Pistils vs. Trichomes

Looks like it's foxtailing a bit, likely due to heat. Looks alright to me though. I'd let that go another week and then reassess. How long has it been under 12/12 lighting?

Thanks for your advice! 8 weeks since first flowers appeared. I haven't even scoped the trichomes yet but will be checking them over the weekend. Ran the tent at 80 F under a qb white LED until a few days ago when the "spires" appeared. I have brought temps down to about 76-78 lights on and 73 ish lights off, about the best I can get the temps. Lots of advice to run mid-80's when using these new LEDs but it seems my strains don't like the heat. Thanks again.

Sounds like you are in a prime zone. Congrats on the upcoming harvest.

That's great, but doesn't answer my question about how long they've been in 12/12 lighting. IMO foxtailing isn't always bad. I've had some strains that do it consistently, and others that do it when it gets hotter but not in colder temps.

Is it possible to harvest too late? All these posts seem to be saying no!

I would rather have more thc and less cbn.

I like a majority milk with some amber for a kicking thc high. Some people like a ton of amber for a sedative high.I know people that like clear and milk trichomes and run it to dabs. All are enjoyable.

Some strains will have a lot of amber on them by the time the hairs fully curl in. This Haze just tricked me, a lot more amber that I realized or wanted but I always wait for the swell. Turned into really stoney weed. As long as you have hard nugs and a lot of trichomes of either kind, I think you will be happy.

Edit: I may have smoked part of the test nug early.

new to this so not sure if i am replying to this thread, or gg42os post, however, she taught me a very valuable lesson and saved a lot of my harvest. first, let me say that i have always gone by the 'longest is best' theory, often letting my plants go til first frost or mid-late October. however, when i lost some amazing harvests to inside bud rot, i came upon a formula of: overall plant look and health, pistils, hollow stalks, old yellow leaves, trikes, and had much luck with this method. Cut to this year. started working with some other growers who claim vast knowledge, and basically throw gobs of money at their grows, to create ideal cannabis, and solve problems. come to find out, well, ill be silent here, you can use your senses. SO, i become convinced that it appears that it is time to evolve with the times, since EVERYBODY KNOWS that it is cloudy trikes that make a plant ideal. some schools say amber is degraded thc, regardless, i get my first real 'dope scope' anddddd- plants look AMAZING!!! CLOUDY!! YESSSss! so ...... with these beautiful cloudy trikes, the pros, and according to MANY, MANY, people on this site, my plants were ready. fat, sticky buds got whacked! it was ganjag42o that broke my heart yet enlightened me at the same time. it seems that no one EVER finishes the dang sentence... cloudy trikes, yes, but ON THE CALYX! I was a victim of my own stupidity. I knew in my heart they could and would be much bigger, here's what tripped me up, first, I grew in 3-5 gal pots instead of in ground, as i usually do. Second, I had to move three plants because the cops made me, dug them up in flower from the ground and transplanted them, these stunted a little, and even showed amber. Second, i relied on the damn scope and the advice of the morons that told me it was the 'proper' way to choose peak harvest. third, I did not come here and ask for help. had I, I would hat learned, probably from gg420, what i did wrong. here's some of the plants I chopped... there was definitely more potential, fortunately i stopped chopping when i received the correct Intel, I still have four of these girls left, and the last pic is of my humble little backyard grow, one of a handful of projects going, and the garden im referring to. so, to make my point, sugar leafs and any other part of the plant is irrelevant when it comes to cloudy trikes, as you can see from my FALSE readings, its all about THE CALYX! thank you so much for the education GanjaGurl420, and im sorry if i butchered your name, lol. truly grateful. and usually, for me, pistils and trikes correlate when done, (normally) that's all i got for today, peace out.

Awe shucks.... thanks for all the nice words! I'm just excited for you to really try the difference between final harvest and the ones you already took.
I guess I like trying to show people because I had no one to show me. Lots of trial and errors and lots of mistakes lol! Just when I was about to hit a brick wall it's like I had an epiphany and was able to reach my full potential. Much of the tweaking of my techniques I learned here on this very forum. So all in all i like to share with others.. and now you can do the same

Turned into really stoney weed. As long as you have hard nugs and a lot of trichomes of either kind, I think you will be happy.

from what i understand, the amber trikes are scientifically degraded thc and far more cbn. however, i think there is a dichotomy, as they say, - 'the proof is in the pudding' and when actually smoked, its what blows wind through your hairy parts that matters. personally, I am a believer that the cloudy calyx is the way to go, amber no doubt has its niche, and strains Im sure make a difference, Im going to fall back on the old 'personal preference' limb. A sponge is a sponge no matter the shape. The buds soak up and hold water/rain and if your in the harvest window and the weather says rain I would cut em. If you NEED more time you can tarp em and shake off as much excess moisture as possible

I’m lucky so far but worried about any cool and wet spells. That’s a good point about the buds soaking the rain.

When I see the plants pop, I take a side bud off the plant. When that bud dries 5-7 days later, the rest of the bud should be ready to harvest. Gives you a bud with an energizing high to smoke while you harvest, and lets you test the strain before the crop is done.

I'm right at that stage now, going to keep watching for those trichs to turn red. So far everything is milky on my one sativa with a few red heads just starting....My others are showing brown pistils but haven't begun to foxtail just yet. Weather is being good to me with temps climbing into the 80's the rest of this week. Usually the rains hasten my harvest times, but not so far.

Took some 45-90x pics today after I lost a branch to wind and a split. I'm in week ~5 of flowering but I don't think the weather will hold much longer. This first pic you can see some ambering of the trichomes. This was a smaller weaker lower branch. I'm ok with any time now but I was expecting to hit at least week 6 of 8. They are still filling in, swelling and frosting up.

My setup for these pics. It does video too. $14.99 machinists magnetic base, the camera was on ebay for $90 supposedly 14MP 1080p, you can't trust the listings specs on these things. This will take these stills above and record 720p .MOV to sd card. The only 1080P is HDMI out so you'd need a separate capture to get full HD video from it. The lens I paid about $40 for separately, the more you spend for a quality lens, the better your results will be. I cheaped out.

Your leaves are much farther along and that is why we are suppose to check from the calyx which is still weeks from being done.

Thank you @ganga gurl420, You're dead on, I'm just 1 day in to my 6th week of flowering, shooting for 8 weeks weather permitting. Calyx (plural?) are swelling, I'm still seeing gains with each nice day. I was taught to hope for the best but plan for the worst so I'll be taking a couple stalks early but not yet. The wind has provided some early harvest already and the one in the 2nd image can't take much more wind, it's barely hanging on. Definitely the next on the chopping block.

It has been noted that the first formed calyxs and preflowers can be very amber too.

Eventually it all starts to amber and it is those cues im looking for rather than how much amber i got or dont
