Because they didn't have the ability to split the vote like Trump. They used the people that fell hard for Bernie (against Hilary) that wouldn't vote for Trump by convincing them to not vote at all, which was enough suppression that Trump was able to squeak out a win in the key states he needed by less than 70,000 votes. Hilary had 3 mill more in popular.
Edit: If they had a portion of say Harris supporters that they can get to absolutely hate Biden, if Harris dropped, they could use those people to vote for someone else they start pushing (like say someone who says ok to Tulsi Gabbard as VP) to move them over Biden in the primary.
