Seed germination question

On average, how long do seeds take to germinate? I soaked my seeds in distilled water for 24 hours, and them put them directly in soil. It’s been a week and 2 out of 10 have come up so far. What do you think, about 2 weeks is average?

Check out Root Riot cubes. Almost foolproof. Then transplant the cube with your seedling. There’s no telling how deep the seeds are that haven’t shown.

2 out of 10 is horrible. Something isnt right . Were these old seeds or new? When you took the, imo unnecessary step of soaking did they sink right away? Are you keeping media moist? Id be pissed with that ratio in every situation except old ass beans

Yea 2 outta 10 is on you not the seeds. You should soak till they sink, then hatch in a towel till you have a tail, then tail down in a cube or soil a ¼ inch deep. 99.9 success. I would assume you drowned them or gave them a charge and it killed them

I have some older seeds, I just hatched a nl x afghan from Mr nice, these are like 10 years stored by me. The bean took longer to hatch than I expected, like a whole extra 24 hrs in a towel but he/she is going strong (dunno the sex yet)

These were soaked in tap water at about 75 degrees in the dark for 24 hours. I expect them to "split open" and show their tails by 48 hours. Or I get worried

I then put them tail down in less than 1/4 inch of soil over the top...................... these all split open. 8 of the 10 seeds popped up above the surface and established. I then buried these up to the cotyledons in my potting soil.

Just one way to do it.

Yours should have certainly germinated withiin a week.....

best regards

Sorry to post so many times, i just wanted to say I advocate for the paper towel hatch mainly because it works, but also if you have a seed that's gonna mold or have a issue you will see that shit stain the towel right away. I had 3 purple punch freebies and they all molded in the towel, all hatched at separate times.

24 hour soak was probably too long. Try 12 hours soak, plant seed 1//4 to 1/2 deep pointy end down. Keep soil around the seed moist but not sopping wet, a baggie over the cup should hold enough moisture till they sprout. Should see a sprout in 3 or 4 days, a week max. I used to use the paper towel method, this works just as well and the sprouts seem to be a little more robust.

Seriously, they float, when u swirl the water and they sink, id get them out in the next few hrs or be scared or drowing them

Solo cups filled with coco coir has never let me down. Baggie domes til they pop. Seeds, without pre soaking, always pop for me in 3 to 5 days. One time, it took 10 whole days. Ideally they should pop within a week, especially if pre soaked.

Thanks for all the replies. I read about the 24 hour soak on here. The seeds were lightly buried after I soaked them and then planted in Fox Farms Ocean Forest Potting soil.
I purchased the seeds from Doc Dank Seeds, and he has a pretty good reputation. I don’t know how old the seeds are because the package didn’t have a date on it.

Lots of people soak, lots don’t. It works either way use what your comfortable with but regardless of wich method you used, thats a terrible ratio. You either did something crazy which it seems like you didn’t or those seeds were bunk to start. Only thing i can think of besides that is you drowned them, unlikely in24 hrs imo, you buried them 4inches deep, doubtful, you let them dry out after they germed , possible or cold medium which is possible other than that those seeds were junk from start the imo

I‘m thinking about emailing him and asking him to send me 8 seeds without charging me. Marijuana seeds are very expensive. To me $45 for 10 seeds is a lot of money, and I know that’s considered a good price. I’m not new to starting seeds as far as vegetables, most of them you can soak for 24 hrs with no problem. Pot is a whole new new ball game for me. So if I get ahold of some more seeds then I won’t soak them, and try the cubes.

Here are a few of my pepper plants I started from seed.

See where you went wrong is you went by time for the soak. It's just suggested 24 hours till they sink. I have had some sink in less than 5 hours, so if they were in there for 24 hours? They probably drowned. You can tap the seeds with your finger and if they sink to the bottom, they are ready to put into your medium or a paper towel.

I would at least go look at the seeds that didn't sprout, carefully sift through with your fingers and see if they grew a tap and are white little dead things or if they just never cracked open at all you drowned them. If they were little white things with a tap, its not all on you, they were weak
