If I had and Hid light with twenty thousand lumens and a t5 with twenty thousand lumens are the lights equally good or is one better than the other. Explain why where I can understand please. Thank you.

well i would say hps is better since it as a little better penetration to the lower branches but if the t5 is the right temp i think 3700 is should be very close depends on if you can vent the little extra heat from the heats easily if yes il go hps if no id go t5

if they are both the same lumens then :
1) go for the one with the less watts if your worried about money
2) go for the one with less heat cause you can get it closer if heat is an issue

So hps and t5 doesn't matter. Its the lumens and the color that your worried about?
hps will give you alot of penetration and alot of heat but works very well. most people use t5's with 5600k tubes for veg and then hps which is about 2700k for flower. i use hps for both with good results. if your deciding what to buy then get a hps if you can only have one light source

I have t5. I have veg bulbs and flower bulbs. I don't have to worry about penetration. I have a unit above my plant and below my plants. I was hoping that hid and t5 didn't matter and only lumens did.

but how many extra watts are you going to use to equal hid lumens with your t5s. also..you can only pack so many light strips per sqf until you run out of room. hid gives you more concentration.

perfect explanation!
HIDs put of alot more heat than T5's and require much more cooling. I have a 6 lamp 4 ft HOT5 in a small closet box 2x4 and I dont even need to cool it all all.. Hell I dont even have a fan running in there right now and its under 82f. I had a 400W HPS in the same place before I got the T5's and I had 6 120mm High CFM PC fans, 1 giant 200mm "big daddy" antec fan for exhaust and still temps stayed over 90f with the door wide open.I sent the HPS back and got the T5's and im very happy so far. As I said, I am not tunning any exhause at all and temps stay under 83f all the time even w/out any fans at all and the door shut.

i couldnt see flowering with just t5's working well for anything but smaller plants without alot of supplemental lighting. my 400hps gives me enough light to grow 30 small pepper plants and 2 fully grown strawberry plants along with the rest of my grow

of the same lumens they are equal, but how many lumens is a good t5? 50,000? 1000 watt hps is 150,000 and 600 watt is 95,000. The more the lumens the better but you pick what's best for your op. Moving from fluorescent to hps is the best move i've ever made.

Lumens are lumens and PAR lumens are PAR lumens but light energy varies between the different type of ways it is created so just comparing lumens or PAR lumens or watts is not a truly valid comparison.

The most important thing when it comes to growing is grams per watt and HID lighting produces more grams per watt than any type of fluorescents do.

To get an idea of what would be needed to equal say a 400 watt HPS HID using other types of lighting see the attachment below.

When it comes to vegging while there is not a comparison shown for MH bulbs keep in mind thatMH bulbs are better when it comes to vegging then HPS so it would take even more of each of the other types of lights to equal what a MH would be capable of doing.

i hear ya...ive grown under cfls, tubes, i even wasted money on led pieces of shit. nothing compares to hid as of yet. ill veg with flouros if i veg any longer than 2-3 weeks but other than that i keep everything under my hps, except my mothers and cuttings...those can stay under the tubes since they dont need much light to veg.:joint:...

i have my tubes put away but they were t-8's. i used to make walls out of them to reflect light when all i had was them and cfl's
