pro mix or coco

Hope everyone is doing well. Recently my local hydro store has had some supply issue with pro mix. I always use pro mix and have for years now. Unfortunately they don't know when they will be getting some and I'm sure they will be getting it. I need to transplant asap! They do however have coco. Now I know some people love coco. One point in the past I did try it and failed badly. One because I got root aphids and I do believe it came from the coco. It was tupur I believe. Not even sure if it's still a brand. Also I was told that buds grown in coco have not as good terps and buds grown in peat based mediums. This could be speculation and blown out of context but it has stuck with me.
Anyway I'm more than likely going to have to use coco this time around. Does anybody have advice on growing in these mediums? Possibly what you guys might prefer like if someone had contaminated coco before, yield, quality, etc. I run drain to waste with house and garden base nutes and I will obviously switch to coco with the cal mag. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated.

Sunshine #4 is good, just like promix.

I do love coco. Never achieved the yields with anything else. If you do coco, read the cocoforcannabis website. Canna is good. Buy mosquito dunks and yellow sticky paper just in case of gnats. Not sure about your nutes.. jacks 5-12-26/megacrop (2 part), cal-nit, and MKP. Water everyday, don't let it dry ever, 3 or 5gal buckets, drain to waste (5-10% runoff).. ph meter (cheap ones) or ph drops, tds meter..

You can make your own promix.. 420 mag .. search "making your own soilless mix aka Faux Mix"

Reading around here the sunshine #4 has gone to the crappers.pH outa wack every bag is different i read.
The key to coco is having an easy way to collect runoff, tray with a drain,20% runoff ALWAYS!.Check ppm same out as in simple.

Coco is great, but be sure to rinse it prior to use. I prefer the dehydrated compressed blocks. I get 5KG blocks for $10 that are ~2.5 cf after being hydrated. The loose bags of coco are usually $20-30 for 2.5 cf and even though they say double/triple rinsed they still have residual salts. I used to use Promix HP but my local hydro store charges $50 for the 3.8 cf bale. I can get 12.5 cf of coco for that much and my plants grow just as good.

If you try coco, get a reliable pre-rinsed, pre-buffered brand with a well known consistency and track record to start with-like Canna (in bags). Once you know what good coco should be like, then venture into rinsing/buffering the bricks. I imagine a lot of people had bad experiences with high EC coco to begin with, especially a few years ago.

My store gets mother earth coco. Is that reputable?

I haven't used it personally, but I know someone who does and he says it's properly rinsed and buffered, but that it has more perlite in it than he likes. I think it should be fine, but I don't bother to use perlite with coco anymore, though a lot of people still do.

they are both soiless media with their own properties that must be met to properly grow in each one. The trick with coco is to run some dry cycles the first week or two with alternating low ppm flushes to get the plants root bound asap. then you beginning stepping up the multifeeds. typically by week 2 or 3 im feeding up to 5-7 times a day dtw in 2 gal pots. the smaller the pot the faster you can get them root bound and multifeed. I run 4 plants under 1kw DE lights in a 5x5 scrog and 2g pots are the perfect size. anything bigger and it simple takes too long to get them root bound fast.

I used tupur and that when I had bud issues. Scares the heck out of me now. One of the reasons why I’m so hesitant to use coco

try it in a couple pots and see again....its one of my all-time favorite mediums - right next to Manna Mix from Vital Earth
