I double filter. I grow in tents, but I think the theory would hold up in other spaces as well.
I have a 4" carbon filter inside the tent before the 4" inline fan, a 4" to 6" duct adapter, then a 6" carbon filter at the end of the ducting run where it's released into the environment. Zero odor except carbon smell.
I always get a filter rated for more than what a fan can do, it gives the air a better chance to be cleaned.
I think I read before about negative ion generators affecting plants somehow, not really sure. I guess that would only matter if your intake was recirculating the treated air.
You absolutely need negative pressure, air being pulled out a little faster than it can come into the space.
