Why do people use Autoflowers after their 1st grow?

I grow autos and photos. Depends on my changing mood. Lately growing them in the same room, but photos in the flower tent and autos on 24/0 in an open closet in said room.

I grow autos because I was always getting free auto beans and threw them away. One time I tossed a Trainwreck auto in with the photos in flower on 12/12 and it kicked ass, frosty af. But tiny, like 12 inches tall, lol.
So I tried autos on 18/6 and they got bigger. Then on 20/4 and they got even bigger. Now trying 24/0 for the first time and they seem to be getting even bigger.

Right now I am growing a Mephisto Double Grape (a strain I've grown a few times) and an Ace seeds Malawi x NL. The Mephisto Double Grape loves the schedule, the Ace seeds Malawi x NL is doing well but seems like it would be better at 20/4.

Not a new grower at all. My first grow was 85/86....end of year grow. I remember because I was still flowering when the space shuttle Challenger blew up.

Autos have come a long way since the experimental ones of 20 years ago or more.

My first grow was a Lowryder, a White Dwarf, and a Red Dwarf. True to their names they were maybe 1 1/2 feet tall and yielded about an oz or a bit more each. I was ecstatic. LOL. I did it because they were a pretty new thing then and it seemed fast and easy. And small. I was growing in s cabinet then so small was my goal. I didn't realize how small lol. I know now autos are no faster but I was in a real hurry back then and the marketing said they were fast. Some of those pics of auto plants in this thread are NICE!

In my experience, I get the same quantity and quality as growing photoperiod plants. So to be able to grow plants at different stages in the same space is a modern miracle. Here's my previous room which was an old laundry off the kitchen alway open, and now I can grow three plants in different stages, in a frikken walk in wardrobe that is also open all the time. there is no ventilation or exhaust in the walk in wardrobe I rely on the door open and a fan. Try doing that with photoperiods.

From what I can tell...most posters on here are home grower novices (like me) who have are halfway handy at growing good pot. What i am finding is...a lot of what I read on here only really applies if you are a commercial grower. And the people who are the most zealous about it all...usually have a 4x4 tent in a spare room, and not a decked out commercial facility....and a handful of grows under their belts. A lot of these self-appointed experts would be better off keeping it simple...or applying the KISS principle...Keep It Simple Stupid. I see so many scorched plants, or plants that had leaves removed because some idiot told them to....and they look like sh*t...and it's all due to bad advice from people who mis-apply commercial growing practices...by thinking you can seamlessly apply those techniques to growing in a 4x4 tent with a $200 LED. Everyday, there's someone on here looking for help, usually because of bad advice they read on these pages in the first place....and then people tell them to double down with bottle nutes without ever asking about the environment. Whether you grow auto or photo...if you know what you're doing, you're going to get good bud. And if you had bad experiences with autos...it's probably due to your own lack of knowledge and humility.

When I add my costs and time...as a novice...autos yield more quality bud in a faster time-frame. (YMMV). I only need 8 oz per grow. I give it to family members, and I make canna-choc for the missus. Usually mephisto. Everyone loves it. I don't need (or want) a huge harvest. I'm not a commercial grower, so 8 oz of quality 3 Bears OG is all I need. There isn't a photo that I am aware of that can do all of this in 80 days. I like to travel, so ending the grow and jarring everything in a reasonable time frame is important for me.

For a novice home grower...like the overwhelming majority here...autos are a no brainer.

104 days is unusually long for an auto. I grow under Timber Lights 400 Watt VERO 29 and a pair of Platinum P300. It's a 3' x 8' space and is climate controlled. I've grown dozens of autos and never gone past 80 days from sprout. I chop when hairs are 80% brown and trichs are 15% amber.

Give it one more try Frank...but try this instead. Sprout a 3BOG seed in a 3 gallon grow bag of FFOF. Just give it tap water and see what happens. No nutes, no defol, no playing with it at all

Chop at 11 weeks. Trust me on this..

I'm going longer. I'm not chopping at 20% pistils white. Last time it was closer to 95% or more pistils brown and pulled back into the calyx.

Awesome post. I agree there are people on here that are pros and those that think they are. I am a total Hobbyist, I like fucking around with plants. I honestly don't care if my grows give 20oz of the best weed ever or it fails completely. I don't smoke much and I have weed stored up from last summer still.

I gave Autos a go indoors a couple of years back, they were a disaster, the grow was a comedy of errors from end to end. I only tried them because RQS sent me a 5 pack for free. Last summer RQS sent me another free 5 pack and I grew them outdoors, it was minimal effort, some tomato feed once a week, I got 10oz of superb weed for free. Just some cheap tomato feed and they soil from a couple of cheap tomato grow bags.

Since my last attempt at Autos indoors I have upgraded my pot size, my lights, my tent and my ventilation. I have also learned so much more. I figure if I can pull 10oz out of 5 plants I should be able to pull 20oz out of 10. I don't smoke 20oz a year. Whilst I am not rich, I am not poor either so I have setup 2 grow tents, a mirror image of each other. My plan was to have two grows running a month apart, so I can harvest every 4 weeks (ish) instead of 8 weeks (ish).

But now I have thought about it I am going to try both tents side by side, each with 5 Autos in. I figure that in 80 (ish) days that will be my whole growing season done. 20oz from 10 Autos is not really a big or unrealistic goal. I have 5 RQS Northern Lights (freebies) and 5 Black Valium from Top Shelf Elite, that I bought the other day. So I will see how it goes, as far as I can see it is the most efficient way of doing it. Maybe it it will fail, but at least I will have fun trying. I have a couple of single Auto freebies and I have bought the bits to make a couple of SIPs, so I might stick them in the polytunnel with the wife's Tomato and Courgette plants, just for shits and giggles.

I have lots of other hobbies. I like motor racing, I like to spend my summer going to drag racing events. I am restoring a 1990 VW T3 Campervan (a Vanagon in North America and a Type 25 in the UK). I am stripping it to a bare shell, repairing any rust, rebuilding the running gear and respraying it. Once that is done I am refitting the camping bit to a modern specification, lifting the suspension to turn it into an overlander. It will be capable of being off grid for days at a time. My kids are nearly grown and I want to spend my time away camping in the wilderness and not having to pop home every few days to check on a bunch of plants. If I can get it done over winter, leaving my summer's free, that would be just fine.

I'm curing one of three Auto's (2.7 Oz) right now. Another is currently drying and one is still going. I just gave an Oz from last years grow to some of my daughter's friends because I have way too much for my own use. That was 1 jar. Still have 5 left with 3 new ones curing from this year. I'm going to have 10 Oz to last me a year. Be lucky to get through a "zip". Never mind 10. pfffft. It's a fun plant to grow.
