ok thanks guys. so im stuck in a dilema here now

i may send my 2x600w viparspecs back this week and buy new lights but which ones for my 5x5ft tent.
im inclined to go for a 1000W HPS and to fuck with the electric bill ( is it really even that cheaper using LEDs )

it's not that much cheaper on a small scale, it might be 2 or 3 dollars difference in your electric bill. when you're talking a commercial installation, you can save a lot, not only in lighting costs, but cooling costs as well.

i have a 4x7 room and run 2 600s , get better coverage than a single 1k, and the 600s are the most efficient of the hid lights, they put out more light per watt than 400s or 1ks

I grew in a 5x5x5 box for years with a 1k .

If i where to do it again i would probably roll with 2 600s unless you got height then id run a gavita 750

why are you using CFL for veg, surely your LEDs will veg ?
now i am confused !

IMO, nothing beats and LED for veg.

Would work okay, but maybe like 20% less yield I would estimate.

I use a fixed 600 watt HPS next to a 1000 watt HPS mounted on a lightmover... The 1000 watt offers slightly better distance at the cost of higher heat and cash. I sometimes grow trees ~7 ft tall (~2 m)... The 1000 watts HPS is perfect for the trees where the 600 watt doesn't make it as far down... One tree would fill my 5 x 5 (`1.5mx1.5m) so you could get away with (*chuckle*) augmenting your LEDs with a 600 watt HPS... I chuckle because 600 watts of LED with a 600 watt HPS will likely produce killer nugs in your 1.5m tent. The 1000 watt HPS will also give you plenty of light but it will probably be more challenging heat-wise. The 1000w HPS needs to be almost twice as far away from the plant so if you have height issue that's another important consideration... I used a only 600 watt HPS in the same size tent for years... slightly under-powered so my flowering times were a little longer but produced awesome nugs. Best of luck!

Another spanner to throw in the works, would be to use a 1000watt like you suggested. But on a mover, and with a dimmer.

I was able to calculate my costs with an electric bill. Running a 315 CMH with all fans and stuff it cost me 35 dollars a month. I would estimate running 630 watts (Which i am doing this run) will cost me 55 a month. The fans remain the same etc. I live in a place with very high hydro costs but it is relatively cheap for a 4 x 4 tent compared to paying. My total run cost about 200-250 bucks with nutes hydro coco all of it.

I think so. IMHO if the ballast fixture has to be in your tent, its gonna get hot. The CMH are expensive to purchase up front too.
You'd be able to get a semi decent 600watt ballast, bulb and cooltube kit for about 2-3 hundred australian. Id definitely go the cool tube route. Batwings would be a pain in the arse in a tent as far as heat goes. I use an XXtra Cooltube.
Then if you have to later on, just fork out for a decent ballast or two. Id also get the largest 2 reflectors you can to fill the space. Besides in a tent, wheres all that light from the large reflctors gonna go? I think you get a much nicer, even spread.

XXXL air cooled reflectors are worth the $$. especially if they have removable glass for winter.

Just be weary with cheaper electronic ballasts though. Ive had them interfere with my am radio, and better if your neighbours dont know.
Id also check your vipar. My vipar did this aswell. You can buy EMI blockers though that clip on to your lead and itll help the problem.
You can go magnetic ballasts to solve the problem. Although they dont come with a dimmer.

Yes it is an old trick to beat the heat is to locate ballast out of doors .

But they can become rfi antennas broadcasting your grow lol (not saying you need to worry)


My gavita is a double ended open hood and the ballast is attached. I use the heat since its cold now .
I would not say it runs hotter then its equivalent hid brethren. As an old air cooled guy i was skeptical .

But my ventilation fan doesnt come on any more then when i ran a regular 1000w digi single ender

I hear ya. You can buy ballasts that have a "no signal" garantee, but they cost a shit tonne.
I bought four $3 clips that i put on my leads, and it totally fixed the problem for me. I do prefer to have mine on the exterior myself.
I would chck the viparspectra as well. My one does it.

in my opinion,ceramic metal halide is an underpowered alternative to hid. not a good bandwidth of light to flower under, not enough penetration to grow large plants, just a kind of useless fad light. maybe two of these overpriced mutants would cover your tent, at 5 times the cost of two hps

I almost treid cmh for my veg room .

After 15 years and trying an led ufo when they first came out god im old now.

I have always known at one point led or some other tech would take over hid .

But when i moved my op from my basment box to an outdoor building i needed a new light as mine was setup with a reflector made for a little box lol.


So i looked into leds but then 2 years ago gavitas where on the scene and i figured with a light desined for high ceiling green houses it should be powerful when used in shorter height.


So im using a gavita 750 to cover 8x8 as an experiment to see what i can do with one light stretching its capabilities

Results are in my journal im 2 weeks into flip.

So far so good
