War

That is a long way for a cardboard drone, Pskov is over 650km away from Ukraine, unless they converted a few to run on petrol. Most likely they used larger petrol driven drones to reach out and touch this place. Hitting it with cardboard drones from Ukraine would make more than the Russians shit! Every airforce on the planet would be thinking, it would be a major military technological feat.

Zelenskyy would paraphrase Churchill, never in the field of air warfare was so much destroyed by so little or so cheaply!

It was worth a HIMARS, like I said, how much of this shit does Russia have, 500 AA missile systems already lost and most countries don't have nearly as many such systems. One can see why they were once considered a major conventional threat to Europe just from the shear bulk of the equipment they have or had. Most of this shit is now irreplaceable with sanctions and their economy in the tank, once most of it is gone, it is gone for good. They are even running out of small arms and if they didn't buy uniforms, helmets, body armor and equipment from China, they would have none to supply the mobiks with. Defeating Russia while destroying their military equipment is the only long-term security, leave Putin with nothing to threaten anybody with and defeat them on the field.

about a pound

(edit) I recall Suchomimus saying (in his correction) four to five. The drones are probably featherweight, with low wingloading, and can pack much payload.
The reports out of Ukraine, you posted one. I thought it was 4Kg, this guy says so. Encrypted military grade GPS would do it and I think the Europeans have a separate GPS system too, the Russians use GPS jamming and lately it doesn't appear effective even in Moscow. The circle of error probability is a lot less than a meter with this enhanced GPS system.

It's the electronics that make them effective and accurate, the cardboard makes them cheap and stealthy. It looks to me like they are mass attacking airfields with them to me. If you have an advantage like this, it would be best to spring it all at once, before they can react.

I saw a picture of the drone and it looked smaller.

But this shows the size better, pretty fucking big.

"The SYPAQ drone has a maximum payload capacity of 5kg and can stay in the air for 1 to 3 hours depending on payload weight. The drone’s maximum advertised range is 120 kilometers".

Would probably not be a cardboard plane, the engine vibration would hammer it pretty good. To go that distance a few extra bucks to make it survivable would be worth it (rigid foam wrapped in packing tape). You do not want to waste an opportunity if you are travelling that far.

At Least Two, Maybe Four, IL-76 Transport Aircraft Destroyed in Drone Attack at Pskov Airbase!

Considering they might have destroyed 4 transport aircraft and the fuel depot, it would be worth sending something a bit better than a cardboard drone, any drone is pretty cheap compared to the target. Those cardboard designs are fascinating though, people have been building RC planes from cardboard and a variety of modern materials. Any factory that punched out cartons could make thousands of them a day and even high school kids and volunteers could assemble them with mostly hot glue guns. It doesn't get any cheaper with taped hinges and cheap parts from China, I've bought several of the propulsion systems with a 7" prop, motor and an esc with a battery connector for around $20 each and they would be much cheaper in bulk. They could swarm a target and 4kg of HE can kill parked planes and helicopters with proper GPS access, the GPS hardware can be commercial, but the encrypted access is the key.

Tell me these people aren't freaking out and going nuts, they are doing it for a reason. Many Russian baby boomers in the elites have fond memories of the old Soviet Union, Vlad is not alone in pining for the imperial past. The propagandists have been freaking out for a while now and Russia recently ramped up its cyberwarfare. They are losing and near the breaking point in some places I figure, and the Ukrainians are breaking through their lines, though at great cost, their casualties have been higher while attacking the toughest part. They have been putting the heat on Russia in several places and making methodical progress in the south, their main thrust of attack.

Many in Russia's elite fear what is coming in Ukraine and a collapse of their front.

It seems those drones are made from foam core board, the same stuff ya buy at the dollar store and a common material used to build RC planes. It costs about the same as cardboard and can be punched out in large numbers by the same equipment used to make cartons or it can be laser cut.

How do they make the curved leading edge?

(edit) from the close-up earlier this page, maybe from several skew-cut (beveled?) strips of the flat board

A great reason to punch holes in the ground in Ukraine and start building the pipelines from Europe to it now, cut Russia out and send the money to Ukraine and get security as a bonus. Russia is fighting for its life in Ukraine and their air defenses are getting pretty good, it's getting less risky every day. If Europe phased out domestic use of NG and just used it for industrial and emergency energy purposes, it would last a long time, long enough to transition away from fossil fuels completely, though it might be needed as a chemical feedstock.
