Pistils vs. Trichomes

I've never had more than a couple of amber trichs until after they swell. At least on the calyxes. If you're checking the trichs on the leaves you'll definitely cut early.
As to clear trichs and potency, I read about a researcher who found that there were actually higher levels of THC in clear trichs than in cloudy, but I can't remember the name. I was looking because I had a light fall on one of my plants at the 5 to 6 week mark, it snapped the stem clean off. All the trichs were clear, but I trimmed, dried, and cured it anyway. It got me high, but it came on fast, then faded fast. There's more to the high than THC.
Yeah agreed. If you are checking the plant on the right spot there wont be a ton of amber. Usually I'd say I have between 3 and 10% at most.
And you are right...there is so much more then just the thc. Thanks for responding

The internet says one parent of my cross is a 7 week strain, the other half of my cross is a 8-9 weeks strain. I'm nearly at day 80 and the bud is still changing rapidly every day.

Some phenos are very differant than others, I cut a sister of this at 60 an it was just fine, another at 70 and it was ok (needed more time though) and this pheno that's going to kill me if I take it to full ripeness I could see it "wanting" 14 weeks to be fully ripe.

It's really a mix of frustrating and amazing, the buds are nearly as fat as 2 liter soda bottles and as tall as a beer can all over these mother fuckers, but its throwing new white hairs every freakin day still. The bud is constantly stretching out and looking like it's going to larff out (almost like heat stress but the temps are actually good) but then 2 or 3 days go by and it fills in and starts the process over.

So I'm in this battle of being a perpetual grower doing 4 stage flower, my veg wants to go in, my shit ain't finishing, and of course as it would have to be to be stressful, I've been out nearly 2 weeks >.<

I've looked at link a few times now clear but still confusing, from what I make pistol>stigma>bracts>calyx the way it reads. Either way pistils retract into calyx.

What strain is it? You could always just throw that late finisher in the corner and put your new plants into flower.

Its scrog and so is totally impossible the buds are much bigger than what they are woven into so they cant be removed except by cutting and the plants would never support their own weight.

Gotcha. When I scrog I like to only run clones of the same pheno (unless you have super stable genetics in your seeds). Then when harvest comes I just cut the plants at the bottom of the main stem, and hang the entire screen upside down to dry. I trim my buds after they dry.

I normally do the same, had been running mono crop for a while and people were asking for a change. Ran a set for trial. These next few months are gonna be a bit hectic for me as I add a third. But atleast the third one is a strain I've grown before and is pretty stable and I've never come across a pheno that takes over 60 days of it.

I also dry trim but at this time because it's a multi stage perpetual under a 5x10 screen it's a metal screen fixed to the wall.

Thanks. It's C99 from Female Seeds. Personally I don't check trics. I can tell when it's ready without a scope.
Nice bud! My Nirvana OG Kush has a similar look and I think of mine as foxtails. Maybe I just don't know what a foxtail really looks like. @Kingrow1 already told me to cut my losses (although he went by my description as I didn't post a photo). Maybe I need to ask is my attached photo foxtailing or just stacking?

I wasnt saying to cut your losses i was describing a situation where bud foxtails making new growth on a pretty much done bud. You cant always wait for the new growth to mature but say 80% is fully mature ready to harvest.

As for your bud its starting to foxtail, only a little so all might be ok. If ots running well past straon times and not finishing amazingly well then it had small stresses and such most likely. People shout sativa at every airy foxtailed bud thesedays amd even then most of us grow hybrids not full sativas with long flowering :-)

Got it, thanks.

I would like to hear the experienced growers thoughts on when to take a plant.
I see so many posts asking if its chop time and everyone always says look at the trichomes and if they are all cloudy then it's time, even tho the buds dont look done to me (still lots of white pistils)

I dont even start checking trichs until the pistils start dying off and receding. It just has "a look to them" and if I check the calyx they are always perfect.

No matter if I grow indoors or out it's always the same...
So why do so many growers insist on taking early (or what I think is early) when 25% of finally bud weight comes with the swell in the last 2 weeks.
There really is not a right answer. Some strains do not have their trichs turn as cloudy or amber as others. Personally when I find a strain I really like, I go by tests. Harvest clones of the strain at different times. Run tests to see when THC is at it's peak. I also try to keep track of how much more I'm yielding per how much extra time I let it go. Sometimes in certain scenarios it makes things more convenient to harvest early. If I have plants starting to take up too much room in veg, sometimes I will harvest a plant in flower early to make extra room. To me it seemed like in the 90s and before everyone said go by when most of the hairs turn colour. Later in the 2000s everyone said wait until such and such % of your trichs are amber coloured. These generally are not bad ways of telling when a plant is done. These days I could care less how it looks. I care about test results.
You pretty much just don't want diminishing returns.

Looks like it's foxtailing a bit, likely due to heat. Looks alright to me though. I'd let that go another week and then reassess. How long has it been under 12/12 lighting?

Still has some white hairs? Probably ok to harvest. Keep going if want to be couch locked!
Yeah there's still a few white hairs. I plan on letting it go till next Saturday at least if not a little longer. Thanks for your opinion I'm very close I know that!
