I put the caged plates on the bottom. The weight of the jack puts a little preload on the springs and stays in place nicely. I've also used the 12 ton for other metalwork. It's nice it will do the job no problem. Not as big but still big and takes up a lot of room.

Your surface area is the bag size not the plate size.
