Buds smelled good, but now they dont

This last batch I hung dry for 6 days until it felt dry. I sampled a bud and it reaked and was very sticky. Burned great so I jarred with a hygro. The hygro read 64% the next day so I let dry out for more time.

After rejarring and letting it sit overnight the hygro read 60% which is supposed to be a good reading.

The problem is it lost the stickiness and smell.

Is it possible they got over dried despite 60% being a good number to aim for?

I liked it a lot better when it read 64%

It's been a week at 60% and it still hasn't gained back any stickiness and smell.

Pretty pissed. Next time I'mma just use how it feels and smokes as a gauge and forget Simon's thread on curing.

Often you hear about chlorophyll evaporating off over time which is what a cure is.

This bud smelled and smoked great after the dry and it still smokes and burns good but lost that smell. So that chlorophyll bit doesn't make much sense since you can't add chlorophyll back.

I believe my issue to be over drying since despite my meter showing a ''normal" reading. I feel like maybe my hygrometer is off?

Not sure what else it could be. It clearly was dry since I rolled a joint and it burned no problem. But stupidly I trusted a hygrometer to tell me differently and let it sit out for longer.

Man been growing for years and this drying/curing process is the toughest part.

Its not tough, modern humans just aren't human enough. They try to approach everything like a soulless computer calculator instead of a religious observer of reality. Humanity needs to get back into analogue mentality. Not this pulse modulation, riding-a-bike-up-stairs-because-they-are-closer-and-can-be-counted mindset.

Forumtards will tell you to drop humidity. Backwards. Moving forwards, in a gradual wave-like fashion, you hang your plants, then your slowly restrict them to a higher humidity environment. You dont keep dropping humidity then cram them into tiny jars all of the sudden then pull them back out. You want to stabilize the dry, slowly breaking it's ability to hold water. So slow it doesn't notice anything unnatural has happened.

Curing has nothing to do with evaporation of anything but water. Wet buds aren't a substitute for sticky in my world. The best buds are bone dry and caked up. In the growstore hydro kid world, moisture is used as an imaginary substitute for the caked up property of natural weed. Backwards. The speed of the burn should be controlled by the oil/wax/lipid/acid saturation of the bud, not water content. Same with shelf life. And flavor. Curing is about ths conversion of sugars and starches into the 'cake frosting'. I dont care what it's called in some pseudo science jewish media growbook. You know it when you observe it.

The point I'm trying to make: resin scrapped out of a pipe or dab rig doesn't turn to dust over any observable period of time in a natural setting. Why should your weed? If it's truly quality? Go mix one third dab reclaim into 2/3 powdered lawn clippings and tell me that 30% thc weed down at Discount Dicks Weed Emporium has any excuse to collapse into dust after a week on the shelf. Just stop and think about it. Mix 1/3 motor oil into a 2/3 by weight clump dust. And see if it turns back into dust anytime soon. Youre lost because scammers have financial interest in keeping you guessing, chasing your tail, begging fat Mike at the hydro shop to sell you some magic resin in a bottle after they done stripped it out with all the other bottles. Just like the hair product industry.

If you grow the ornamental snake oil methodology you'll be chasing your own tail until you stop. Trying to turn emaciated oilless bud into sticky icky. You cant turn emaciated waterweed into sticky caked up dank. Its impossible. You cant spray it with honey and get dank. Thats the best the pretend growers can come up with though. As soon as you chop that hydro shit it stops off gassing terpenes. There is nothing stored in the plant. Nothing their to hold it, nothing to convert what is stored even if it was there. Thc and plant fiber is all the modern church of "yield first" is capable of , neither of which contribute much to quality.

Once you move on to growing natural weed then you can have a natural understanding that clears the confusion from your calculative mind and allows the instinct of the heart and soul to take charge. If your stem snapped, your bud is too dry to slam into a jar. If someone told you to wait until the stem snapped, did you bother asking how far it should bend before snapping, 33 degrees? 45 degrees? 90? Do not take advice from those calculator heads who are not religious about their Cannabis and cannot compute real world variables. The definition of religion being to observe nature. Fuck the computer minded number worshippers. Who in the past thousands of years of cultivation knew what a hygrometer was? I know growers who still don't. Still don't know how to use a computer. Their weed is better than anything most will ever see in their life. Grown in free muck most would pay to have removed from their land. Never seen the inside of a hydro scam store. Number worship has replaced nature observance and it'll be the death of the species if it continues at this progressive rate. .

Should have left it in jar to cure, 64rh was perfect for 1 burp everyday till 62 then burp every week

I used to have this problem too. Harvest is arguably the most important part of the process. Sounds like you should have let dry longer. This is what I do. The room u dry in is very important. You want it to be between 72 and 75 degrees F. With 50% relative humidity. Trim to your desired consistency, hang to dry in the dark. Should take around 10 days or more. A couple weeks or more if you don't trim sugar leaves beforehand. When the mid size stems snap, I cut the flowers from the branches into clean, new paper grocery bags. I don't put more than 4-6 inches of bud in each bag. Fold the top like a lunch bag. Let sit overnight. This allows the moisture left in the flowers to be evenly distributed. So every flower is the same. Pull out a bud inspect. Smoke a piece. Then I separate into 30 gr. Glass jars. For the first week or two I crack the lids for 15 min a day. Keep in the dark. After that you can leave sealed in jars. I have had strains that lose their smell and it never returns, and strains that stink through every part of the process. So I know personally that some strains will do that. Or if you dry to quickly chlorophyll gets trapped, and dried in. "Flash dry"

I can never get good smoke with 60% humidity in the jar. My sweet spot is56- 58%. If I jar and see 60% I dump it out and air it out. The rules of physics are different in my area. I have 4 Caliber IV's that all read the same and adjust very quickly (love those things). I try different strains all the time and 75% of them are just average no smell weed (with fancy cool names). Only about 10% are the real deal that actually have a nice smell and taste when dried. I feel your pain because I go through it all the time when trying new strains and get disappointed 75% of the time. If you had 3-4 strains in your room you most likely would have one strain that came out awesome. Those would be your keepers. The real deals I have had are ECSD, MOB, Jack Herer, and Mendocino Madness.

I used to use paper shopping bags in the old days between hanging and jarring. I don't know why I went away from it because my weed was awesome back then. They are kinda hard to get nowadays and stores hate to use them. Now I hang at 50-55% humidity and when they feel dry to my hands they go in the jar and hopefully will read 56-58%. I do notice the smell getting better after a week or so of limited random burping when I think of it.

So FirstimeARE aren't you a Blue Dream guy? The Blue Dream I tried (HSO) had good bag appeal but the smell and taste was weak. I figured I may have got a bad pheno but never smoked any good Blue Dream yet.

I was growing it for a while like a year, but it was a clone from a friend who he got from his friend so who knows it's lineage. I got sick of smoking the same strain.

This dark star Kush I grew I really enjoyed before it got too dry. I mean it still smells, but not as bad as it did and definitely isn't sticky anymore. This was the plant I had to dry on a rack cause I had to extract some bud rot so I couldn't hang the plant like I did with the other 3 (they were a different phenotype that finished earlier than the one that grew huge buds, the buds foxtailed a lot on those 3) but I accidentally took down a branch when I chopped the 3 foxtailed plants and that smelled amazing and was super sticky, but I smoked all of that branch already.

The 3 that foxtailed smell good and are sticky still, but not like they did when they read 64% (they are at 60 now).

The rest of the big bud phenotype barely has a smell unless you start breaking it up, but the branch I took with the foxtailed variety fucking stank.

I seem to have the same issue as you FirsttimeARE. My buds will have just went into jars for a few days, and I'll still be letting them sit out for a little bit each day because they feel a hair to moist. And just as you said, they'll go from smelling like heaven to...well, really not smelling whole bunch at all, and happens after only letting the buds sit out for an hour or a bit less. I take it as meaning I should've left it jarred or not have let it set out for as long as I did, but as you said, my hygrometer will still be reading in the 60% range...this very last cure I did, however, I found that by keeping the moisture above 60% but just below 65%, and not dumping the buds from the jars once in that range but rather letting them sit with their lid off for just a few mins instead, I was able to avoid hitting that wall of losing fragrance, and still give the microbes doing the curing fresh oxygen. :)

Keep it jar’d in a cool dark place and monitor (by observing through the jar) for any signs of mold or moisture accumulation. One thing I’ll do is use one jar as the “test jar” and open it occasionally testing by hand for moisture content. As long as I’m happy with the test jar’s progress (meaning not accumulating moisture nor mold growth) I’ll leave all the other jars sealed. After you know you are safe from mold and moisture leave all jars sealed and stored in the cool dark place.
The more time you can leave the jars sealed and left alone the more you will see the smell you had at harvest return to your sealed jars. Ideally this full process of curing will take at least 2 to 3 months.
In my experience freshly cut cannibas always smells strongest. As it drys that smell almost goes away. You’ll still smell it when you break up those newly dried buds but it is nothing like it was when first chopped. But give those same dried buds a few months sealed in jars like I outline above and the smell will return. In fact simply opening a sealed jar of cured bud will fill the room you are in with that alluring and potent smell you are looking to achieve.

Does dog shit smell more or less as it dries?
