Thanks,it's sad,and follows our industrial decline in general, I believe we should contract some Navy ship builds to S Korea and Japan at this point. They are solid allies and would probably accept eagerly w/their economies tired. I'd bet they could build 2 Frigates apiece for our Navy which needed them YESTERDAY. Meanwhile WE should have gotten the DDX next gen 13K ton destroyer going 5 yrs to a DECADE ago, we are sending the venerable "Tico's" to sea at 30+ yrs. old and the Chinese type 55 (11 commissioned in like 5 yrs. w/5 more coming) looks pretty formidable. China is also building a 110-120K ton Nuclear carrier and in the 2030's will have gen5 and 6 aircraft onboard and possibly 3-4 of these carriers, rumor has it they may be escorted by 20K ton nuclear powered cruisers bristling w/a kitchen sink of armament.Sal from What's going on with Shipping was talking about what led to the US losing all it's shipyards. In 1980 we changed how we gave tax breaks for ship building. Up till then the shipyard and the buyer of the ship split the tax breaks. But we passed a law where the shipyard got all the breaks because in order for the owner to get any he had to have a set schedule. And shippers have to be able to go where they need to or they can't make a living. So the only ships built from then on were for the Navy and Coast Guard. (with the exception of all tankers having to be replaced after they required them to be double hulled after Exon Valdese) So from 1980 to 2000 Japan and South Korea built the bulk of the worlds ships. No huge deal since they are both allies. But now China has taken over as the number one ship builder. And it's not even Navy ships that is the problem, it's that the world moves with shipping, and we are not even in the game anymore.
I think many Americans are unaware due to our political situation and our ingrained thinking that WE are Top Dog always that things have been trending down concerning our navy and generally dismiss the Chinese out of hand as copycats, build junk etc. Times have changed, they are an innovative people and have built a impressive navy in a mere 15 yrs. I hope problems concerning Taiwan are settled without conflict, I don't think we are prepared psychologically for what may be a shocking result should China make a move.
