I did a similar exercise as this in the summer, but was pretty far north of $1K...but then I did 3x HLG lights, two AC-Infinity fans + controller, Wifi Therm/Hygr. etc.

I'm spending basically nothing these days. I reuse everything and pinch every single penny I can. The only thing I might buy is a couple bricks of coco and a $15 bag of dry nutrients which I'll use for both cannabis and vegetable starts. I have recycled soil in bags in the greenhouse that's been reamended waiting to put in pots for this years outdoor plants. I don't even need to buy any coco or nutrients as I already have enough but I like to replace what I use and not end up running out.

No plans on buying any equipment like lights, tents, meters, etc... I already have all of that and most is years old and still working just fine. My goal is to increase my bank account which I've been doing for years due to my obsession with saving and reusing anything I can.

Some may call me cheap but I consider myself financially smart.

Initial investment is always steep and there's always a bunch of inglorious bits and pieces you need to get up and running. Then it comes down as long as what you've bought the first round was well thought out and of good quality. This round I've only bought a few bales of ProMix and some Mykos, though I'm fixing to grab a few 'additives' and upgrade my pH tester. But then, if you figure out what your output across a couple grows is, you're at break even pretty quick.

I completely respect and understand that. I try to do the same I cut , save , definitely reuse what I can in some places and occasionally splurge in others. Come on xtsho you worked hard to save that loot and you can’t take it with you lol it doesn’t hurt to splurge once in a while I’m sure you deserve it. There is definitely a difference between wants and needs though

I went way over my initial budget to the point that I didn't even want add it up as I realized I needed this or that...but that's sometimes how the initial investment goes.

If it makes you feel better, i spent well over 2000€ for my first setup, but that is including the air-conditioning unit and installation, dehumidifier etc.
Also the equipment in my area is much more expensive, for example the 4x4 tent is around 150€, i think you found a bargain for only 50$

Also i made more than few rookie mistakes with some of my purchases, because of wrong planning, inexperience and not enough research. I was rushing with some things so i actually wasted some money for nothing. Probably couple of hundreds of euros that i could've saved. Not proud of it all and it hurts just when i think about it, but i try to sweep it under the rug because i can't do anything about it anymore, pointless to stress over it now. I'll just move on and continue, hopefully it pays off in the long term.

I really like that other comment: ''Some people buy expensive shoes and have kids'' :D That's how i make myself feel better and less guilty.

And i always compare the money spent on weed before growing. 15€ for 1 gram, 50€ for 5 grams.. Bad weed with chemicals or mold, long waiting time, a*shole dealers cutting the weight, a*shole dealers stealing money etc.. For me it's better to spend money on equipment that you may or may never use, than wasting money on a*shole dealers.

I was lucky enough do side-work for a bit in a world where stuff like weed was provided, so I didn't buy anything for years. But also, we all have our priorities. I don't really care about expensive shoes and can go years without buying any shoes. I also am perfectly happy with my 2008 Honda rather than have car payments, besides not someone who has any ego or image tied up in cars. No kids either, and we own our house outright, so no mortgage (though the taxes on the place are certainly as much as a mortgage might be in much of the US, but that's a different story). I don't have a boat or RV, I don't ski, hunt or own motorcycles/snowmobiles. I did have a side that took expensive gear...the last piece I bought for that was 3500$, though I have gear that's well in excess of that too.

This year I'll probably buy a blumat setup for when I'm away, so that will be a couple hundred bucks, and probably odds and ends, but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at.

Well said, for me personally I/we never shat higher than our hoop either except for our kid. As parents we sacrificed like most and went without alot we wanted to give our kid the best of just about everything, all the fancy clothes, electronics, everything they pointed at almost to a fault. For the most part they always deserved it and it wasnt just .handed to them. Had to be doing good and applying themselves . Im glad to say we got through it and raised someone who now works hard and is self sufficient even though they were spoiled, not a brat though. Now its time for mom and dad to enjoy some of our work and effort. Yup that means a couple new toys ,driving something wifey wants etc Of course we want to leave something but I aint leaving it all. And nothing feels better than knowing mine will survive without me
