The technical definition of defoliation is to strip all leaves. Agent orange, something most people have heard of, was used to defoliate large sections of jungle in the Vietnam war to expose the enemy. This is the technical definition of pruning- a horticultural and silvicultural practice involving the selective removal of certain parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots. You see the difference?
Thank you common sense has showed up.

they are only talking about how it relates to cannabis

That’s what I was asking you as a new grower. Defoliation definition in a book is different than what is commonly used in growing?

So is pruning what you are doing? And does it damage the plant in the same way you’re saying defol will?
Pruning is far less stressful on a plant as long as you don't go overboard. You'll hear people who promote defoliation talk about the "explosive growth" they see after defoliation. The reason they see that "explosion" in growth is because the plant is replacing those fan leaves, as quickly as it can, so it can pull it the light to feed. Now think about that for a second...if the plant is putting all that effort into replacing the leaves, then how the hell is that supposed to "focus the energy on the bud sites"? The thing that really cracks me up is most of those who fiercly support defoliation will also tell you that flushing is "bro science" when there are actual situations where flushing will help (like when pH is way off or you have salt buildup in the growing medium).

I trimmed and saw the new growth shoot up. It’s pretty obvious and you agree with that? I was called a liar for that every statement. Think about this all those new “shoots” are now getting light they previously were not. Which includes their leaves.

Thank you no one had said that on here. They just keep calling me dumb for not agreeing with them. So there are 3 camps
Defol
Pruners/trimmers
Don’t touch my plant

I’m confused on how trimming/pruning for airflow doesn’t stunt the growth in the same way removing leaves would?
Bottom branches that dont get hardly any light dont produce shit for bud. Any seasoned grower will tell you this. So if they are never going to produce anything worthwhile, it makes sense to remove them before the plant spends all sorts of energy growing them out. The plant wastes a lot of energy growing those branches trying to find light with them and they never find the light. Yes pruning does stunt plants, but stunting a photo plant in veg isnt really an issue, you just stay in veg a little longer. The whole point is training the plant to produce nice top sites and an even canopy. I mean fuck do you guys consider topping plants bad too? You going to call topping a form of defoliation? Stunting the plant?

Cannabis has apical dominance, which causes the plant to focus on the main cola more than the rest of the branches, and topping breaks the apical dominance. Topping is pruning...not defoliation.

You're cutting of leaves so the plant can focus on growing new leaves ?
How does this make any sense ?

I agree but if you remove them you’re defoliating IMO.

listen as a new member there is a lot of bs on here. Over the past two weeks I’m trying to decide if I should defoliate my auto or not. I tried it, posted I took 1 large fan from my auto and now 10 new spots are getting light. I was ripped for it. I’m trying to get a count of who does what and why.

when I see people post - don’t cut your plant it hurts your growth and stunts it, etc then see they cut branches and leaves that they think are problems I disregard their advice. Sorry.

I respect the don’t touch your plant peoples opinion because they are making an argument and sticking to it like they believe it. Defols seem to do the same. the people in the middle you have to count as defols by definition IMO no matter what they call themselves.

Four definitions of defoliation

to strip (a tree, bush, etc.) of leaves.

to destroy or cause widespread loss of leaves in (an area of jungle, forest, etc.), as by using chemical sprays or incendiary bombs, in order to deprive enemy troops or guerrilla forces of concealment.

to lose leaves

(of a tree) having lost its leaves, especially by a natural process.

By definition 3 and 4 the plant defoliate itself by nature. So there’s my answer.

You plucked a few leaves less than 2wks ago, how can you come to any conclusion so soon ?

You'd fit in great over at r/microwgrowery. All the IG growers there will love you for your interpretation and, if you think people are ridiculing you in this thread, then prepare to be slaughtered over there. Plenty of people will be on board with the "defoliation is awesome" but they will still tear you apart for thinking pruning is the same as defoliation.
