On a lighter note... (sorry...it's life here)

In the "you learn something new everyday" Dept. (hopefully...LOL) Sitting here just now...I see movement out of the corner of my eye...cruising down the creek bank. Wow.

Always thought this was a ferret...but never took the time to actually know what it is. Evidently it's an ermine...a relative to the weasel... and it changes from grey/brown in Summer to White in Winter. I've seen these in my years in Vail on the ski slopes...but again...never investigated further to know what it was.

We have lots of them here. Escaped from fur farms and naturalized in the wild.

i won't show this to my chickens. LOL
one of my farmer friends had 65 chickens killed in ONE NIGHT by a weasel. got into his barn where he kept the girls and took every last one of them out. zach said it was a complete bloodbath, and none of them were really even eaten. the weasel was just killing for sport and out of instinct. of all the animals that i worry about, a weasel is the only one that i actually fear.

...but man, he's so cuuuuute! i just wanna put him in my shirt pocket and feed him cheerios out of my hand.

They are cool to watch for a minute. We get a lot of fishers around by me.

I knew they were in the higher elevations. We'd see them at work/skiing on the hill in Vail. (same thing for years there...LOL) Hadn't seen one here in S. CO though. Seen most everything else...LOL. We have the mountain critters and the desert critters as well here. Bear/Lions/Elk/deer/rattlers/scorpions tarantulas/lizards. It's a zoo/jungle out there. :D Thought the cat was staying inside because of the cold...but maybe not.

Lore in the 'hood is that there was once a fur breeder on our road back in the 40's/etc. Fox, Mink/etc. Saw mink last year for the first time as well. All of em seem to like the creek/Riparian zone....as do most of the critters here. My property touches BLM land and there's USFS above that..and Wilderness Area above that... so we are in their hood...not the other way around...

Thought about the girls when I saw it. We have 6 chickens. They are in a stick-framed shed @ night but anything can happen. We've heard some stories here re lions/bears/etc. but have been fortunate so far.

Liddle f'er won't be around long if he does that shit though. I leave everyone alone til you intrude...then Mr. Sig Sauer will find you.

All the mink on my golf course have their dens in the rocks lining a creek. I assume they are deadly to the frog population. No wilderness here, just soy and corn all the way to the horizon.
