Your yield on a HLG550?

watched the video, thanks. going to go thru that journal post over time since its quite dense!

so the key is to get the best umol/J for LED's when determining quality? I'm hoping the high end (1.9, 2) of that 0.5-2.0g/w for led is the samsung diodes?
yes depends how hard you run them, like any LED

heres the HLG 550 we are talking about 1179 PPF/507W = 2.29 umol/J
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1538/8585/files/L101705401.pdf?12227503688760624565

PLC 6.2, 6 cob vero light = 2.01 umol/J
http://www.pacificlightconcepts.com/product/plc-6/

note that the HLG is $1049 and the PLC is $800. 2.29 umol/J seems like a no brainer, right? 14% more efficient!

well the PLC uses 587 input watts to put out 1180 PPF and the HLG uses 507W to put out 1160PPF. so the PLC has a slight edge ( 1.7%) in total output but they both throw light differently. For this thought journey lets pretend 1180 and 1160 are close enough to be equivalent, in other words your plants wont notice 1160 vs 1180, same same.

assuming the extra 80W of input power (which is 80W of extra heat in your room) isnt forcing toy to go buy an AC lets look at the operating cost per fixture over a year at 15 c/kWh at 12 hr/day:

HLG: 0.507*$0.15*12*365 = $333
PLC: 0.587*$0.15*12*365 = $385

so $50 year at a $250 price difference = 5 year payback (reasonable considering you'll prob get 5 or more years out of either light.

chilled gen 2, 2.06 umol/ J (from 400-700 nm like most other reports.. note they also list 2.15 umol/J but thats from 350-750 nm... now those are certainly photoactive areas of the spectrum but you need to know the range in which a light is measured to compare apples to apples)

a bunch of other independent tests at chilled's site of LEDs and HIDs

Samsung diodes (lm561c) range anywhere from around 2.2 umol/j to over 3 umol/j depending how hard you drive them.
at the diode level. higher when run super soft (your cost per watt goes way up), and lower when run hotter. and then knock off 6-10% for a driver and even more if the fixture uses optics

im not the greatest grower on the planet but in 20 years i *never* cracked 1 gpw until i started using LEDs
and I did it my first time in a tent with a 600..lol. Granted I have grown outside allot and indoor a couple of times but it was pretty easy. SOG and SCROG growers doing it pretty comfortably. If you have a 4 x 4 canopy 2 ft thick then theres over a pound with most strains comfortably. I had 3 Northern Lights and a Strawberry Amnesia, which meant a staggered harvest.

I'm enjoying my new LED strips for vegging. Bloody cheap and versatile. I went with the TCI ones cause I'm a tight arse and coming complete with drivers made the decision to dip my toe into the water a little easier.

best episode ever

Hah ill have to watch that episode later on!

My fav was when they pushed the wall into the lounge room so the toaster (??) could reach the wall power plug.

I had Niels heavy mental concept album on tape.. Underrated I recon, if you ever come across it give it a go.

if not sog and scrog, what are the other methods called? is it the ones where they just throw a plant under and let it grow?

awesome, thanks for the info. i guess my 1g/w was more of an HPS figure rather than LED.

how can an LED design (using same, good lights) end up with vastly different yields, I mean a watt is a watt regardless of design right? unless the range is due to nutes and poor growing method/conditions?
Theory says you should be able to do about 1g of dried plant /1 umol/j I know you can get more with proper plant placement/stadium/ silo combos.

My first 600w HID grow I yielded a GPW of dry flower. (scrog). I should of yielded more as I didn't fill the net so 1.5 GPW from a single 600HID is achievable.
You would think the same W in LED should easily give you 1.5 GPW

Its all about filling the canopy.
Why? There is not a 50% increase in efficiency

I don't believe anything horizontal will beat LED in Sea of green configuration with barely rooted plants.

Hey @thumper60 just wanted to let you know this is what i replaced the 3 1k hps fixtures with.
Also @CobKits or anyone else with experience, am i suppose to remove these reflectors on the cob fixture?
Any thoughts would be great I'm about a day away from transplanting into this shed.
Praying i can hold 77-80 degrees.
And also i fucked and bent a few pins on the heat sinks. Should i just straighten?

pretty u got 2 6oo boards right?iam right on the cliff either shut down for the summer or grab 2 600s I be following for sure very interested in what u think

can you explain the placement/stadium/silo ideas briefly? i figure placement may refer to scrog/sog

good point, i keep forgetting about the time. i guess there isnt an ideal measurement then, eh?
growmau5 did a bunch of sided by sides with kWh of flowering time factored in on his youtube channel. cant remember if he counted veg but i think the veg times were the same for both

wow mongo, its been a while, glad to see you are onboard with LEDs! i personally dont use reflectors as they eat up light but im in a tent, you however look to be in a larger area

without reflectors, those cobs (and all the diodes on your boards) will throw most of their light in a 120 degreeish cone (there is no strong cutoff, it just gets less intense the farther you go off axis). reflectors will cut them down to a sharp 90 degree cone with a defined cutoff due to the edge of the reflector

so looking at your pic, maybe keep the reflectors on where they are at the edge of the garden and you dont want to cast light out into the aisles. the ones closer to the boards id just let the light from the cobs shine out over those plants under the boards. depending on the shape of the grow a reconfiguration wouldnt be horrible. the two boards in line down the middle and then 6 cobs with reflectors down the sides of those. but im assuming, and it might only be marginally better if at all.

really the only way to tell is with a lightmeter (even a free lux app for your phone), just to check uniformity. i assume the cobs and boards are all same or similar spectrum (3000-3500k). what kind of cobs are they? how hard are you running the boards?
