Hungary opposes Rutte's Nato candidacy, foreign minister says
The Hungarian foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, said today in a press conference that his country would not support Mark Rutte, the outgoing Dutch prime minister, as Nato’s next secretary-general. [...] The Netherlands has over the past years been among the EU countries most vocal about concerns regarding democratic backsliding in Hungary.
In 2020, Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, quipped: “I don’t know what is the personal reason for the Dutch prime minister to hate me or Hungary.” And in a particularly tense summit in 2021, when tensions rose among leaders over a Hungarian anti-LGBT law, Rutte said Hungary must respect fundamental rights or leave. “My goal is to bring Hungary to its knees on this issue,” he said at the time.
Today, the Hungarian foreign minister appeared to refer back to these comments. “We certainly can’t support the election of a person to the position of NATO’s secretary general, who previously wanted to force Hungary on its knees,” Szijjártó said.
I was just listening to some pundit saying he didn't know what Orban wanted this time, and that he won nothing from delaying Sweden's membership. For Orban, the ability to obstruct IS the win. Makes him 'look' good nationally, in the eyes of even further and more eurosceptic far-right to which he risks losing voters. Hungary is not just sovereign, may have lost much of the land, but still matters!
Rutte explaining Orban the on the knees thing was just a gay joke to mock his homophobia...

Yeah me too. And that's completely unrelated to the fact it's about Rutte in this case. I don't see Hungary coming up with a better alternative. But, in these times, whether it's NATO or EU, there's no time to waste. He wasted the time of the Sweden, the entire EU, Ukraine, and now the civilized world. Stoltenberg's term ends later this year, NATO wants to replace him so the new guy/woman is already in place for if/when the situation escalates further.

The honest answer is 'not'. Per citizen sure, of course, but effectively in these matters, no, of course not. That's the EU goal of expanding the EU eastward, to make them equals, to lift them to our level after being held back by soviet union (and themselves...). Personally I would not at all oppose someone from east Europe getting the position, IF qualified, I don't know that many potential candidates that well. I do need to see far better arguments than this:

It's true, we prefer to spend money on things like healthcare, education, and climate... or on making east Europe equals while improving their air quality. Estonia gets more from EU than they spend on military... paid for by NL, Germany and France, per capita in that order.
GDP NL: over 1 trillion, 1.96% to defense. GDP Estonia: over 38billion 2.09% to defense
Aside from the fact we're one of the largest sponsors of Ukraine... who are fighting the enemy posing a threat to Estonia. And Rutte being a major force in EU pushing others to do more.
Suggesting that difference in % implies any measurement of or even a low 'moral credibility' of 'this guy' Rutte, and the idea that some kindergarten level idea of "it's our turn now" weighs heavily in these matters is exactly the things why people in the west would be reluctant with some east european president. The tone, the poor argument, the misuse of moral judgement, untactful, unprofessional. Exactly why even though Rutte's politics aren't mine anymore, I'd much prefer him cause he's the extreme opposite of that.
Yeah,Orban is a min-Trump,what's w/this phenomenon of these blustering BS artists of zero fkn. substance,whose policies are a mirage,that rile up their political base like a quasi morphing of a ranting evangelical snake oil salesman while producing ???, being accepted as real politicians,they're posers/entertainers and this ain't a FKN game. Your feelings on EU countries who take more than give yet bitch is equivalent to my feelings in the US about some states whose Reps/Senators grandstand and piss and moan when their state is a virtual welfare case in terms of their tax contribution vs. their share of fed. $$$.

Talk about twisting the nuts of the populace. Have to start hauling a buddy around with a 550+ to use his credit card at the charger to fill up the f'n car.
We have credit scores that can cost you more for credit or deny you credit but as long as you have enough cash you can keep your car going, get a passport etc. Even if you're an a-hole in general and post complaints about your gov't and crap like that it won't affect your credit score.
I kinda wish my credit score was still lousy. Been beating the hell out of the old visa card and now it's costing but at least I can cover it so I'm not beating the hell out of my credit score too. Some of the great deals I've been finding aren't so great once you figure what they are really going to cost in the end.

I am surprised it took this long before one got hit. One out of 37, considering they might be target #1 for the Russians. Heck, an Abrams was hit before it, and there are not as many of them. Just because they are quick to deploy and run does not make them invincible. With the Russian drones in the air one is bound to keep up to one and then see where it goes next. Think they need shells more than a replacement though.

I am impressed with their downing a dozen planes in as many days. The fact that Russia isn’t pressing air operations suggests they have supply issues of their own.
President Biden might need to find a way to get the goods to Ukraine, and to Hell with Congress. Afaik he holds an option in the EDA (excess defense articles) act, which gives him a legal pathway to send Ukraine a veritable Santa’s sleigh of war matériel.
I hope the Executive branch gives Putin’s pet legislators a swift pain.
