Do not use any soil that has slow release fertilizer in it. Any quality name brand potting soil will do, as long as it does not contain slow release fertilizer in it, but there are numerous special mixes that do work better but then you can take a quality potting soil and add perlite and in some cases people like to add some sand and or vermiculite and they can pretty much duplicate the higher dollar specialty potting soils.

You will eventually need nutes but that is a LONG subject of its own and one with very varied opinions. But no nutes for about a month. Some say 3 to 4 weeks and some say 4 to 5 weeks and some will say even longer but whenever you do begin to feed mix a weak solution, like ¼ or 1/3 strength and then do not feed every watering or you will kill your babies with kindness. Seed have an initial supply of nutes in them for the seedlings to live off of so if you have a soil with slow release ferts in it and or feed your seedlings to soon you will burn them and maybe kill them.
Ok thanks man. But what do you and smokinon the curb mean when you say like 1/4 str and and all these 20 20 02 and stuff like what does that all mean and do you think i could get away with just puting the seeds in the soil and not put nutrients in it and it will still grow? i mean its only reg seeds i wouldnt think that they would be needing to much carring?

Mh are alot better and if you have a small garden 1 or two is just fine. They are great for veg cause they omit a blue light spectrum. HPS if you want one (Iwould get two) 150 watt or higher anything round that will be fine. HPS are great for flowerin cause they omit red light great for flowerin.

I'm actually looking to grow between 4 and 6 plants, depending on Los Angeles medical cannabis laws. I hear you can grow 4 mature AND 4 immature plants, however I have read that you can grow EITHER 6 mature plants OR 12 immature plants... I'm a bit confused on the laws and I'm trying to understand them a bit better. Do you happen to have any insight to this?

Anyway, I'll probably end up getting a 600W HPS for flowering and MH (unsure about the wattage for MH) for veg state. How does that sound, Ole Guru of the Plant?

oh well i already started it in a glass would you suggest i move it? or just let sleeping dogs lie?

You will get varied opinions on that. Some toss the beans in a glass of water and let them float around. Some use the paper towel method but do not cover them in any way and then have to keep up on keeping them moist. I put them in wet paper towels in Tupperware. One grower I know that has GREAT success plants his beans directly into the soil and keeps the soil moist and lets them germ and grow right in/from the soil.

In reality getting beans to pop is easy as falling off a log but getting a higher percentage of them to pop and to live does require a little extra effort and attention. Consider how beans will pop in nature. Many will have anything less than perfect conditions and will be right in the soil or partially under leaves and stuff and they will grow so it is not like you need perfect conditions for beans to pop.

Something that happened to me once that I have to laugh about is being single I am not all that domesticated and at times I will let my home go and it will turn into something like the Frat house in the movie "Animal House." Well one time I had some beans in pieces of plastic that were not sealed bags but plastic folded and taped and then taped to a heavy piece of paper that was folded like a greeting card and I kept them in a bin in my refrigerator. I had tossed some veggies in the same bin and then totally forgot about them and left them for like ever. At times my refrigerator will be like a science experiment. I will put uncovered food in and leave it until it will walk out on its own or I will clean it in say July or August and find something way in the back that looks like a Chia Pet and after staring at it and the container it is in long enough I will figure out that it is what is left from last Thanksgiving’s turkey.

Anyway the veggies in the bin turned into some totally new life form and there was a layer of blackish goo that made swamp water look and smell good in comparison. I didn’t think about the beans being under the former veggies and in the goo and then one day I cleaned out the mess and found the heavy folded paper stuck to the bottom of the bin like wallpaper to a wall. I peeled it off and opened it up and some of the toxic goo had made its way into some of the folded pieces of plastic. Much to my amazement some of the beans had popped and had small tap roots.

Now they were worthless by that point, they popped and died, but there is an example of beans in a refrigerator in the bottom bin, where it would be the coldest, and in a goo that had to be nastier than what you would skim off the top of a septic tank and a number of the beans popped. That of course was in anything but ideal conditions.

So it is not hard to pop beans and they do not need optimal conditions to pop but the better conditions you give them will increase the percentage of those you try to pop to pop and then give them a better chance to live.

But after my unintended bean popping science experiment experience I realized that popping beans is not rocket science and that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

My advice is to what you want to do. Stick with what you have if you are comfortable with it and enough people say it works and if you are paranoid about things grab some Tupperware and take about four paper towels and fold them to fit the container and wet them and then pour off any excess moisture and put your beans between the folded paper towels and seal the lid, place it somewhere half warm like on top of a refrigerator or a computer monitor and then look in about 12 to 24 hours and see if you have something cooking. If not checking will refresh your air and then you wait another 12 to 24 hours and check again. If after about a week to ten days you have nothing I would say give up because if they were going to pop about 90% of the time or more they would have popped by then and unless they are really high dollar beans I would not waste any more time on them and start with a new batch.

If the instructions for your ferts say something like one teaspoon or two teaspoons or whatever per gallon of water only use one quarter of the amount they tell you to use per gallon in the beginning. Make a weak mixture so you do not over fert and burn your plants.

The 20-20- 20 or whatever is the percentage of the different chemicals in the fertilizer, the Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash (Potassium).

At different stages of growth marijuana plants want or need more of one type of those chemicals than at other times so you need to learn what it needed the most and when it is needed the most.

If you are very picky and want to learn all there is to know you can many times research various strains, or email a breeder or seedbank, and find out if a particular strain does prefer higher or lower than average levels of different nutes at different times. Some strains feed very heavily on some nutes and then you can grow another strain and feed it the same way and get very different result or maybe burn it or even kill it.

Normally most strains are not that different or that picky but a few are and knowing everything you can about what you are growing and what it wants and needs the most and when that is will help you to avoid problems and maximize growth and yield and quality.

I believe I mentioned it before but I know a GREAT grower who starts his beans out right in the soil. He plants them and then keeps the soil moist and they pop and then push through the surface. He believes it creates a more vigorous plant. While I GREATLY respect his knowledge and experience I somewhat question the creating a more vigorous plant thing in that I believe plant vigor comes from genetics BUT in a way he may still be onto something.

Taproots have very fine tiny hairs on them and any handling of them, no matter how delicate you are, can damage some of them when you plant then into your soil so maybe where he gets more vigor is not from creating more vigor than the plants genetics can create but he may have eliminated any damage to the tiny hairs on the taproot so the plants grow at their maximum vigor and compared to something germed outside of the soil and then planted they may be more vigorous. But that is only a theory or opinion of mine. So yes you can germ right in the soil. It happens in nature all the time each and every spring BUT you do have to make sure the beans stay moist and it is not as easy to do in a less controlled environment like between paper towels in Tupperware. So it is a six of one and half a dozen of the other thing. Both have their advantages and you have to decide what it more important to you.

Will you be having clones or new seedlings started/growing and then vegging while one batch is finishing flowering so you can then throw the next batch right into flower, or at least very soon? If so you need both lights but if you will start a grow and finish it and then start another one after that you can get away with just one light, that is as long as it is high enough wattage to cover your grow area. You can buy a 600 watt HPS light and ballast and then buy a 600 watt conversion metal halide bulb that will run off of your HPS ballast and not need two complete light setups. But again if you will have a steady stream of plants growing where there will be different plants in different stages that require different lights then yes you will need two, or more depending on area size and wattage, lights.

Thanks Brick. I plan on Getting clones from my caregivers, raising them from clone to harvest, and then starting over with 6 new clones. Rinse and repeat! Do you think a 4'x4'x'6.5 will be big enough for 6 plants? If so, how tall should I let them get?

Heres a newbie question. (this is all fantasy of course and none of this is real life and for entertainment purposes only)

3 weeks old white widow in soil only an inch tall and has second pair of leaves. Has t5 cfl's pushing 20k lumens 2 inches away. Why so small? Other than that it is really healthy looking color wise. Other plants planted same time have surpased it. I thought maybe it could be over watered due to a wick system I had set up. I know small plants do need all that water. Please help for this is a future mother and my only one of that kind. Oh yeah soil, ff nutes 1/2 dose/18/6 time changed to 24hrs.

NPK is the nutrient ratio found on most plant foods. 20-20-20 is good for vegatation 8-34-8 is good for flowerin.

HPs is mostly for flowerin cause it omits more in the red light spectrum which is good for bud growth. Man cfls are tose spiral looking energy save light. Get a couple of the biggest ones for your splants. This should promote growth but I would go the extra mile It is worth it for some metal hailides MH's

I wouldnt feed the plants until it gets a little bigger. The cfls do promote growth but they are not as good as a Mh bulb. Give em time. Theyll grow and one watering for a small plant should last at least a week. Dont water until soil is dry.
