we don't do much business with them, and most of that is for raw iron and machinery...

they are strategically placed, but that's of very little benefit to the U.S., NATO has bases nearly as close, already in operation.
as i can see it, the only benefit to us at all is putin shooting himself in the foot...a few times now, the invasion itself, lying to his own troops, badly underestimating the Ukrainians resolve, underestimating the strength of the sanctions that would be brought against him, the world wide abhorrence of his actions...he is destabilizing his own fascist regime.

After ww2 there were several things done to prevent wars between nation states including the UN another thing was free trade and a global economic system that encouraged trade, trade is good and makes everybody richer. Growing business ties and economic dependency prevent war and that was the idea of an integrated global community of nations with some rules or guides and lot's of international financial institutions to insure stability. China and America are mutually dependent for many things and this tends to prevent conflict, we all like our smartphones and China needs Taiwanese Chips to make things work, so does Russia.

Vlad is suffering the consequences of violating those international rules with catastrophic results for the Russian economy. Because of the nature of communism, they were not really part of the western, now global economic world until recently. So their international dependency is not as great as most countries and they have many internal resources. However being cut off from the world economically and technologically will have dire effects on the Russian economy and on Russians themselves. Even if Vlad ate a bullet in a month, the damage has been done and their money will never be returned, what is frozen will be seized and used as compensation for rebuilding Ukraine and to compensate Ukrainian refugees and victims when this shit is over. Vlad fucked mother Russia more than any enemy pillaging the land could and for that he will probably die at the hands of his own people.

Winds usually go from west to east and I'm sure they shift around a lot so that everybody will get a good dose including Russia which is their closest neighbor and not that far from the border. They know all about nuclear power plant disasters in that part of the world and Russia would get hit too.

From the weather data, the Russians would be poisoning themselves, the wind from the north would drop fallout all over their troops and Crimea. Also any serious incident would mean Russia would get it too, so I figure someone was told to get a fucking brain and back off the attack. It's loss of cooling that is the biggest hazard not so much a breech of containment, but if a core melts down there will be a breech of containment. If they lose grid power and the diesel back ups are destroyed.

I would think journalists would be a bit more informed about any nuclear plant facility , but most wonder if they can withstand direct military attack.

They were never designed for it . Steel, concrete and lead are designed for scattering and absorption of atomic reactions , not rockets and bombs.

They were designed to encapsulate the reaction chamber / core , cooling , fuel rods , steam generators , pumps and turbines. So, it doesn’t take much to cripple the safety / backup systems if under bombardment. Destroy the structure or the controls that monitor the nuclear reactions , you risk those systems being damaged beyond use . Superheated mass will melt downward as with the corium “ elephants foot “ at Chernobyl.

Destroy its cooling capability and core mass / fuel will superheat and go into meltdown.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the reason this particular propaganda is effective is because there is some truth in it. They do have nazi militias, of which some expressed the desire for the type of country the US would want to attack, they did attack lgbt protests, crazy ukrainians attacking gay bars is a thing (majority considers homosexuality as not acceptable), they are quite racist and xenophobic. Making monkey sounds in stadiums towards black players, beating up tourist poc. In 2012 in Lviv 10% of the votes went to an ultraright fascist party (Svoboda). Authorities are known to look away. So why do I not question this is just Russian propaganda? For similar reason we don’t question Mexico has a problem with drug cartels. Way too many people, including Ukrainians who moved west, media and politicians would have to be lying. As Fogdog said a few days ago, it’s not Denmark. It sure ain’t.

Basically despite their good looks they are a little backward in east europe. Not as in retarded, but travelling east means in some ways travelling back in time. That applies to anything from haircuts to views on jews, lgbt, colored people. The more rural areas are worst, as is the case in western countries.

I do not know how the country changed since they voted for Zelensky. Ukraine wasn’t a concern of mine for 6 years and I would have liked to keep it that way. But if most of them were nazis, they wouldn’t have voted for a jewish guy. The conclusion of this article sums it up nicely: “The far right is a problem in Ukraine, but the country is far from a Nazi state.”

He may just succeed with some denazification though, because however this war ends, the “normal” majority of Ukrainians and authorities will likely be less tolerant towards what Putin labelled them during the war.
