Bro those are very nice for 37 days. I am still working on my first harvest my first 2 huge plants were male I finally have a female budding. I am glad you posted this because I have wondered about growing in those aerogardens. Looks awesome.

Thanks dude. Yeah the AG works ok... Theres quite a few decent AG grows here on RIU. Several people that post on this thread have links to their own AG grows in their signatures, so check 'em out!

Thanks man. I guess the LR2s get 17-19in tall, mines about 14in right now (1/2 way through her life), so shes still got some more vertical growth in her. I swear she does seem big though compared to most other lowryder pics I have seen. She would probably be shorter and more compact if the AG hood could raise in smaller incraments. Every time I had to raise it she stretched a lot. If you look at some of the earlier pics when the hood was at the lowest setting you can see how compact they were. I'm looking forward to using some lighting that I can raise as little or as much as I want for my next grow so that the plants never have to stretch too much.

Forgot to answer your question about the cabinet....

Its just an old steel storage locker, like something you'd find in a mechanics shop or garage or something. Its very solid and has conveniently placed holes for wires and even has vents at the top. I found it on craigslist for $25, lined the interior with mylar I got at my hydro shop and then put everything else inside. Its basically the perfect size for the footprint of the AG, though it does not provide for much horizontal/bushy growth. You can kinda see what it looks like in the pics on the very first page of this journal. The people who sold it to me where some serious rednecks, several miles outside the city. Thought they might go Deliverance on my ass lol. Got outa' there quick-style haha

Whats up man, thanks for subscribing. Yeah, if you've got 8 CFLs rated at, say, 1600 lumens each, then you've only actually got 1600 lumens TOTAL! When that guy posted on my thread about it I googled it and found this on another marijuana growing forum (not RIU). I'm quoting the guy who wrote this exactly:

Sorry to burst everyone bubble, but lumens DO NOT add together, at least not in the sense that 2 cfl's that output 2000 lumens will be as bright as a 4000 lumen cfl's. Contrary to popular belief, it's just not the way it works, you can have 50 2000 lumens cfls side by side and if you use a luxometer to measure the light output it will only measure 2000 lumens. I've actually witnessed a demonstration of this. On the other had you still will double the amount of photons and usable light the plant recieves, so all is no lost, i suggest going with the highest wattage bulbs you can afford and as many as you can afford within reason.

On a side note, he goes on and provides this link to what he thinks are the best flouro's available for growing, and I must admit that they're the best I've seen. Two 55W T5's providing 5,000 lumens each? And only a 2ft long fixture? Thats pretty dank

Yea, its a T5 Bulb by "standards", but its not a regular tube, its a U-shaped one with a plug on one end.




It is correct that lumens do not directly add up into one light source.

There is no way to increase the true intensity of a single light by adding more of them.

1600 lumen bulb will always put out 1600 lumen, but if you have 2 of them right next to eachother you nearly double the area that those 1600 lumen cover, not to mention eliminate the fade-off at the edge of the light its emitting where it is adjacent to the other light.

CFLs work awesome for a few reasons, the simple ones like, cost, availability, heat, but also stuff nobody really thought about that ended up helping.

CFLs work the best when you spread out a bunch of them, well when people buy cfls they usually just get a bunch of them and since you cant stack them on top of each other you are forced to spread them out, giving more area for the plant to spread out to and try to get light energy.

Since the light that CFLs put out is not as intense as HIDs it doesn't penetrate as well, but you can spread them out so its not as big of a deal.

The best cfl setup is one with lights all around the plants, not just above them.


P.S. Lowes and Home Depot sell 4200/4000 lumen bulbs for 15/16 a pop. no need for a special ballast.

And I don't know if you're interested in LED lighting at all, but HTG has the brand new generation of UFO LED 90W fixtures on sale right now for like $180 or so. They're normally like $400, so its a pretty big price cut... cheapest I've seen them anywhere, at least. HTG is great, lots of good shit and really low prices. They do ebay auctions too, so you might even be able to get what you're looking for even cheaper than off their website.

Yeah the bulb on that HTG fixture is pretty unique. Allowed them to pack 5k lumens per bulb into a 2ft ballast. They've got another one thats like $20 cheaper that has identical specs only its 4ft long.

So I've been trying to decide what kind of lighting to go with for my next setup... and I think you might be the man to answer my questions. I'll be able to afford a 400w digital HID setup w/ inline cooling and the works, but I am wondering about the benifits of being able to place fluoros closer to the plant and decrease stretching. I want to grow really compact, bushy plants, and I guess I'm wondering if an HID placed high overhead is going to make that more difficult than using something like the T5 mentioned above that I can constantly keep just a couple inches above the plants (in addition to supplemental side lighting).

And I cut down your quote a little just to save room, btw. My quest to find out how lumens add ultimately ended with this post, which you've probably already seen.

If you can afford inline cooling for HID that will probably give you the most bud, but I don't think its the best solution.

You could space out a bunch of those 300W equivs (maybe like 6) that are 4200 a pop all around the plants at various heights, wouldn't be as expensive or sketchy as an inline-cooled HID and you would have comparable results.

So how many watts do those 300W equivalent bulbs actually run? And they fit into regular light sockets? When I was originally setting this grow up I thought I had looked at Home Depot/Lowes for bulbs and dont remember seeing any big-ass CFLs like that. Thats a cool setup though. Plants look beautiful.

So an a different topic, should I have been pruning my plant in order to allow more light to the fan leaves and most promising looking budsites? And if so is it too late to get started on that? Should I just leave her be? Hmmm...

Lowes has 60w that do 4000 lumen and Home depot has 68w that do 4200 lumen.

They have just recently started stocking them (past few months or so)

And yes, regular sockets.
