No you were off by by 5 square feet; 25 sq ft you quoted, vs 20 sq feet which is the actual rating for the lamp. So you were off by 20% there.

And as far as wattage, you under rated it by 20 watts; up to 500w actual vs 480w your rating. That's around 4% difference.

If you are going to make speculations, please make sure they are accurate, and not false news. Overall you under-rated the HLG 550 by 24%.

Looking and comparing the V2 Eco, V2 Rspec, and now the 650R Diablo, the careful observer can get an idea of how diode type and quantities can effect output and efficiency.

Its pretty interesting to look at how their products are evolving. I think its a golden age for led in North America.

I haven't seen that. However, my own opinion is that thc production is dependant on a number of variables. My observation is that my bud is frostier and producing more trichromes with the hps. Unless your bud is tested by a certified lab, thc strength is kind of speculative.
I'm about the look, smell and taste.

Yeah I have had both types, and the sun makes the best, followed by HID, then LED. Reasons being density, stickiness, bud size, and quality of stoneage. The LED is a great option for less power consumption, just haven't actually had any weed from LED that changed my mind anyways. The sun is the best when done correctly as far as smell size potency and taste.

If you have ANY doubt that LED works as well if not better than HPS, I suggest you check out Remos current run. He's certainly never going back to HID ever again. Reasons are obvious. Those are 600w spectrum king fixtures that's he's used literally 12 of 24 hrs, everyday, for the last I'd say almost 2 yrs.

Things also need to be transparent and it is obvious the LED's where most likely provided to Remo free of charge or heavily discounted as a PR move.
Even those Spectrum Kings are not good enough for 95% of the trolls in this section, most stating inefficient yada yada...
But most important to note - Remo's Buds are no longer the SIZE OF YOUR HEAD!

A 400w Hortilux in a 6sq/ft area gives 66w sq/ft


To equal that with the very best LED. Which means Samsung/Osram Diodes you would need 268w of the best LED. For the money you wont beat the HLG.

I have a 645w Gavita 1700e. Its 1700umol

Gavita says this is a direct replacement for the best Single Ended 1000w HID in a 4 x 4 area. Which is a Hortilux HPS.

Going by Gavita Specs one needs 40.2w Sq/ft of the best LED Diodes.

These arent my opinions, but what Hortilux, and Gavita use as the bottom line for the best production per Sq/ft.

This also keeps it simple with no guessing.

Yes one can get by with less, but it is not optimal, and plants will grow slower with less production.

Can I ask a question about your Gavita 1700e ? What height do you typically run it above canopy?

I remember way back when I discovered Heath Robinsons 600w vertical sog in 4" waste pipe. And thinking wow, imagine if we could roll and spread that light out on a flat plane. Now look at the choice of light we have today.

I started growing indoors about 6 years ago using California Lightworks led's. While I got good results I always felt that I wasn't maximizing the plants potential. Even after getting past all of the typical nube mistakes, I still wasn't satisfied. I've used every led that CLW makes. The best results that I got was with their COB lights. I also bought a couple of 315 watt CMH's with 3100k bulbs. Still, I was not satisfied. I wasn't getting the weight or nice frosty dense buds. I was doing everything the same as a friend of mine who has been growing for a bit longer than me. My friends grows always far exceeded mine. He recently retired a 600 watt HPS and offered it to me. So, I installed it and did a grow with it. The difference was startling! Nice, big frosty buds and plenty of weight.
I have been a big proponent of LED's. However, after my experience with the hps, I don't think that I'll be going back to led anytime soon.
I understand the specs and efficiency of led's. However, my eye test tells me that I'm getting better results with
hps than with any of the other lights I've tried. I'm going to use my cobs as supplemental lighting only.


All that being said, for you, I would recommend the California light works Solar Extreme COB light. It's a quality product built in the US. It's 400 watts and you can probably find one for under $400.

What size tent do you have? I jist recently switched to hps, put in a 600W in my 4 x 8 tent.

I have always seen 44" x 44" as the maximum recommended space for flowering with 600w HPS. Braver folk would probably run 2 to 3 in a tent the size of yours. What model of reflector does your lamp have?

i find using the HPS with 1000w led’s positioned on both sides of the hps gives you the best of both worlds. Dense super buds that are super frosty. Like to hit it the ladies with just LED the last two weeks before harvest. Usually pulls out the purples and reds

Nods, I want to get to the frosty stage - adding another 600watt hopefully will at least be a little better denseness than the led.
