucking grinder? Are you kidding me?

Just go to your local head shop and look around. I wouldn't drop more than $30 for a grinder/pollen collector.

Space case or diamond grind are the ways to go if you're looking for a good grinder.......

Just look at the teeth and you can tell if it will be good.....a cheap grinder like http://cgi.ebay.com/4-piece-Space-spice-Herb-Grinder-Pollen-case-g5_W0QQitemZ370253786673QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5634d86e31&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Has pointed teeth that probably aren't sharp on the sides...

Space case and diamond grinds have teeth that are flat to the touch but the sides are sharp as fuck and they aren't pointed......
Another thing to look for is a rubber or plastic strip where the magnet pulls the top piece and the actual grinding takes place....If theres no buffer sometimes you get metal flakes from the grinding action on the sides of the grinder.

$100 for a grinder? That is retarded.

You can get a MASSIVE Mendo Mulcher for 1/2 that price.

I have a $30 Sweetstone that does the job. I have used tons of different grinders and I honestly could not tell a difference in the grinded herb. The expensive grinders have a better feel in your hand but I honestly couldnt tell any discernible difference in the finished product. My next grinder will be a Mendo.

I buy 4 piece grinders and remove the screen so I have a 3 piece the herb drops into bottom. I talked to the guy who makes mendo's and he said they make a blank so that it is a 4 piece grinder with no screen (much bigger bottom compartment). It is all your preference. I don't like 2 piece grinders and I don't like kief so I take the screen out - if you like kief buy a four piece.

The cheap generic ones aren't bad. I have 2 of them and both are cheap, for $9 and $12, made of steel. The space cases are nice, made from aluminum. You're guaranteed quality with the brand name. However, like jrh72582 said, they're expensive. And that grinder you linked on ebay looks good to me. But, if you're buying online, go brand name and spend the extra money. If you're buying from a store or on the street, you wanna check for a few things in quality..

1. Is it smooth twisting?
When you open the grinder, make sure you feel the edges as you open it. One grinder I had, when I opened it, I could feel the unevenness as though it wasn't cut right. This is a buyer beware situation. I learned my lesson the hard way, lesson passed on. It's a silly thing because they are made by machines but someone has to set it up right.

2. Is it easy to close and open?
You did the open test, now the tightening test. Close it and TIGHTEN it as hard as you can. If it opens easily after you've tightened it, you've got a good grinder. If it doesn't open easily, it's because the threads aren't aligned properly allowing that extra space to further tighten it. You can always just try not to tighten it too much. But, guess how many times someone else has accidentally turned it the wrong way and actually struggled to open it, not realizing they're tightening it more. No more mistakes like that.

3. How big are the holes?
I've had grinders where the holes were so small the marijuana couldn't fall through. That's necessary if you're tryin to get the kif. It has to at least hit the screen first.

4. Is the magnet strong?
Hold the top part of the grinder by itself. Now, try to shake it out. If it falls right out, the magnet is weak and may cause you more trouble than it's worth in the long run. It's not so much of an issue with aluminum because that metal is naturally lighter. However, even my heavier steel grinder still holds pretty strong, 6 years running. The most recent grinder I got doesn't hold for shit and that one's actually lighter.

5. Is it a good size?
They come big and small but does it fit YOUR hand?? Comfort is always a factor.

Last bit of info. 3-part grinders are a blessing and a curse. Both of the grinders I now have are 3-part. I bought the first one so that I could get the kif. The problem was that the screen is placed up against the holes. So much marijuana got stuck between the screen and the holes. One day, I just knocked the screen out because I got tired of seeing so much stuck, I had a 4-part grinder (that I gave away), and I was out lol. The good thing about it is that the marijuana that fell through was the perfect consistency for rolling blunts. I stopped caring about kif so it was good for me.

So, if you want the kif, 4-part is the only way to go. 2-parts suck because the marijuana doesn't always come out so easily.

The teeth issue is nonsense in my opinion. My grinders have pointed teeth and they grind perfectly. The diamond shaped teeth do just as good a job.

The good thing about not having sharp sides is that it doesn't cut up the stem in your weed. You can put the stem in the pointed teeth version and have it basically strip the weed off the stem leaving it intact so you can get rid of it.

The diamond teeth are good in that you don't have to use as much strength to twist, of course.

Fuck, I wrote this long ass post and it didn't even go through. That sucks balls. I'll keep it short

If you're buying online, go with the brand name and spend the extra money.

If you're buying in a store, there's a few things to check.
1. Does it open smoothly. Cheap grinders will open unevenly and you can tell by feeling the edges as you twist it open.
2. Does it close too tightly. Close it back and tighten it. If it's hard to open, means it's not cut right. There should be a "stop" so you can't close it tightly.
3. How big are the holes. Some grinders come with tiny holes making it hard to come down to reach the screen and thus kif you want.
4. How does it fit in your hand? Comfort is huge with me. Tiny grinders just annoy me

Make sure to get a 4-part grinder. 3-parts aren't good because the screen is usually set up against the holes. So much weed gets caught between the screen and the underside. I had to push out the screen on my grinder because it annoyed me + I didn't care about kif anymore + I ran out of weed that night. However, it's now my favorite grinder to use. The consistency is perfect for rolling blunts. That's how I like it. I don't have to fight with it like a 2-part grinder. Open the bottom and pour into a waiting blunt.

After reading every post which were all useful, I found this on ebay which looks to be the most promising and to my taste

http://cgi.ebay.com/5-PIECE-SharpStone-Space-Herb-Grinder-w-Pollen-Case-g3_W0QQitemZ110311809338QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item19af18a13a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

edit: although 2.25in diameter isn't that big.. hm.
edit2: although again, smaller may be better for travel, but do you guys think 2.25 inche diameter would even be able to grind enough weed for a 1+g blunt?
