ISO hash turning to crystals when scrape off plate

Hi!
I've been making hash out of 99 % ISO for about 2 years now (have bubble hash bags, but didn't have enough product until my last harvest & just haven't gotten the nerve to use 3+ oz at one time yet!), and when I harvested my White Widow this year, the consistency changed. I've had it come out this way before, but just on occasion. This one does it almost EVERY time and it's frustrating!

Normally, I get a sticky dark brown blob. (I make a tincture and reduce it all the way- the last half on a Corelle plate-easier to scrape than a pie plate due to the soft curve rather than the sharp turn at the edge) When I scrape it, it used to just come right off if I kept the plate warm over the hot water & fan while I scraped it off the blade each time- otherwise, it could be harder & crystallize.

When I do a batch with White Widow, it's mostly crystals. It's very hard to scrape off, and the little crystals bounce everywhere; all over my thumb as I scrape (can't get that off with the razor!), all over the counter, which is granite, so I can scrape some of it off, etc;....but, it's hard to deal with and I don't know how much I'm measuring when I put it in the pipe. So, I think I end up using too much; partly because I have to have enough to get me to sleep through the night. It's the ONLY way I can due to an illness I have (besides medicines, which even though some work, they only do for a day or two. I also don't like taking them).

When I searched for this, the only thing I found on crystals said pressing it would work, and I've never done that. I use 10 gms of cannabis, so I get about 1gm of hash. About half that is crystals, so not enough to put in the press that came with the bubble bags.

Any suggestions? Is pressing the way to go?

thanks!

Does that mean if I make bubble hash out of White Widow, will it also not come out well? Sure hope it’ll be all right. Most of my crop is White Widow! I only had 3 plants of Amnesia Haze & 18 WW :o.

No not at all. Just because there's a difference in texture or consistency doesn't make any better or worse. A good example is resin from most chem plants is extremely sticky, hard to work with sticky lol. Another example would be hash plants, the sift from these plants are usually sandy. It all still does the trick, just unique in their own ways.

THat texture isn't a bad thing, and is usually what I shoot for. Having a dry crystaline extract makes me feel very confident all the alcohol has been evaporated from the oil. I don't use any heat during my evaporation process either to retain as many terps as possible. It can definitely be tough to scrape the crystaline extracts up. I like to use a flexible razor blade held with needle nose pliers. That gives me a solid grip and lets me scrape smooth against the surface of the pyrex dish. Once you are done scraping if you put the "crystal powder" into a little parchment paper pocket you can warm it gently with your fingers and it presses together into what should be shatter at room temp.

Thanks! That’s what I was looking for. I thought there may be something to it by something I saw when I was searching , but it wasn’t exactly the same, so I wanted to check it out. The pressing it was the different part. ..the way it was done was overkill for the small amount that was crystallized . I do use heat, though. The only way I was able to get most of it to scrape without it becoming crystallized (it had hardly done it before I harvested the WW, and had been coming out dark brown and sticky). This does look better as I could tell there had to be alcohol left in it.

How long does it take (using 6 oz total alcohol) to evaporate without heat? Sure would be good to know, as I imagine it’s longer than the one day?

thanks again!

I evap 1 quart of alcohol at a time in about 24 hrs. I place my dish in front of a fan or my dehumidifier with a thin filter over the top(I use a basic furnace filter). The filter allows air flow but catches any dust from the area or fan. When its done its typically a thin crystallized film. Sometimes if the batch has a ton of oil in it, I'll have droplets of pure oil form on the dish too. With the airflow, it always fully evaps and turns out nice and clean.

I totally agree with Macsnax too. Different types of oil will turn out differently. I've also noticed that I've gotten different results from the same plants resin when there is major humidity in the material or in the air.

Dude I know you've made a lot of iso, when you showed up I just let you do the talking lol. I rarely make it, usually just from goop collected off trim scissors. Hope you guys had a good Xmas brotha.

My daughter had a little bit of a bug, but is feeling better already. Otherwise we had a great Christmas, nice and chill. I bought myself a new walther pistol as my "treat yourself gift".

Hope you are having a good holiday season as well bud!

Here is a picture from a few years ago of some fresh scraped oil. This turned into shatter once it was mushed together in the parchment its on.

There is a link in my signature line for a tutorial on basically how I make my QWISO. I have refined a couple steps over the years, but that's it.
