"Immigrants can be held by U.S. immigration officials indefinitely without receiving bond hearings, even if they have permanent legal status or are seeking asylum, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday."

Holy fuck. Can you see lady liberty crying?

"It's not the responsibility of the courts to interfere with elected officials. Let the voters do our job for us. I have a golf appointment."

I don't think that's what the ruling said. What I understood is that the appeals court ruling imposing a 6-month mandatory bond hearing or the person automatically gets released to his own recognizance or whatever they call it in immigration, was not within the scope of what an appeals court can do. That action imposing a hearing deadline should be left up to the legislative branch of government if the executive agency can't do it itself.

I could be mistaken bc I am not a lawyer, but it's not so much a cheer for indefinite detention than a slap on the wrist to the appeals courts....

I don't like that the guy in this particular case sat in jail for 3 years either over some bullshit charge of drugs and joyriding (I don't even know why that is a crime now). That sucks and should be fixed.

if only Congress had the balls to deal with real issues they could fix this, pass a law that expedites the immigration court system, fully fund and staff with a competent and streamlined process.....but yeah Make America Great Again and all that....

Supreme Court Ruling Means Immigrants Could Continue To Be Detained Indefinitely
https://www.npr.org/2018/02/27/589096901/supreme-court-ruling-means-immigrants-can-continue-to-be-detained-indefinitely

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that immigrants, even those with permanent legal status and asylum seekers, do not have the right to periodic bond hearings.

It's a profound loss for those immigrants appealing what are sometimes indefinite detentions by the government. Many are held for long periods of time — on average, 13 months — after being picked up for things as minor as joyriding. Some are held even longer.

I don't see how this isn't the biggest news story thus far in recent memory. I know it's been a shit show but this just gave ICE gestapo status.

While the Gestapo may be becoming more apparent, what you have identified is only the logical end of a government which BEGAN with a claim of powers which were ALL self granted.

If you care to read why the article in the link below does a good job of illustrating it....hmm that writer seems to use some familiar analogies...

That's funny, because Obama like all politicians is ANTI-TRADE and I'm not for National borders since they are a false imaginary construct.

Care to go a round or two on the anti-trade one or will you be smart enough to lay off before I give you a good schooling, Poopy Pants?
