Hey silky check this out for ur answers on hydroton and to see about dwc bro.
https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/123657-bubbleponics-beginners.html

Also on the light sources ill be right back with an edit with some links.
Ok bro heres a link to another thread i put together. No do not try and put a m/h or hps bulb into a regular socket.
The halide i showed in the pic was picked up at my local saltwater fish store. It ran me about 150 bux ballast included. Ive seen them online for about 100 bux lamp and ballast. Anyhow check this link out for light sources dude. Home depot sell a 100 watt m/h light fixture in the home security isle for something like 70 bux.

Hope that helps

Day 35/20:
So right now this is the temporary set up for my 65k CFLs. Because of my rigged hood I have, it is in the way where I would hang the CFLs from above like I did in the beginning. Dont ask me why, but right now I can not have these hooked up to the same timer as my HPS.. so right now I manual turn on/off the CFLs in the morning/night... does this throw off/confuse the plants photoperiod?? Even if the HPS is set to the timer?? (The CFLs are never on before or longer than the HPS.. so I don't change from 18/6.. just the amount of light...

The plants are doing well, may just be placebo or something, but I think I'm noticing growth on the verge up a spurt.

All but Franky (the youngest) has roots out of the pot... Here is Fox with the what I feel is the strongest 'system' (LOL.. I know). Though I have a question... I think I use larger net pots than some of the other people i am trying to compare root systems too. Now is it stupidly simple of me to think mine are coming fine, just having more hydroton/pot to get through???

id put the rockwool closer to the bottm yout really dont need hydroton if u have it in a big block u can just put a cover over the top for moisture retention and light strikes to create algae!! also build a reflector you are they is no light hitting the tops just the side it feeds more light actully being horizontal then vertical creating more light intesity and higher yeilds!!!

checke me out dude but yea let the water hit the rockwool directly and look at my growth in one week dude amazing pics on my thread!!

There is a reflector there, just a little higher above the HPS... I'll hang the CFLs here in the week, just right now its harder, because the reflector is in the way, so I have to rig an alt. solution.

Quick Update:
Day 36/21:
Last night Franky's new set of leaves (that I said were so 'STRONG' before) drooped major hard, major quick. All of their cubes have been stone dry, probably for a few days, so since Franky is the only without roots out of the pot, I watered her a little... she perked up this morning.

Fox has 5 roots coming out! Yeap... root explosion around the corner...

Also, I am going to do a water/solution change today.. should I switch o full strength nutes? (from 1/4tsp - 1tsp a gallon)

Update:
Make that 6 roots out of Fox's basket!

What should I do to when I change water? Keep nutes at 1/4? Or go for 1/2 or full??

Today is Day 10 of being in the DWC...

Go a quarter leggo see what they do.......... if they explode like i think they are going to then bump it up to half ...... U dont need to get crazy with ur veg nuts bro trust me for what ur doing ur plants are going to be uncontrollable as it is in 2 weeks tops!

U will see ur plants are going to grow so fast that its most likely u are only going to make it thru one maybe 2 water changes...the clones i just cycled only made one water change before they outgrew my veg space at 11 inches..

Dont waste ur nuts....hope that helps

Keep in mind u may have to feed a couple times in the 2 week period!

+REP... wait I still can't, but here it is in spirit! :)

Thank DL... dont know where my grow would be without your help for sure. I'll keep them at 1/4 and do what you say... I hope they're about to take off... like Fox... 6 roots now, and last night I think it was just 2!!

I think I'll flower at 12" will they be ready by then? I plan to top as soon as I have room after the 6th node (Fox should be ready to top soon me thinks). As of now I room for 2.5 foot tall plants, if I re-rig my HPS I could get another foot or so... maybe a total of 4 feet max... 3.5' to be safe...

Yea bro i would say do some research on ak47 grow patterns.... u mention a unknown cross so if ur unsure of the growth during flower then i would say 16 inches tops in veg..... Ur not working with alot of reach hieght tho....

Keep in mind that once u top them prolly around 6-8 inches u can drop ur cfls closer to help promote more stem growth until u reach ur final veg hieght dude... Let them things snap back b4 u top bro u will know when they start blowing up i dont want to see u stunt them again....dont stress them anymore...take it easy no more crazy stuff lmao

Also if u do top them u better clone them bro! So i can show u how to grow dwc properly...ur grow kinda stressed me out bro, i dont like giving alot of advice mostly cuz i was really unsure what u may had done b4 i got here! But u can rest assured i will be here till u harvest those hookas!

Good job dude! Growing is simple, the more u stress and counteract the more problems!

I'll for sure wait to top then bro.

Though it may be another grow or two before I clone :-/ I just don't have room for another chamber, or room for another dwc at the moment.

However, back to aquarium schtuff... Could I use a 'nano cube' (google?) as some type of seedling/cloning humi-chamber???

Clone or not, my next grow will for sure start with peat plugs and go by your step by step

Hey leggo, one of the biggest lessons I've learned is that it pays to be super easy with the veg nutes. Really all I try to do is get the plant into flower alive and green as possible (not always so green:roll:). Once in flower with the proper nutes you can load them up immediately to almost full strength. Very hard to overdose on Bloom nutes. If I have any sickly plants they turn around real quick once I put them into flower. But veg is different. Can't count the number of times I have burned plants. So if you are ever trying to decide whether you want more or less Grow nutes, go with less.

You don't need clone "room" at all. You could fit my setup under a standard size cardboard box or a cabinet. All you need is for the clones to root and then you just skip veg and put them straight into flower. You get a whole bunch a 1-2 foot tall plants that are just solid colas. Just something to consider.

Here's my setup:

Works!

That's a 26watt bulb. Just get something with half the wattage and move it closer. You could fit that practically anywhere.

Thanks for the help Mared Juwan!! I didn't know they were so much less fragile during flower.. I hope they take off so I can put into flower in a couple weeks... I think I'll feel more at ease when I see buds

Ahh.. ya'll are trying to get me to rethink cloning, and you just may!

This is just a though, but I have one of these...

Could I maybe use this as a chamber for clones?? It has cooling fans, and a 24watt compact duel 50/50 flourecent (one white one blue)??

But if I take clones to flower (once they have roots) how to I get more clones? Shouldn't you take clones while in veg??

Yea man, I don't think it is that the plants become stronger in flower but that the bloom nutes are far lower in nitrogen which is the danger when it comes to nute burn. Bloom nutes are mainly phosphorous and potassium which are a lot harder to OD on.

That is a good point about not being able to clone again if you go straight from rooting to flower. It takes approx 2-3weeks of veg for a clone to grow enough to provide new cuttings. So it would take a bit more to keep it going beyond one time. IMO it's worth the effort because you are getting guaranteed females that grow faster than seedlings for FREE every time. Saves money, space, and effort in the long run. Plus it is really cool to take a cut piece of plant that would usually get tossed in the trash and make a whole new plant out of it.

more and more tempting...

lemme do some cloning research :)

Day 37/22:
Not a whole lot of change... Fox now has her 7th root!... about to head out of town for a day (maybe two), excited to see them after I leave for a bit...

Notice less reaching for the blue CFLs. When I first added the 65ks.. the plants were going straight for them, I was constantly rotating every few hours. Now, not so much, were they starved for blue and now have their fill? Either way, I'm not loosing the CFLs.

Also, my pH goes up every couple of days... I ususally have to lower from 6.2-6.4 to my 5.8-6.0 range... is there a reason for this?

also, thinking (read above) more and more about trying to clone this bunch... jury's out.

Leggo bro u are off the hook with ur nano cubes and stuff lmao...Bro u prolly could convert that into some type of clone cube all u need is water an air stone and some cuttings bro!
Mared has a sick set up bro +reps to mared and his entire grow, he has mastered his method thats efficient enuff to sustain his personal grow demands and i like the fact he uses the peat plugs also a perfect match for dwc!
Leggo if u top ur plants bro u better clone ur toppings!

Its so simple dude.....
All i do is cut my tops above the last true node on a 45 degree angle, follow the same scraping techniques passed down and then simply put my cuttings in a glass of water just enuff to cover the scraping on the stem. No dome, No root hormones nothing simple tap water.
Then i place them in indirect light ( usually on the side of a bucket in veg ) change my water once a day in the cup and usually within a week at most i get lil white bumps on the stem ( beginning root structure ).
At which time i put in a pot with an inch buffer of hydroton from the bottom of the pot and i keep my water level directly below the bottom of my pots till i see roots hit the water.
Its really that simple to clone bro and i do mine in a 13 X 18 space. All u need is a small small bucket for a few tops. U can put them 3 in the same net pot and transfer them to ur tub when u get root structure growth in the water. Usually within 2 weeks in the bucket.
Dont waste ur tops if ur going to cut bro.

And dont waste ur cube on clones lol, put some simple corals or even raise some lil nemos in it, lmao.

Hope that helps

Thanks DL! If you cut right above the last node, how tall are your clones? I'm picturing small since you top before 12"...? So I'm litteral taking the top I cut off a d making a clone from it?

If so, then I'm sold... I thoght I topped, then while I had the razor out, take a couple branches... That's why I was hesitant, less cutting the better for me. That's for sure.

On other notes.
What do y'all think about my pH raising every couple days? Something causing this?

Day 38/23:
Not at home, but 'sitter' said that Franky had drooped hardcore... Maybe even dead? I shall see this evening. Had him give her a couple tablespoons of water. She is the one yet to have roots out of the pot :-/

you may want to start your own thread... That way you can post your pics, ask questions... Maybe even start a journal?
