I've thought about construction. I had a motorcycle accident in 2012, and sadly have a permeantly broken wrist. It doesn't hurt normally, but I'm real afraid to do a job that involves banging or pounding. I've been blowing glass even since I got off dissability. It's fun, and I'm getting pretty good at it, but I'm not ever gonna be fast enough to do high production rates. My arm and wrist just don't let me do things as fast as others. Its the first job I've ever had that I enjoy going to, and would love to keep doing it the rest of my life. As with anything its really hard to start a small business though.

You must do outstanding work. $100,000/yr puts you in the top 30% income bracket in the US and in ratified air for a carpenter.

$50/h *40hr/wk*50 wk/yr = $100,000/yr

Carpentry is good work and offers a lot of flexibility in where to live or who to work for. It pays more than median income but it is a skill position. Somebody off the street with no experience isn't going to be making that. Still, a good carpenter who shows up on time and gets the work done right when they say they will get it done is definitely worth paying for.

I think the people here are saying that the jobs are out there if you work at building the necessary skills. As you say, it's not easy but then again, if they were easy they wouldn't pay well. The advice I've heard others give to people like you who have a passion for something but find it hard to build their business to the point where it can sustain you and yours is -- don't give up but find other work that pays enough and build your business on the side. If one job isn't enough then have two. You can afford to be creative in how to build your glass blowing business when you make enough to keep the wolf away from the door.

There a lot of "carpenters" who don't make much. Some aren't really tradesmen, some are. I was raised in it. I saw who knew things I didn't and learned by getting them to teach me and watching them. Watching doesn't pay well so I knew I had to stay busy, sharpening my skills always. Some companies pay well others don't. Same with people, some are willing to pay fairly like you describe, others want everything for nothing. Union jobs are usually better paying, better for training and they have excellent apprenticeship programs. Learning how to do things safely is important. So is learning how to do things professionally, time is money but speed doesn't impress me the way quality does. Making good use of materials, not wasting lumber and other materials is important too. Knowing what your worth is important. There's a lot of unreported income associated with construction.

Greatest carpenter I ever met was literally a genius. He could do asimyth in his head on the fly.

Back in the day when I was with Holder Engineering, he and I built Gwinnett Arena with nothing but an HP32, a notebook and his brain.

He was a brilliant, brilliant man.

I miss him.

That's definitely what I"m working on doing. I was looking at a factory job this morning that was 3 12 hour shifts per week, which would still leave some extra time to still blow glass and take care of my family.

The reason they don't want to "oust" 45 is the same reason they do everything. They have looked at it, and decided it is a political loser for the party. The Dems will lose votes if they do. I'm not sure if you are old enough to remember, but Clinton's numbers went up a good deal when he was impeached. I have to assume the same thing will happen to 45.

And also there is that little detail of the GOP controlling the Senate, where they actually decide the matter. The quickest way to get him out of office is the 2020 election.

But even if they did do it, most countries still think it's cheaper to ignore it than get into a pissing contest.

Look at the past few posts. Posters who could be characterized as liberal Democrats were talking about how if a person works for it, they don't have to settle for a low wage job. The talk was about working hard, training up and nose to the grindstone. Nobody was talking about how there is nothing one can do but settle for a minimum wage job. In contrast, it's the red states where people settle for low wage jobs or the dole.

I screen out all my side job customers, the racists, cheats, rip off artists very quickly by finding out if they support trump. Then I just tell them "I'm not interested" and leave. I hope they feel cheap and used

why can't we just raise the minimum wage to $30 per hour and make all low wage workers much better well off?
