Clone trouble... help!!!

A quick question, why cant i make any clones that dont die after a few days???

Ok, so heres the deal..... I got 2 white widow moms which were grown from seed and i took 5 cuts off each 1 (over a few weeks) which all worked perfectly, just chopped, dipped in rooting powder, stuck in rockwool cubes, popped em in heated propagator and BOOM, roots hangin out the side of the rockwool in a few days.

Now, i got a new propagator, a bigger 1, but the new 1 has a clear lid and the old 1 had a frosted lid, would this make a difference?

Its drivin me mad, i must have wasted 17 potential clones.

Oh, 1 other thing, all the unsuccessfull clones were taken off clones of the original moms, but i didnt think it mattered, I always thought that clones could make more clones indefinately!!!!!!

Any ideas much appreciated!!!!

ps. 1 last thing, they stay lookin good for a few days then just go a funny colour and wilt, and pulling the stems no roots started, the tip just goes dark (nearly black at the tip)

It sounds like somethings different from your last attempt.
Did you Ph the rockwool?

Light is not good for roots, I would cover it.

you can clone a clone a hundred times.

I would toss the rockwool and go get rapid rooter cubes and come cloning gel.

If you cant afford that or it is just not passable then soak your rockwool cubes over night in water that is Ph 5.0 that will neutralize the Ph. set them to drain on a towel. For feed use half of whats recommended in your solution. If you don't have starter feed use about 200ppms of flower nutes. water once, spray them with water and cover them with a dome. keep temps about 80° and you will have roots in a week.

If you managed to get roots hangin out the side of rockwool in a few days you must be a master grower, because thats impossible.bongsmilie

I dont think going from frosted to clear lid would affect you like that. If anything youd think a clear lid would do better.

Do you have a bug problem at all??

What are happening specifically to the clones when they die. (EX. Wilt, turn yellow and die, get dark green and die)

Thanks for all the replies guys, i never ph the cubes, never bothered cos they worked b4.
Just for the record i dint mean literally a few days to root, it was around a week, some 10 days.
I have now got rooting gel, and some root riot cubes but i dont know what is gonna happen with these yet, i cut some 5 days ago an 1 was laid down this morning (the 1 in rockwool), no roots, other 2 still look ok for now.
Im gonna try restricting light now an see what happens.
To answer the question about the death, they look nice green for 2 or 3 days then overnight they go a darker green (towards brown even), after that just sag more an more as the days roll on :(

OK, That was your problem.

Rockwool is naturally high in ph. You need to fix that before using them.
Then remember those things hold water like nothing else, dont over water them.

You dont have to worry about that with root riot cubes. they are the same as rapid rooters. What you want to do is split the cube about 1/2" down then put clone in there and close it. Once it is closed break off a small piece and put it in the hole.

That way the sides of the clone touches all the way up the stem.
Water them lightly once, mist and cover, keep dark the first 24 hours.

yeah i'd like to know how you got roots growin in 3 days lol
I don't think he's lying about getting roots that quick cause I just tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I definetly had roots in less than a week. In fact I burnt the bitches kinda bad cause I left em in the my ghetto humidome a day or two too long. I'm just sayin I think it's feasible.

Ive been cloning in RR's and never gotten roots faster than 7-10 days. You guys must be expert cloners. Thats awesome. Watch the heat inside the dome if your using a heat mat with the light close by. Anything over 85 and they will start to lay down for the count.

If you are using RW cubes...

I recommend you water by weight... my 2" cubes + 8" clones weigh 35~40 grams MAX...

Ditch the "dome" and any misting...

...

A clone that is allowed to survive, but does not have all of it's needs met will hurry the fuck up in making roots to search for water and nutrients...

...

A clone that is given everything it needs may ROT before it roots... it feels no need to... it's got everything right there...

...

I say keep your clones alive but thirsty... they'll root.. or die real fast..

Just my opinion...

Here are some of my clones...

Good luck...

I use rockwool to clone, no problems here and I do 64 cuttings every month. 10 days for roots to show. 400 watt MH 24/7 24 inches above cuttings, no humidome, water once a day. temps are 75-80, humidity 60%, no heating mat.

Some plants just have hard to clone genetics too.

I am using white widows, but they could be from crap seed bank, I aint too sure, all the cuttings off the original moms worked fine.

I took a couple of cuttings 2 days ago, rooting gel, slapped em in root riot cubes and put the propagator in a brightly lit room (daylight), cos i suspected the 13w cfl bulb i had above the prop was too weak, before i had the propagator in the main vegging box so it had alot of light, at the moment they look quite good (1 was in the vegging box under half a plastic bottle but it wasnt gettin humid enough an started leaning over quite a bit but a day in the propagator has made it it stand back up straight), fingers crossed these work or its back to the drawing board.

1 other thing, i put a thermo in and its reading around 90 degrees so it might be cookin em :-(

Yeah you shouldn't probably use the frosted lid as it would block light, essentially.

Lets clear up(at least for me) what lid we are talking about.

Is it the lid to the reservoir area? or is it the dome that keeps in humidity?

It sounds to me it is the lid that separates the top of the clones from the root zone, in which case you want it to be covered/non transparent as light hurts roots.

If it is indeed the dome itself that is clear vs frosted, i would go with clear, but frosted wouldn't be detrimental as long as it lets in some decent light.
