To me a master grower is someone capable of running multiple large scale operations with multiple employees.. In other words a lead grower. Do people actually use this title for anything else?

Maybe some upstart who has not got any formal education like a degree in Agricultural Science or Horticulture or a similar education, like most modern farmers these days have.
Qualifications or not the person who over sees the day to day wishes of the boss (the farm owner) is simply called the Leading hand here on farms.
