As I browse threads on RIU, I noticed that there are a lot of creative folks here.
I see everyday things used in some of the most inventive ways, most of them saving many dollars, and lots of waiting time.
I wanted to start a thread just about scrounging and parts substitutions, here is my entry and example of what I am talking about.
Home Depot ebb and flow fittings.
I had everything I needed to build my ebb and flow table, but the fill and drain fittings.
Now there are many kits available on the market but some are expensive and all are far away in my case.
I went to my favorite place for inspiration, the hardware store. If I am working on a project I take anything that I am using to the store with me if I can, so that I have them to test fit and stuff before I buy it.
So I'm in the plumbing dept looking at fittings and what not, when I see a male thread to male 1 1/2" PVC slip adaptor. I found the female thread equivalent and they screwed right together. I used two pairs of this assembly to pass through my table clamping the liner to the table itself sealing tightly to the liner by tightening the female adapter on the male adapter which are on either side of the table.
For the overflow I used a sink drain to 1 1/2" PVC adapter. This allows me to precisely adjust the level of the flood by just raising or lowering the sink drain tube.
For the fill/drain fitting I just capped it and drilled holes in it. I have kind of a big pump on this system and when it started it would shoot straight up out of the fitting so I used a stainless bolt, a pen barrel and a pickle jar lid as a shield. If I were to make this again I simply would not drill the top holes.
