New white pistils in late flower

I realize that at different phases of late flower the plant will throw several rounds of new white pistols in an attempt to pollinate itself as a last-ditch effort. I'm just curious if most people pay attention to this and wait for that to completely stop and curl in or do you just go by trichomes and never mind the new white pistols

It happens a lot more in the summer when temps are higher. Don't worry about a few new white hairs when determining ripeness. Also, I've never seen someone harvest a bud too late, wheras 90%+ of new and intermediate growers harvest too early. I even know some guys who grow spectacular plants who started harvesting too early 30 years ago and just continued doing the same thing every harvest since. If you are coming up on a harvest, post a few good pics here, close up and whole plant and then see what some of us think here. And the advice to "wait another week when you think they're ready" is good advice. Actually, waiting two more weeks when you think they're ready is even better for new growers. The biggest thing homegrowers have going for us over commercial operations is that we can actually harvest our buds when they are ripe. That's the main reason why good homegrown bud blows people away who haven't had it before. Dispensaries sell immature bud with extremely dubious THC "tests" showing inflated %s. Sorry, went off on a tangent there. Here is one of my favorite little write-ups on signs of maturity beyond just scoping trichomes for some arbitrary % of amber:

Hi all,

Anyone care to chime in on these, week 8, all trichomes cloudy at this stage.

Just a little thrown off due to the amount of new pistols on some of the buds.

Cheers

They’ll through pistols till they start they’re final swelling which is weeks 8-10 then all your pistols will start to pull in and it’ll do some foxtailing and you’ll notice they look a lot darker some plants run 14 weeks I wouldn’t even look to pull them till weeks eleven or twelve at the earliest

I have to agree that those the plant needs a couple more weeks….2-3 at least, possibly even a bit longer depending.
Those white pistils are not the “last ditch effort”, random or heat related superfluous ones that can really be ignored. To me, those look like the wave that comes as the buds go into their swell and really gain some heft.
Ive seen buds hold cloudy trichs for weeks before going amber….in some cases never amber at all.
Your buds should swell up as those pistils turn and recede. Then you’ll be in a good window where it’s more about preference.
Nice looking grow…..good luck and patience is your friend right now.

Thanks Bullmark,

After reading this I now think I've probably never let them go as long as they should.

I've never seen them swell like this and I got scared thinking that the swollen calyx were seeds.

My future grows will be better due to your input.

Thanks again :weed:

I also think I would wait a week or 2. I am indoors under LEDs. My last grow was super lemon haze and I chopped it in the middle of week 11. I had some bud rot and a few top buds looked like the 1st pic below. So I could have chopped it a week earlier and got the same quality of smoke. I say this cause I cut buds at different times of flower and smoked them later...............

Some buds got dark brown from dead stigmas (white hairs) and dark leaves. I think the plants got low on nutes also since I flushed em.............. if you flush then I dont think you should do it longer than a couple weeks depending on your soil..........

I have gone to long to harvest on one strain a couple years ago. The buds turn brown and I dont like that................. Ambers start to show up and come on quick in the space of a week or 10 days depending on the strain. So if all ambers are cloudy , I dont think you can beat that for quality and it gives a heady high. If you wait and wait until you get 10 or 20% ambers that can bee too much (depending on strain) and you get the more physical couch lock thing going, even with Sativas.

Point being-- it is really a judgement call since there is a window of maybe 2 weeks on certain Sativas. Indicas may not be so much that way. But after all trichs are cloudy, I could not tell the diff whether I chopped in the early part of the 10th week or the middle of the 11th week on the same strain in the 2nd grow............

The diff was in quantity and size of fat buds. After the 11th week buds got so big (like in the 1st pic) that they got hit with the bud rot and I lost the best ones............ lack of ventilation and air flow played a roll. Top buds were more mature than lower buds.

Its a hard one to call if one is not familiar with your grow, but I agree that trichs are where the action is.....and too many ambers and dark heads lower your THCa levels if you wait too long. They can come on fairly quick after a long spell of cloudy only with few clears......... I am considering cutting those top buds first if it happens again.

for what its worth

yo
