Leaves hooking upward.

I have one plant in my room that seems to be having an issue with leaves hooking upward. It just became pronounced over the last few days. I had a small issue with nutrient burn early on that I believe I corrected. I’m currently in 3 days in on Week 7.

I adjusted my PPM down to 900-1100 (from 1250) with AN jungle juice (micro/grow/bloom), AN cal/mag, and AN overdrive, I’m PH’d at 5.6-5.8 with water at 65-67 degrees. I’m growing in Coco with perlite in 5 gal. cloth pots. Humidity is between 42-47% temp is a at 71-73 degrees lights on and a consistent 66 degrees lights off.

Could this be an issue with over watering? Or should I try dropping my ppm?

Magnesium Deficiency. This can be caused by excess phosphates which locks up the Mg, making it unavailable to the plant. Phosphates take a while to flush out.

I’m using 20ml of cal mag to 5 gallons of water. Maybe I should bump it back to a full 25ml. I was trying to get my ppm down on my mix below 1200ppm, so I scaled all of my nutrients back. I’ll bring cal/mag back up and drop my bloom nutrients a bit to see if that helps.

You are overloaded with nitrogen from the Calmag is my suspicion
Hop off the Calmag train and see if it corrects
My 2c
I’m still using Grow nutrients (N) at 12ml for 5 gallons. Advanced Nutrients recommends using 25ml, but I only went with 50%. What if I keep the Cal/Mag to allow uptake of other nutrients in the and brick the Grow nutrients all together? That would eliminate the main source of nitrogen.

Calmag is a crutch when the feed schedule is off
They are your plants you can try anything
I’ve only been including it because was under the impression that Cal/Mag was needed for growing in Coco coir because the cation exchange sites lock onto the Ca and Mg making them unavailable to the plant. So in order for the plant to be able to uptake regular nutrients you have to add additional Cal/Mag to prevent nutrient lock out. Is this not the case?

The coco I purchased was initially buffered with cal/mag, but I read it will still need supplemental Cal/Mag.

Here is my thought albeit unsolicited on AN
Why did they create a system with so many additives when it’s been proven everything you need can be included ?

Sorry I ran Advance for a year and it felt like I was chasing my tail

if you need to keep on with the Calmag do it
But I would reup when I ran out as far as AN
I get wanting to grow the best possible
But like the saying goes “sometimes the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze “

I may have found the issue. I switched to Sensi Cal-Mag from Advanced Nutrients from the General Hydroponics Cali-Magic. Sensi Cal-Mag had an N of 4 where the GH was 1. I think I just need to eliminate adding any grow nutrients in my bloom phase altogether considering that it’s being picked up with the Sensi Cal-Mag.

That makes sense, I was using GH flora series and switched away because AN Jungle Juice is basically a knock-off of the base nutrients at 30% less cost.

I’ve had really good luck with GH and with AN in my Drain-to-waste system given my municipal water supply so I’ve stuck with it. It all just seems to work and gives me great yields.

I recently switched my Cal/Mag supplement and didn’t realize AN’s version feeds N at 4 whereas GH’s Calimagic feeds N at 1. I’m thinking you’re right that I’ve been giving them too much N, good eye! I’m going to cut the grow nutes completely and see if that helps stabilize things.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and help me troubleshoot. I really appreciate it.

General Hydro is by far less expensive as well and good catch on the N level thought I was gonna have to get physical with ya

If you are using AN 3-part ditch the Grow altogether. Use the Micros and Bloom per Lucas formula. 8 ml of Micros and 16 of Bloom per gallon. From now until chop. With calcium and magnesium in the Micros eliminate your cal mag.

Perfect, the grow is dunzo!

Reading the bottle and it looks like The Jungle Juice Micro has Calcium 5%, but no Magnesium in it. The Bloom has 1.5%. Think that’s enough to satisfy the need for the coco and prevent nutrient lockout?

Use magnesium foliar spray if you see deficiency. 1 tablespoon unscented epsom salts in a gallon of water. Add a drop of Dawn. Not in flower! If in flower same mixture but water in.

Magnesium and calcium are probably the main culprits in partial or total lockout. We see it from overuse of cal mag in my opinion and in personal experience helping others here in Alaska.

Got it! I’ve been playing it safe buying the bottle nutrients, but now that I’m a bit more comfortable growing and have my air system and humidity dialed in, I’m looking at alternatives to bottle nutrition. This is perfect info and timing. Thanks man!
