Are leds a lot cooler than hps?

Currently running 4x 600w digital hps but having problems with the heat in my room. I already have an intake from outside and a large outtake fan so have had to turn them all down as an attempt to lower the temp (currently 33 c).

what I am wondering is how much cooler would 4 led lights be let’s say something like the Mars hydro 2000’s and would this be a better all round setup? Would I need 4 2000’s or would 3 give an equal amount of light and par/ umols. Thanks

Here's the thing yes and no.

If you swapped out your 4 lights for 600W leds. The. The heat BTU would be identical. However. In an LeD room you want higher temperatures to compensate for lack of infrared. And the second thing is I find LED mostly keep all their heat at or above the fixture. So an extraction fan placed above the light will suck almost all the heat away no problem at all. With HPS lights much of the heat is beamed down in the form of IR. It's heating all the plants and surfaces in the grow room. So I found a fab wouldn't suck out all the heat as easily.

so ya LEDs are cooler in that it's easier to control the heat IMO.

the orher thing is you could swap those 4 lights out for 4X 400-480W quality LEDs. You will save heat, save watts and probably still have a little more yield.

From what i gathered is they run slightly cooler with the added benefit of being able to run your room at a warmer temp to keep your leaf surface temps up. I'm still learning myself tho so take what i say with a grain of salt

LED runs exponentially cooler than HPS lighting. I just yanked 2 1000w hps lamps, ballasts, and air cooled hoods out of my flower room. I replaced them with 2 660w LED qb's because I don't want my ac running non stop from lights on to lights off every day through summer. Not to mention a $250/month savings on electric while producing the same output per harvest. The 660's certainly give off some heat but to compare it to the heat output of a 600w or 1000w hps lamp is laughable. You could replace all 4 of those 600w HID's with 450w qb's and have better yields, minimal heat, and a lower electric bill. If you're going the amazon route for your qb's I would recommend spider farmer. Mars hydro is a little skeezy. Their lights aren't trash but there are suppliers with better equipment for the same amount of money.

Hell, you could put 4 660's in there and have less heat than 4 of those 600w HPS lamps and ballasts. HID for indoor cultivation is essentially obsolete at this point in the game. 5 years from now you won't find one in a grow shop. It's just antiquated technology anymore.

I see HPS and MH light like blurple lights, great for their time, but growing more obsolete by the day. I haven’t run a ballast for at least 9yrs, and that was only because I didn’t want to say goodbye to them. QB’s have taken over, and for good reason. Power consumption, space, heat and cost just to name a few. I run a Mars 600 in my veg tent, a sunraise and parfactworks in my flower tents. Nothing against Spider, Viparspectra, HLG, and so many other well respected light companies, I just refuse to believe they are the only true players in the game. The extra space and money saved was enough to make me wave fairwell to the HPS, but they served me well, and I believe once you switch to LEDs, you will feel the same.

I have almost zero experience with HPS, but have been running LED for almost 2 years. I grow in tents and my tent temps are usually 7 degrees warmer then the room the tent is in.

Yes are 20 degrees cooler imo only, but temps in tent arent unbareble With leds. Were with hps. Omly 2nd run with leds and loving them.

What’s your current set up pal and how many hps was you running?

Was running 1k in 4x4 now 600w in same, temps actually about 30 degrees cooler now and inline not running full tilt. Just 1 light grower but leds are changing that.

Never used boards, have 8 bar type 600w wouldnt change my light on a bet. Loving leds but is good light too.

Suggest the 1000 watt Co2! Seems like best bang for buck but there are some very good bar lights out there, can be closer than boards, my light rated at 1ft. But is over half a year old, newer is better and higher wattage. And 1000w will do a 5x5 np. You said 4 lights so 10x10 or 8x8?

Depending on hps wattage 1000w hps equal to 600w led, 600w hps same as 400watt led approx. Only. But close to mark. BC Blondes 440w is real nice light too. An australian company has some impressive lights too.

there is a law of watts in = btu out. you are going to get 3.41 btu out for every watt you put in. period. no matter what kind of light it is.
the advantage to leds is that there is less radiant heat, so the surfaces in your grow area won't absorb as much of the heat, and you can use less watts to get the same results you would get from h.i.d. lighting, so less watts in = less btus out.
but do they actually run cooler? no...they ALL make 3.41 btu per watt...they just sometimes make it in different forms that may be easier to get rid of.
and that's toasters, hairdryers, tvs, industrial strength dildos....they all produce 3.41 btu per watt

That's interesting because I couldn't work the fuck out how my heater and dehumidifier both heated the tent to within a few 10th of each other (both 150w) one being a heater it's reasonable expectation that it will produce more heat than a dehumidifier... It doesn't + the dehumidifier lowers rh as well as heating .

I,m using 400w of led I'm surprised at how much heat is generated, as said up thread, the heat is much the same but its easier to maintain with higher rh% and there's much less radiant heat.
I think hps takes a bit of beating, in my climate led is useless outside of summer, that radiated heat becomes a bonus during autumn/winter/spring.

Thanks Roger you simplified it plain and simple. Alot cooler than a 1k hps 400w cooler. Is what l should of said 40% cooler by design. Instead of 20 degrees which was inaccurate to say the least ty for straightening me up Roger l now have a better answer.

I believe it depends on what kind of led you're talking about. My quantum board stays cool underneath the board, so do my bars, but my cobs are a different story. They're more like halogens and I can feel heat in the light beam. They heat my tent up something fierce but I feel like I get more penetration with them, so I use them to flower.

Your COBs have a much lower photon efficacy on average. So they definitely convert more watts directly into heat before it becomes light.
