Is this rot?

Ya, the stem probably rotted down below it. Looks like Botrytis to me, the way it died off. Even a dead bug could have infected it and caused the mold.

Then again, I've had single buds randomly die off like that before, and was just a fluke. Sometimes a branch can get damaged or nicked, and only rot in that area.

I've also had bud rot spread like crazy, and start taking out buds left and right, many just below the buds, and they die off just like your pic. Even though there is no mold in the bud itself. Also, the buds can be molded up, but still look nice and green.

Root rot causes whole plants to shrivel up like that. Branch by branch.

It looks suspect - I would snip it and look for the mold. And do it so as not to spread any spores that might be next to the stem or in the stem and at the base of any leaves that go into the bud...........

It is odd- the rot I have seen was obvious but this may be at an early stage. It may be into the stem and vascular system so everything above where it started can be infected...................

Root rot would be from overwatering most likely. But something is up with that one bud.............

With mold there should be the white fluffy stuff at the early stage, then it turns grayish when spores come on.................... very curious

Yes sir- it bears looking into. In that later stage of flower in big buds the rot can come on quick , in the space of just a couple of days before symptoms start. But the color of that bud and the lack of white hyphae (mycelium) showing puzzles me........... so I cant say mold for certain.

if it is bud rot, it will start at the stem or base of a dead leaf and then work its way out................. Ive not seen that exact symptom before............... the way it shows in that one bud.

I am real curious as to what it turns out to be

I just had my first case of bud rot. A really nice top bud, too, BUT, as best i can tell it was isolated to just this spot.

I inspected the entire plant as best i could, found no other "discoloration" or signs of rot, so i cut away the top and the rest of the plant is finishing up. Week 8.5. My environment is really clean and I have good airflow with not-too-high RH so I'm unsure exactly how it happened, but it did and I dealt with it. Best of luck man, shit happens BUT it's all in how we handle it, that matters.

Yup ur right. I snipped that bud and it was rotted inside. Fuck! Should I chop this grow?
No sir! Do not panic. Especially if you have caught it early and you dont see this white fluff yet or freakin spores in a gray powder form............. That bud above looks familiar. the bud closes up and inside it gets wet. its best to open it up anyway maybe. but if that is all you see then that is all the damage (so far). Ventilation, air flow and low humidity help........... but those big, fat buds are the ones that get hit first............dead leaves going into the heart of the bud

You need to look it over close though..........it happens quick.

I had it in my last 2 grows and I still saved over 90% of my yield but mine hit just before the chop anyway.....

Same here. Thanks!

Best thing you can really do is crank a dehumidifier to full blast, and hope it doesn't spread more. You'll probably have other buds die off like that too, because they are already infected. . The mold itself should stop spreading around though. 1 moldy bud usually means there is more, but you might be lucky and it was just a dead spider\moth that crawled in there and died.. Especially if you've kept the environment in check.

That plant was pretty close to finishing and I had two other plants in that tent with huge buds, so I chopped it... cut off that entire branch that had the rot in it. The other buds looked okay, so I hung them with a fan blowing, hopefully they won't spoil... the other two plants I'll watch closely, but I'm inclined to harvest sooner rather than later

That is what I did under the circumstances. I also saw something interesting or at least it caught my attention:

When the dead spot at the stem under the bud starts producing the fungal roots (mycelium) , the plant responds with more resin glands (trichomes) that quickly turn dark in the heads. This resin engulfs the mycelium in spots and stops its spread or at least slows it down.

These infected buds (or at least some of them) got "gooey" with resin and turned brown when dried in isolation ............but they had about 50% amber and dark trichs.............. I tossed most of them.

But I never saw this buttrot like this - before I started stretching out my chop date and producing these large, fat buds.................. It may be a tradeoff. However, I now want to put an end to it one way or the other..... I dont want it in every freakin grow

I thought some buds were finishing early before I caught the rot. That makes sense.
